Pretending I'm a pleasant person is exhausting.

The wife and I are heading for Philadelphia and then the portland Maine area.
I would appreciate any advice as per inexpensive motel/hotels within an easy drive of the liberty bell. also anything we should see while there.
Then again the same info regarding portland Maine and seeing the ocean.\
Thanks

Have you tried tripadvisor.com? That's what I always use.

It's been awhile, but Old Original Bookbinders was a fun eating experience -- I think it used to sell more lobsters than any other single restaurant in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Original_Bookbinder's

McGillens Ale House in central Philly is the oldest continuously operating bar in the US. http://www.mcgillins.com/

Porstmouth, NH is where to shop for booze before entering Maine and on the way home -- no sales tax in the "Live free or die" state. The wharf area around Portsmouth is interesting. Take a day to drive up to Camden, ME. Beautiful.

If I remember correctly one can only buy booze in one of the state run stores.

Liquor is only sold in NH at state liquor stores. Beer is not sold there, but is sold everywhere else. Wine is sold at both.

When are you going to Maine? Sadly, not much in terms of cheap lodging during tourist season.

Anywhere you hit the beach in Maine is clean and beautiful. Camden is also worth the drive, as cincibuck stated.

Bump for philly lodging info, What's the nearest smaller town that has lodging?

Probably York. Not looking at a map right now, but do you want to see Philly or skirt around it? You can probably find something in the city through Expedia or some such at a savings. It's an interesting city, Independence Hall, the USS Olympia, McGillens. If you don't want to go in, but want to catch some history stop at Valley Forge.

The wife and I are in Chambersburg PA. where we will visit Gettysburg Nat'l Park today before moving on down to DC to watch the Sunset parade at 8th and I sts tonight. That will pretty much fill up today but we are looking for things to see/do on our way up to Atlantic city where we intend to watch sea gulls all day befor driving up to Otswego NY so I can see some mountains. We kind of droped Phily from the schedule.
Any further itmes of interest would be appreciated.

Gettysburg is a pretty cool place and it looks like the weather will be nice today. Take your time there....especially at Devil's Den, Round Top, & Little Round Top. Looking at the map from AC to Otswego the only thing I would say worth stopping at is if you're hungry around the time you go through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.....find the Grotto Pizza near the Wyoming Mall. 2nd best pizza ever (Cassanos in Troy, Ohio being #1).

You're kind of near Hershey today, but honestly aside from the theme park and the spa that place is overrated.

For those who care. or even if you don't, the wife and I are back from our vacation. We went to Gettysburg, and should have planned to spend two days there, especially since the Marines' sunset parade on friday night got washed out but we enjoyed DC anyway ,kinda sorta, maybe.
We then drove clear up thru the mountains on NY to Oswego. I wanted to go there because I like to check out American history from the beginning.
From there we drove back to Ohio on Rt 90 and took some time to drive around looking at the covered bridges of Ashtabula County. It appears that they are one of the features of Ashtabula. One is the longest covered bridge in the US of A. Stayed there overnight and drove home today.
I was really glad the wife let me drive 1700 of the 1880 mile trip.
BTW if anyone deceides to depend on Yahoo map directions your an idiot.
Take the time to buy an atlas and state maps.
Anyway we got back safe and sound and can hardly wait until I get to do my first ban......

Or, be a young geezer like me and join AAA. Those people hand out maps like crazy.

Glad to hear your trip went well, and that you didn't have to endure too much of the Mrs' driving. Did you make it to Maine?

Well we did make it to a couple of Main sts. But that's about it, but no big loss, I mean we didn't make it to Philly either but the liberty bell is still just a big bell with a crack in it.....
