2021 PA ATH Derrick Davis Jr. (LSU Verbal)

Ultimately, Davis said he is “trusting my gut” as he decides where he should play his college football.

“If my gut tells me no, then that’s what it is,” Davis said. “That, and if my parents feel like it’s the right environment for me.”

Davis said he is looking for a school that has a “great campus, great coaches, great academics,” and he’s looking for the school that can put him in the best possible position to achieve his goal of playing professionally. He’ll ultimately have to decide whether Ohio State is the school that best fits those criteria, but he did say he talks to Ryan Day and director of player personnel Mark Pantoni regularly and he likes “how there’s always honest” with him.

“They’re going to prepare me mentally and physically for just me being dominant on the field,” Davis said on how Ohio State could help him achieve his goals.

Just sayin': I don't recall anyone referring to Penn State as DBU recently.

If development and preparation for the NFL is as important to Derrick as he says, then it goes without saying OSU holds a major advantage in that department. Coombs and Barnes will mold him into another NFL Draft pick if he puts in the work.

I don’t recall anyone ever calling Penn State DBU.

Seems like just yesterday that I was watching from the south stands as Anthony Morelli was throwing back to back pick 6's to turn a close game into a blowout.

Good times! Malcom Jenkins and Antonio “Yao” Smith, if I remember. Although Jenkins probably dropped the ball before crossing the goal line.

DAVIS DOWN TO THREE SCHOOLS, DECISION TIME SET

Pittsburgh four-star safety Derrick Davis Jr. – the Buckeyes' second-biggest uncommitted target left on defense in the 2021 class – is officially down to three schools, and he has set a decision time of 5 p.m. for his announcement on Saturday, Mike Vukovcan of Pittsburgh Sports Now reported:

Following a weekend visit to LSU, Davis told Pittsburgh Sports Now on Monday that his three finalists are Ohio State, Penn State and LSU, with Pitt and Georgia eliminated.

The four-star safety plans on announcing his final decision this Saturday around 5 p.m. in his hometown of Monroeville.

Penn State has always been viewed as the favorite for Davis because of his relationship with the Nittany Lions coaching staff, especially former Gateway head coach and current PSU assistant head coach and secondary coach Terry Smith.

Davis' trip to Baton Rouge this past weekend – a visit that followed his appearance for Ohio State's Buckeye Bash that had him feeling comfortable and had the commits feeling confident he would wind in Ohio State's class – could factor into his final decision, one that is about as mysterious as any recruit's decision in recent memory.

While at LSU, Davis had the chance to walk around their campus, see where their dorms are located and was able to see their impressive downtown with his family.

In terms of who has the advantage, they all appear to be even but because of how long they’ve been recruiting him, the staffs at Ohio State and Penn State have had the best chance to form relationships with Davis and his family.
