Russell to play football for Ohio State
Staff report

Jake Russell, a 2011 Twinsburg graduate, has decided to play football for The Ohio State University.

Russell originally committed to play soccer at Bowling Green State University, but has decided to decommit himself.

He will join the Buckeyes this fall as a kicker and with preferred walk-on status.
Russell was named All-Ohio in both football and soccer last fall, as he served as the goalkeeper for the Tiger boys soccer team and the placekicker for the Tiger football team.

Russell kicked an overtime field goal to give Twinsburg a 24-21 win over Sylvania Southview in the Division I playoffs.

Was Twinsburg coach Mark Solis concerned last Saturday before Jake Russell kicked a 20-yard field goal in overtime to clinch a 24-21, Division I, Region 2 quarterfinal win over 2008 Division II state champion Sylvania Southview?

"No," Solis said, "because Jake's 44-of-46 in extra points, has kicked 28 touchbacks and five field goals, with his longest being 42 yards."

Twinsburg won the coin flip before overtime, but Solis decided to let his defense take the field.

"We got the stop," said Solis. "When I asked Jake if he was ready to win the game, he said 'Just get [the ball] to the middle of the field and I'll kick it through.' "

We got a steal with this kid! I wouldn't be surprised if he saw the field this year.

Welcome Jake and GO BUCKS!

well, he'll need to work hard to see the field this year considering his range in high school. there's definitely potential down the road, though, after working on technique and kicking only for football for a couple of years.

I don't think you can do two sports in the same season, could be wrong though. I'm interested to see if he can give Basil a run for his money for the starting job.
:osu:

You can but it is difficult because of NCAA required rest time and other obvious schedule issues.
