Game Thread Penn State at tOSU, Nov 19, 3:30 ET, ABC

To All Ohio State Fans, especially those going to the game next Saturday:

Some have observed that, given their reputation, Wisconsin fans will be merciless toward Penn State and their fans on the final Saturday of the regular season. I do not doubt this. The person posting it did not act as if they were going out on a limb. They were simply stating something that we all accept as fact.

No one will be thinking about that this weekend. That game is 2 weeks away. The Buckeyes' own game against the Nits is still 9 days in the future. Our thoughts are on vengeance for our last trip to West Lafayette. That is where our TV sets will be tuned at Noon on Saturday. That is what we care most about, and rightly so.

Later in the day however, our thoughts and our TV sets will turn toward Happy Valley, to the replay of what happened there. What happened there may put the Buckeyes in firm control of their own destiny in the Leaders Division. That may not be what the announcers talk about; but it will be what matters to us, and rightly so.

Whether it is during that telecast or during replays of the riot that occurred last night; our ears will, no doubt, be assaulted with the 2nd most annoying chant in all of college football. When you hear it; I implore you to hear something else. While they lay proud claim to who they are, let it remind you of who we are not. Our cheer this weekend is, "We Are - Not Them!".

No, I am not saying that we are not Penn State. While this is true, and while we can be grateful for it, it is not where our focus should be. The point of all this is, "We Are - NOT WISCONSIN!".

We are not drunken, bottle-throwing fools who delight in other peoples' misfortune and publicly disgrace ourselves. We are not classless simpletons who parade classless banners before television cameras, bringing shame on our university. We are not them, Columbus is not Madison, The Ohio State University is not Wisconsin.

If we were to behave like Wisconsin fans when Penn State rolls into town, the Blue & White clad visitors would leave feeling defensive and self-righteous. If we behave like true Buckeyes and show the visitors cordial hospitality, if we act like we are reasonable enough to realize that they are NOT (for the most part) the same people who rioted last night and that they had nothing to do with the failure to protect the innocence of the innocents; then the visitors will return to Pennsylvania thinking not about how they were treated, but about how their own university has been utterly disgraced, and rightly so.

Let the disney channel say what they will. Let them make all the comparisons they want. Let them disgrace themselves. But do not let them compare our behavior to that of the Happy Valley rioters. I harbor no illusions about Buckeye fans doing anything that would actually be as deplorable as much of what was seen last night. None of us however, harbor any illusions about the mickey mouse club portraying ANY misbehavior on our part as being just as bad if not worse.

If we behave like true Buckeyes, if we cheer our Seniors (ALL of our Seniors) on Senior Day and cheer the team during and after the game, if we leave everything else out of it; then nothing ESPN says will matter. At the end of that game every viewer will be thinking that Ohio State is a better place than Penn State (and Madison). And rightly so.

Trivializing the rape of young boys for humor is pretty sad.

Are you suggesting I did that?

There was not supposed to be anything funny (at all) about my post.

I was dead serious.

Seriously.

EDIT: Just noticed that, for those who view 15 posts per page (default), there are some posts that deserved your post as a response at the bottom of the previous page.

Nevermind.

Believe it or not, tOSU is still alive in the Division race. It all depends on Wisconsin losing at Illinois, and that game will be ending just as the tOSU-PSU game kicks off.

Team......Conf..Div-Wins...........Div-Losses.....Div-Remng..........Cross-Remng
PSU.......5-1...Ind,Purd,Ill.......----...........@tOSU, @Wisc........

Wisc......4-2...Ind,Purd...........tOSU...........@Ill,PS U...........

tOSU......3-3...Ill,Wisc,Ind.......Purd...........PSU......... .......@TSUN
Purd......3-3...Ill,tOSU...........PSU,Wisc.......@Ind........ .......Iowa

If Wisconsin wins at Illinois, the tOSU-PSU game is meaningless as far as the division title, since the winner of the Wiscy-PSU game would go to the CCG no matter who wins PSU-tOSU.

But if Wiscy loses at Illinois, the possibility of a 3-way or 4-way tie exists. All 3-way and 4-way tie possibilities include both Wiscy and Penn State, and tOSU wins all 3-way and 4-way way ties that it gets involved in.

tOSU would win a 3-way tie with PSU and Wiscy, and tOSU would also win a 4-way tie (since tOSU and Wiscy would be 2-1 in games among the 4, and owns the head-to-head over Wiscy), and the group-head-to-head record is used to whittle it down to 2 teams and then the individual head-to-head is applied.

So tOSU is technically still alive in the division - it requires a Wiscy loss at Illinois, AND a Wiscy win over PSU, AND 2 wins for OSU. Purdue's results don't affect tOSU's chances.

GPA. Can this be posted as a separate sticky thread until after next weekend's game?

It's amazing to think that they still can win their division. At this point I find them undeserving, but then again..........most of the Big Ten is at this point. :wink2:

The University should bar any signs that reference the scandal. Confiscate at the gate, and if anyone objects, they lose the privilege of ordering their alumni or student tickets next year.

Frankly, using this tragedy for the purposes of fan trash talk is disgusting, and I think that any decent person would speak up and put a stop to it. Pedo bear signs say a whole lot more about the fan atmosphere here than they do about Penn State, and what they say isn't pleasant.

This game is going to be played under a very unfortunate spotlight for both teams, and it's extremely important that our fans, students and alumni present Ohio State (and the Big Ten) in the best possible way.

Nebraska's conduct last week was exemplary and a credit to the conference, including Pelini's post-game comments. Penn State and their fans, other than those doing the Joe Pa chants, also deserve some credit for not living up to our worst fears about the game. Perhaps the thoughts of more reflective fans and alumni, like Michael Weinreb at Grantland have started to sink in.

While I have no patience for the sorts of delusional apologists you see commenting on media articles, I think we'll be encountering the more sober and realistic portion of their fan base at this week's game. I hope we treat them well. As far as the apologists, I hope that people just make their point firmly that children come above football and leave it at that.

Both schools have had enough bad press this season to last a lifetime and don't need any more. Let's just have a great game in a great atmosphere.

Sticking with the game on the field -- if Penn State doesn't beat us by 20 I'll be shocked. How on earth we expect to be able to run the ball against their D-line is beyond me, and our passing game is utterly inept.
