Pc builds, upgrades, advice

If I add an IP address to my host file, shouldn't I be able to ping that IP? I 10.9.have rebooted and it doesn't seem to help.

Example of added line:

10.2.22.115 companystaging.clientcity.gov

and yes there is a space between the ip and the url

Not necessarily. Ping, as a service, can be blocked by disabling the service itself. So you should try the ping request to the host via both the IP and the hostname. You should also verify you can receive the ping responses on your own box (try 'ping 8.8.8.8', which is an open Google DNS server).

On windows boxes you need to make sure you have enabled File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4) for both inbound and outbound traffic in Windows Firewall.

The hosts file itself is checked before DNS resolution. It maps hostnames to IP addresses and IPs back to hosts. The format generally uses tabstops between the IP/host pair, ending with a line feed. On Windows it is located in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts.

You must edit it with Administrator privileges and it must be saves as 'hosts' (no file extension). If doing it in Notepad make sure you didn't accidentally export it out with the .txt file extension.

See screen cap below. Example Admin Prompt on left. ping Facebook resolves to 173.252.120.68. Editing the hosts file with Notepad and set facebook.com to point to the IP 0.0.0.0 and save. It now fails ping resolution. No reboot or ipconfig /flushdns command is required.

Been eyeing finally building a PC to take the majority of my photo editing tasks off my 6yr old MBP, as well as be able to play a few games (PlanetCoaster, SimCity 4, and RCT, that's quite literally the extent of my PC gaming ). My desire to have the best components I can is getting the best of me when it comes to the CPU and GPU, and I keep waffling back and forth between being reasonable and getting something like a Ryzen 5 2600X and a 1050ti (which really should be plenty of power), or going for a little more power than I probably need with a Ryzen 7 2700(X) and a 1060/1070.

I do like to dabble in other compute-intensive tasks from time to time, and audio software would likely end up being used pretty often not too far down the line, which could definitely use a little more power than my photo editing takes, but I think my reasonable options should still be enough. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also debating if I would want to bother with an AIO water cooler for the CPU, since the stock coolers with the Ryzen chips seem to be well regarded as long as you don't want to do major OCing, which I wouldn't.

I've been running the integrated Corsair hydro coolers since 2011. Never had a problem with 'em.

Chip specs at the top end are a bit overblown, IMHO. M.2 NVMe is where the real exponential performance gains are, and that's what I sunk my money into because I wanted the capacity. Those Samsung 960 weren't cheap when I built my new PC last year. Paid more for my c:\ storage than I did for the CPU cooler and the 7700K combined.

@scarletmike I was thinking about doing the same thing in upgrading my I7 -860 (from 2010) and by the time i priced everything out it wasn’t worth. Combine that with the super inflated prices for Ram and graphics cards right now because of crypto currency mining and apparently a DDR4 shortage if you can hold off 6 months or so you might be able to find some better deals. CPUs will be roughly the same price but RAM and Graphics are grossly overpriced now.

@Dryden not sure if you agree.

Yeah, the ridiculous GPU prices are the only reason I'm even considering the 1050ti instead of just going with a 1060, though they are dropping closer to MSRP it seems. RAM is also ridiculous, but unfortunately unless AMD pushes out DDR5 sooner rather than later and phone sales take a massive dive, I don't expect Samsung and the other producers will do anything to lower the price on that. I'll probably still end up holding out, but damn the itch is growing strong.

@Dryden, I wish I had the budget to spend on NVMe, but standard 2.5" SSDs will have to do. I upgraded my MBP last year with 16GB of RAM and a 500GB Samsung 850, and I can't even consider going back to a HDD for a main drive. I'd be using a 250-500GB SSD for programs and OS, with photos and other files living on a 1TB 7200RPM WD (or possibly a Seagate hybrid drive instead of the WD). I've heard some spotty things about the Corsair AIOs, mainly premature pump failures, but the NZXTs seem to be decently regarded outside of their control software which evidently likes to phone home every piece of personal data it can hoover up from what I've read.

Given that nvidea just re upped it for a 5th revision it’s currently price/performance king

Yes it's the 6GB. One of my linebackers picked up a pair of 1080's and offered it to me for $125 + shipping. Don't think I can say no now.

Edit: this reminds me. I have an I5 3570k Ivy Bridge and Asus P877VB Pro for sale if anyone is interested.

He says about a year old. Which makes sense because this kid became a hardware junky seemingly overnight right around holiday season last year.

I'm told it has been stock voltage and clocks, only thing he did was add some decent artic silver instead of the factory paste.

He sent pics and screenshots, everything appears in rather excellent condition.

Edit. it's the EVGA 1060 GB superclocked gaming.
