Outdoor Grilling (official thread)

Sure beats heating up your house. Still in the triple digits out there?

Yes, it does, which is why I use the grill in the summer - that and different, good flavor. I have a boatload of apple chips that are going to flavor the crust this time, too.

Today is only supposed to be 98 degrees. Tomorrow should hit 100 again, then there's debate whether we're going to have another upper-90s day on Sunday or whether the front will come through and we'll finally get back down to the lower 90s where we belong.

Walked out of my house at 6:30 this morning and it was 78 degrees - and it felt cool. That is ridiculous.

The in-laws (+ niece & nephew) were in town last night, so we made pizzas for everyone.....oven was at 550 for close to an hour. Even with the AC running non-stop, it was still 87 in the kitchen when the last pizza came out.

Reason #1 I put a thermometer on my new grill.

It's 94 here in NH now, I've spent most of the morning outside fixing my boat. I must have gone through a gallon of water today already.

I was all set to grill pizza tonight, but my stupid gas tank ran out of propane.

This is a lesson for everyone - NEVER do the propane exchange. They cheat you on the amount of propane you get. Always seek out a proper propane company that will fill your tanks full. My experience has been that it's much cheaper to go that route, too.

I ended up baking my pizza. My kitchen was 93 degrees when it was done.

Where I live there seem to be pizza price wars going on due to keen competition. At this point pizza is something I would just order out.

Isn't it tough making the dough when it's so hot?

I cheat and use a bread machine. Mine has a pizza dough setting, but I only let it go through the first half of the process - I don't want it rising in the machine, I want to control that process on my work surface.

I worked as a baker part time years ago and bread dough is really tough to work with when it's too hot. You must use a shitload of flour.

I'm going to grill pizza for dinner tonight. I'll likely die in the heat, but it's for a good cause.

Pussies.

And I'm mostly talking to Gator.

@AKAK - Pussies for what? Cooking? You can get a lot of tail by knowing how to cook a good dinner for a woman. :wink2:

@Dub - I was a baker for a while, too. I've worked in the fields, I've helped on a farm, I've moved furniture and I've done repo work, but baking was by far the hardest job I've ever had.

The dough I'm working is a small batch, and while it does get hot in the bread machine, if you take it out immediately after the mixing cycle is done, let rest briefly, then form your crust, it cools down nicely and gives you a good proof.
