I'm trying to receive e-mail and it keeps getting stuck on message 6 of 20. I've restarted my computer, manually shut down OE and restarted it, deleted my e-mail account and put it on my computer again and it keeps getting stuck.

Any suggestions?

Hah, wow I deal with that problem everyday. Can you access your email account through a web based mail system? If so, go in there, most likely you have a huge attachments that is plugging it.

Also under OE, Go to the account properties. Under the advanced tab, crank the server timeouts to 5 minutes.

Important Disclaimer: Not a computer expert by any stretch, just trying to help.

Can you get your e-mail without using outlook express? Not sure what kind of e-mail account your outlook express is pulling for you, but you should be able to get your e-mail using alternate means. If so, then you could probably clear out the e-mail that is locking your OE up, and be right back in business.

I was actually able to check my e-mail online through Time Warner's website. I've been told before I could do that but I've never tried. It will come in handy in the future when I'm out of town. I'm happy to report that did solve the problem.

Not exactly sure why it was getting stuck. There were no large or unusual files, just messages from my fellow Backstreet Boys Fan Club members, a couple of Dungeons and Dragons newsletters and a receipt from Ebay for the Penis Enlarger Pump auction I just won.

Well see, it's all because OE is gay. If ANYTHING causes it to timeout while downloading mail, it totally jams the mailbox, and it will never work correctly again unless you go in and delete the messages that it has already recieved, along with the one that it got stuck on.

Every time I close out OE it gives me the following message: "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take a few minutes" and then I have to choose OK or Cancel. Is there any way I can stop that from popping up every time I close OE? Thanks.

Yes. Click OK and let it run. :p

What happens is OE stores each of your email mailboxes as flat files on the disk. What I mean by that is that if you have 100 messages in your Inbox, there is only one Inbox.dbx file on the disk that has all 100 messages in it. For speed concerns, OE does not purge your mailbox files when you delete something. E.g. if you choose to delete your 100 messages in OE, on the back end the system simply copies those messages contained in Inbox.dbx to Deleted Items.dbx. The messages are not actually erased from the back end Inbox file, they're simply flagged as hidden and not displayed to you. This cuts down disk I/O significantly when managing your email at a cost of disk space.

The Compact Files and Folders utility deletes the data in the back end files that you've tagged as deleted in the interface. It may take a VERY long time to run, but you would typically see an enormous speed increase in your email software by doing this periodically, especially if you send/receive a lot of email or handle attached files regularly.

If you deal with huge files it is a necessary maintenance routine, because Windows has a filesize limit of 2Gb, so you will eventually wind up with a 2Gb Inbox.dbx back end file if it has never been compacted, meaning OE will fail to ever download new messages because the Inbox is "full," despite the fact you've deleted everything in the Outlook Express interface.
