Stabbing suspect caught in Fla.
Updated: June 14, 2013
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Police say a third suspect in the stabbing of Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Mike Adams has been captured in Florida.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard says 26-year-old Jerrell Whitlock of Pittsburgh was arrested Friday morning in Gainesville in central Florida and is being held there.

Whitlock had been wanted on charges of attempted homicide, attempted robbery, aggravated assault and conspiracy for his alleged role in the June 1 attack on Adams. Two other men are already jailed on similar charges.

According to a criminal complaint, the men tried to rob Adams as he left a restaurant around 3 a.m. and tried to steal his vehicle.

Adams had surgery for stab wounds but the 6-foot-7 345-pound lineman expects to recover by training camp in July.

Third suspect in stabbing of Steelers' Mike Adams returns to Pittsburgh in custody
June 29, 2013
By Liz Navratil / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The third suspect in the stabbing of Steelers player Mike Adams and the woman who fled with him to Florida returned to Pittsburgh in custody Friday.

Jerrell Whitlock, 26, of Hazelwood, and Precious Gethers, 25, of Carrick, arrived at Pittsburgh police headquarters on the North Side shortly before 2 p.m.

Both declined comment when Allegheny County sheriff's deputies walked them inside for questioning. They were later taken to the Allegheny County Jail for arraignment.

Mr. Whitlock faces charges of attempted homicide, attempted robbery and other crimes after police said he and two other men worked together in a robbery attempt June 1 that led to Mr. Whitlock stabbing Mr. Adams at 17th and East Carson streets on Pittsburgh's South Side.

Ms. Gethers faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child and hindering apprehension after sheriff's deputies said she lied about being able to reach Mr. Whitlock when they were searching for him and then fled to northeastern Florida with him and the couple's 3-year-old son.

Mr. Whitlock was arrested two weeks ago when authorities found him in northeastern Florida, where some of his relatives live. He had been on the run since the stabbing.

Two other men, Dquay Means, 26, and Michael Paranay, 25, both of Hazelwood, have also been arrested in the case.

Steeler Mike Adams faces alleged South Side attackers in court

PITTSBURGH ?

Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Adams faced his alleged attackers in court Thursday.

Adams was in court to identify the men, including Jerrell Whitlock, who were allegedly involved in the June South Side attack that left Adams hospitalized with two stab wounds to his stomach.

The Steeler testified that he was sucker punched by Dquay Means, and then heard Whitlock, whom Adams identified as the man who stabbed him, say, ?Let me kill him.?

A third attacker, Michael Paranay, was identified after officers found a cellphone he had dropped during the attack, police said.

Channel 11?s Alan Jennings reported that while Adams testified, Paranay snickered and stared at him.

?I wasn't aware of that, but I would imagine he's just frustrated at the testimony that was presented today because it?s not truthful,? said Randall McKinney, Paranay?s attorney.

Following the court appearance, Adams was escorted out the back door of the courthouse to an unmarked police car to avoid cameras and reporters, Jennings said.

Defense: Mike Adams’ version of stabbing changed
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 19, 2013

Some details changed when Steelers tackle Mike Adams testified at a preliminary hearing for the three men charged with stabbing and carjacking him, and defense lawyers were ready to pounce on those inconsistencies.

Adams was stabbed in the abdomen in June in an alleged robbery attempt, suffering a lacerated colon. He told police officers then that he was leaving a restaurant when three men approached, one pulling a gun and demanding the keys to his truck, another punching him and another stabbing him.

According to Liz Navratil of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the version told in court Thursday was slightly different.

Adams said he spent three hours at the Local Bar & Kitchen, had two drinks, and left to walk to a nearby Jimmy John’s for a sandwich. He said he was approached by the three men after he sat in his truck and ate the sandwich, and some other details of the incident were different than the original report, including that one man showed a gun but never raised it higher than his hip.

Defense attorneys asked Adams how much he had to drink, and after several questions, senior district judge Edward Tibbs said: “It doesn’t matter if he was a drunk on the street and stabbed, . . . it doesn’t matter.”

“The story Mr. Adams told today is inaccurate,” said defense lawyer Randall McKinney. “Mr. Adams did instigate.”

The three men arrested — Jerrell Whitlock, Dquay Means and Michael Paranay — will stand trial for attempted homicide, conspiracy to steal a vehicle and other crimes when the case goes to trial.

Steelers' Mike Adams has clearance to practice, Tomlin says
July 26, 2013
Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said during his pre-training camp news conference this afternoon that starting right tackle Mike Adams has full clearance to participate in training camp after being stabbed in the stomach and left forearm in late May.

Tomlin would not answer whether Adams would line up with the starters when the team convenes Saturday for its first practice.

Adams said he planned to practice with his teammates during training camp, but he is going to leave how much up to Tomlin.

"I plan to, but I don't know the timetable," said Adams, the second-year player out of Ohio State. "You have to ask coach about that."

Steelers' Mike Adams ready to go
Updated: July 28, 2013
ESPN.com news services

Seven weeks after being stabbed, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams weighed in at 323 pounds with his core strength returning and he's ready to go, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

If there's one thing we've learned from Mike Adams' 15 months in the NFL, it's not to underestimate his toughness, Jamison Hensley writes. Blog

Adams, who is expected to be the Steelers' starting right tackle this season, was stabbed twice last month in Pittsburgh in an attempted carjacking. He had surgery for wounds to his abdomen and left forearm.

Pittsburgh police said the 23-year-old Adams told officers he was standing near his truck in the city's South Side shortly after 3 a.m. ET on June 1 when he was confronted by three men, one armed with a knife and one armed with a handgun.

Adams told police the trio tried to carjack him, but he didn't have his car keys. He said "the situation escalated" and one man pointed the gun at his face while the other stabbed him twice before all three fled, according to police.

All three suspects have been arrested and charged with attempted homicide, attempted robbery, aggravated assault and conspiracy.

A 2012 second-round pick, Adams started six of the 10 games he played last season. He was the recipient of the Joe Greene Performance Award, given to the outstanding Steelers rookie.

Mike Adams lines up at Left Tackle for third straight practice

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Mike Adams completes third straight day at left tackle
By Kyle Curry on August 4, 2013

Heading into training camp the Pittsburgh Steelers were expected to have some good open competition at mutliple positions. One of those positions was supposed to be at left tackle where Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert would be competing.

However, as camp was opening there was a lot of talk that the position was Gilbert’s to lose. As things stand now it looks like the competition is on.

For the past three days Adams has been playing at left tackle, but Gilbert started camp in that spot. The competition now is to find out what five lineman, and where they line-up, give the Steelers the best possible offensive line for pass protection and the running game.

As for Adams and Gilbert they will be the starting tackles. The only question is as to what side they will be lining up on, but Adams is impressing so far.

“He’s doing a good job there,” said new offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr via SteelCityInsider.com. “We’re just trying to find the right combination. It’s still early. We’re going to try to get the best pass protector over there and these guys are both battling to see who does it. Nothing’s set in stone. We still have four preseason games, a bunch more practice. We’re just trying to find the best combination.”

Steelers notebook: Adams back at natural left tackle position
By Alan Robinson and Mark Kaboly
Published: Monday, August 5, 2013

Mike Adams is naturally left-handed, and with his size (6-foot-7, 325 pounds) and ability would appear to be a natural left tackle. The Steelers apparently believe so, too.

They've flip-flopped Adams and Marcus Gilbert, with Adams now playing left tackle and Gilbert taking over at right tackle in competition with Kelvin Beachum. Adams welcomes the move even if he won't say so publicly.

?I like it,? Adams said. ?That's what I've always played until last year, so take it for what it's worth.?

Adams always played the left side at Ohio State, but with Max Starks already at left tackle, he made his first six NFL starts last season on the right side. Adams said if he's needed to play the right side later, he has no problem with that.

?Whatever happens happens,? he said. ?Wherever they need me to play.?

Asked how the move is going, center Maurkice Pouncey suggested it has been seamless.

?I didn't even realize it until Ramon (Foster) told me,? Pouncey said.

Adams likely to stay right

Mike Adams remained at left tackle and Marcus Gilbert at right tackle for the fourth consecutive practice, and that is more than likely how they will line up against the New York Giants Saturday night at Heinz Field.

Adams played left tackle his entire career at Ohio State. Gilbert started at left tackle as a senior at Florida but started at right tackle as a junior.

"I try to go as hard as I can all the time whether it's left or right, but I like it," Adams said.

Coach Mike Tomlin had talked about flip-flopping them in the spring, but that went by the wayside when Adams was stabbed June 1, with two weeks left in spring practices and minicamp.

Thoughts on Steelers depth chart
August, 7, 2013
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

Here are some thoughts on the "unofficial" depth chart recently released by the Pittsburgh Steelers:

It confirmed that Mike Adams is now the favorite to start at left tackle after many assumed Gilbert would be protecting Ben Roethlisberger's blind side. Adams has been practicing on the left side for nearly a week in training camp, and it makes sense. He played left tackle at Ohio State and Gilbert started on the right side at Florida.

Q. Your young offensive tackles ? Marcus Gilbert at right tackle and Mike Adams at left tackle ? is it going to stay that way?

A. It could end up going the other way. We switched it about a week ago now with positive results. We?ll step into the stadium against the Giants with Adams at left tackle and Gilbert at right tackle, and then we?ll base what happens afterward depending on what happens inside the stadium.

Left tackle Adams feels brunt of Vikings' pass rush
  • Article by: MARK CRAIG , Star Tribune
  • Updated: September 30, 2013
Jared Allen exploited left tackle Mike Adams for 2½ sacks and was in the mix for the Vikings’ final takedown of Ben Roethlisberger.

LONDON – If purple wasn’t Steelers left tackle Mike Adams’ least favorite color before Sunday, it sure is now.

Adams, one of the lowest-rated left tackles in the league, according to ProFootballFocus.com, gave up 3½ of the Vikings’ season-high five sacks and also was part of the left-side protection breakdown that led to the strip-sack turnover in the red zone that sealed the Vikings’ 34-27 victory in the closing seconds Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Jared Allen, who had 2½ sacks across from Adams, said he felt as though the Vikings had Adams off balance the entire game.

“It was one of those games where you want to keep rushing, keep rushing,” Allen said. “I felt across the board, our rush today was pretty nasty.”

Mike Adams slips to third on depth chart
October, 8, 2013
By Scott Brown | ESPN.com

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers’ shakeup at left tackle is official.

i

Adams Mike Adams, who started the first four games there, has been dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Kelvin Beachum and Levi Brown.

The Steelers traded for Brown, who started 79 of 81 career games for the Arizona Cardinals, last Thursday. But quarterback Ben Roethlisberger indicated that Beachum will be given the first crack at left tackle.

“There comes a time when if you’re not playing up to par, Coach [Mike Tomlin] has got to make a decision and I feel like he’s doing that with Mike,” Roethlisberger told 93.7 The Fan during his weekly radio show. “And he’s saying, ‘You know what? Beach has done a great job of filling in at center, at guard at tackle.’ He’s going to give him a shot.”

Roethlisberger said he still has high hopes for Adams, the Steelers’ second-round draft pick in 2012.

“If you’re Mike Adams you’ve got to take the approach of, ‘Wow, I’m not third on the depth chart. I need to probably pick it up a little bit,’" Roethlisberger said. "Maybe this is exactly what he needs to get to that next level. I know he can be that guy and I’ve got confidence that he can be.”

Roethlisberger said he doesn’t link Adams' struggles with any lingering effects from a June stabbing that was a result of an attempted carjacking.
