P Nick McLarty (Official Thread)

I like that he just comes out and says that he doesn't run like your average 6'7" football player and can tackle. Kind of strikes me as like a guy who grew up playing point guard and then hit a big growth spurt and moved to forward. The tackling side is going to take more development than he thinks, though, I would think. If a returner gets to him, he'll be our last defender and the guy will be moving full speed. That's going to be different from what he's done, but you can learn technique if you're not afraid of tackling.

RB you were reading my mind. For those REALLY long in the tooth, one might recall that Lou Groza (Buckeye, and Brownies kicker) would take a turn at DL, just to keep sharp (?) or because the rosters were a tad skinnier than they are these days. OK, now I'm more happy that we've got someone who can reverse the field for us. PS, anyone fathom who's the ST coach? Hopefully this kid can dial it back to down it inside the 10....and as a football (American rules) newbie, bet we don't try the fake punt much (unless he's got some wheels). However, the T basketball pass might have a place in the playbook! Final critique, with all the pub the O is getting, we sure as heck shouldn't need those booming punts much or often. Go Bucks!
Groza played left tackle on offense. Was all pro at that position. Browns had a great punter in Horace Gilliam during the 50s.

Line him up as punter. Have the holder be a QB rather than the kick-off artist. Hike the ball to the holder (QB), who stands up. McLarty runs to his left or right, past the line of scrimmage. Circles to the middle, leaps, and catches the high looping pass. First and ten. Easy Peasy

NEW PUNTER NICK MCLARTY “LOVING” OHIO STATE SO FAR, ADJUSTING QUICKLY AFTER MOVE FROM AUSTRALIA

No member of Ohio State’s 2024 freshman class came to Columbus from further away than punter Nick McLarty.

While the rest of the Buckeyes’ newcomers are from all over the United States, McLarty is in his first months living in America after growing up in Melbourne, Australia. Since enrolling at Ohio State this summer, McLarty has had to get used to a 14-hour time difference, meaning his parents have already started a new day when he calls them at night.

That wasn’t an easy adjustment for the new OSU specialist at first, he acknowledged last week. But he says he’s gotten used to it over time.

“The first couple of weeks were not that good,” McLarty said with a laugh at last week’s Special Skills Football Invitational. “But over time, you slowly adjust to it and it's good now.”

“RIGHT NOW, IT'S JUST ENJOY THE PROCESS, TAKE IT DAY BY DAY AND I JUST LOOK FORWARD TO FALL CAMP, REALLY. AND THAT'S WHERE WE CAN SORT OF SHOW OFF AND HAVE A BIT OF FUN.”– NICK MCLARTY ON HIS MINDSET ENTERING OHIO STATE‘S PUNTING COMPETITION

One thing about the Aussie Rules guys is that they know how to run with a ball. That's the game; not as much contact as rugby, but way more running. I went to one training session years ago I and immediately knew it wasn't for me. All that to say that these guys aren't like most of our punters and kickers here. They are athletes who happen to kick.

Nick McLarty will handle punting duties in Ohio State's season opener.
On Thursday, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day named the 6-foot-7, 255-pound freshman from Melbourne, Australia, as the Buckeyes' starter for the Akron game. As Ohio State enters the 2024 season, McLarty will look to beat out Joe McGuire, Hadi Jawad and Buffalo transfer Anthony Venneri for good in the competition.
"Right now, Nick will be the starter," Day said in a brief press conference. "That competition could go into next week, but as we head into the weekend, he is the starter, and the plan is for him to be the first punter to go out in the game against Akron."
Day said McLarty has made a smooth transition to life in Columbus and the Ohio State football program. McLarty has impressed Day and the Buckeyes' coaching staff with his strong leg, as well as smaller intricacies of playing the punter position, such as snap-to-kick quickness and hang time.
