The Steelers suffered multiple injuries on the offensive line last Thursday in Nashville and while the status of Pro-Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey is still up in the air, we do know that rookie Mike Adams will be playing in place of starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert. It will be the first career start for Adams, so let us give you a little more insight on the rookie before Sunday?s game.

Who is Mike Adams?

Born in Farrell, PA and raised in Dublin, OH, Adams was an all-state lineman his junior and senior year in high school at Dublin Coffman High School. He committed to play his college ball at Ohio State during his junior year in high school. Adams could have gone to pretty much any school in the country, but chose to stay in state and play for the Buckeyes. According to Rivals.com, Adams was the top offensive tackle in the 2008 recruiting class and ranked 3rd overall behind only Jeannette star Terrelle Pryor, who also went to Ohio State and DaQuan Bowers a defensive end from South Carolina that played college ball at Clemson before being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past April. Adams saw the field in is first year in Columbus, playing in 5 games as a true freshman in 2008. He ended his career with the Buckeyes starting in his final 23 games for Ohio State.

How did he become a Steeler?

Steelers rookie offensive tackle Mike Adams quickly finding footing on patchwork line

Published October 18, 2012

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH ? Mike Adams was standing on the sideline, minding his own business when his NFL career got a kick-start.

A minute after Pittsburgh Steelers starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert went down with a hyperextended right knee early in the season opener against the Broncos, Adams found himself lining up across the line from Denver's all-everything linebacker, Von Miller.

Gulp.

"I didn't expect it, but you've got to be ready to play whenever," Adams said. "It was a pretty cool experience."

One that included some very public growing pains as Adams and the rest of the offensive line were roughed up late in a 31-19 loss. The film session was long and painful, with offensive line coach Sean Kugler giving the second-round draft pick out of Ohio State some very pointed criticism.

The talk was a watershed moment for a player not known as a workaholic during his time with the Buckeyes. Adams responded with a tenacity that proved to the guys lining up next to him he was serious about this whole NFL deal.

Good thing considering Adams will make his first start Sunday when Pittsburgh (2-3) travels to Cincinnati (3-3). Gilbert is out indefinitely with an ankle injury.

"Mike's day-to-day stuff has changed a whole lot," Pittsburgh guard Ramon Foster said. "He's more in tune to what's going on. Not to sound bad, but him getting embarrassed like (in Denver) kind of woke him up a little bit. He got chewed out pretty good and he's come back pretty strong from it."

Steelers? Adams thrust into role, replacing injured Gilbert Sunday
BY F. DALE LOLLEY Staff writer [email protected]

PITTSBURGH ? When the Steelers selected offensive linemen David DeCastro and Mike Adams with their first two picks in this year?s draft, most figured it would only be a matter of time before the two would be starting.

But preseason injuries derailed both DeCastro and Adams, forcing DeCastro to injured reserve and Adams to the bench in the early portion of this season.

That will end Sunday when Adams makes his first career start, replacing injured right tackle Marcus Gilbert when the Steelers (2-3) play the Bengals (3-3) at Paul Brown Stadium in a crucial AFC North game.

?I think he?s done a great job of stepping up and filling in,? said Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is OK after rolling his ankle in practice Thursday. ?He?s improved every day and every week in practice. He?s a guy that I know wants to get better and prove himself. It will be a good challenge for him this week.?

To say the least.

The Bengals lead the AFC in sacks with 20 and likely will throw all they can at the rookie right tackle in an effort to rattle him.

Luckily for the Steelers, the 6-7, 323-pound Adams won?t be seeing his first game action. He has stepped in for Gilbert ? who is out several weeks with a torn tendon in his ankle ? multiple times already this season, including in the opener at Denver.

That was a rough start as Adams ? who missed most of the preseason with a sprained knee ? allowed a pair of sacks late in the game to Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller.

It might have been a wakeup call for a player whose work ethic and attention to detail had been knocked in college at Ohio State.

?Him getting embarrassed like (in Denver) kind of woke him up a little bit,? said Steelers guard Ramon Foster. ?He got chewed out pretty good, and he?s come back pretty strong from it.?

Steelers lineman Adams braces for debut as starter
October 20, 2012
By Dan Gigler / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Ask a couple of Steelers right tackle alumni -- Max Starks and Willie Colon -- about their first start at that position. It's seared into their memories.

"Tennessee, 2005. Home opener against Kyle Vanden Bosch when he had red contacts in his eyes -- I'd never seen a grown man with red contacts in his eyes," Starks said of the intimidating and ghoulish appearance of Vanden Bosch, a Pro Bowl sack specialist.

Colon's memory is as vivid. "Baltimore on Christmas Eve [2006] -- that was a lot for me ... Their defense was ranked pretty high. Ray Lewis was up for another MVP year. It was a dogfight all the way through."

Someday, Mike Adams will have similar recollections about Sunday night in Cincinnati -- when this rookie second-round pick from Ohio State makes his first regular-season start in place of injured right tackle Marcus Gilbert. But he already has endured a series of trials before and in his brief tenure with the Steelers, some on the field, others off it -- and of his own creation.

STEELERS RT MIKE ADAMS vs.
BENGALS DE CARLOS DUNLAP

Matchup: With right tackle Marcus Gilbert out with of an ankle injury, rookie Mike Adams will make his first career start. He will have quite a test lining up against third-year defensive end Carlos Dunlap. The matchup doesn?t favor the Steelers. Dunlap is a top-tier pass rusher, and Adams has struggled in his limited action with fast rushers. Look for the Bengals to come after Adams with a lot of speed.

Adams: The Steelers are high on the rookie right tackle, a second-round pick out of Ohio State. Adams filled in significantly for Gilbert against Denver and Tennessee, playing 105 of a possible 145 snaps. Adams also saw a handful of snaps against the Jets and Eagles. Adams has shown he can run block but has struggled in pass protection. Adams (6-foot-7, 323 pounds) has allowed two sacks, two hurries and another quarterback hit.

Dunlap: The defensive end missed the first two games of the season because of a knee injury but has made up for lost time despite splitting time with Robert Geathers. Dunlap has one sack, six quarterback hits and seven hurries in four games. Dunlap missed both meetings against the Steelers last year and was held sackless during his rookie season of 2010.

Adams turns in quality start for Steelers
Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Unlike most Steelers fans I enjoy listening to Cris Collinsworth broadcast a game. I think he?s one of the better analysts out there, but he did get one wrong Sunday night.

In reviewing a block by Steelers rookie right tackle Mike Adams, Collinsworth, the NBC game analyst said, ?That was one of the first times tonight that Adams did not get help.?

Collinsworth said it a couple of times, but, really, Adams received very little help from tight ends and running backs during his first career start for the Steelers.

On my crude tally sheet during a tape review ? which is entirely unofficial ? I had Adams pass-blocking on 21 dropbacks by Ben Roethlisberger.

Of those 21, I had Adams getting help from tight ends Heath Miller or David Paulson only 3 times. And even though Roethlisberger had running backs at the ready a handful of times, none of them needed to step up and help Adams with a chip of his man.

I?m a tough grader, and of the 21 dropbacks I had Adams allowing pressure 6 times. He officially allowed only a half sack to Robert Geathers, but that sack resulted in a forced fumble and a Bengals touchdown.

It was a bad play, and 6 pressures out of 21 isn?t going to force the coaches to keep him on the field, but it really wasn?t a bad debut for Adams against the likes of Geathers and primarily Carolos Dunlap. Late in the game Adams even had to pass-block Geno Atkins one-on-one and he got the job done.

Just as in college and in this past preseason, the second-rounder from Ohio State showed that he has the necessary size, length and foot speed to play tackle in the NFL, but he still needs to increase his strength.

In the run game, Adams was beaten for a loss early by Vontaze Burfict, but that was Adams? only obvious run-game miscue. He obliterated middle linebacker Rey Maualuga on Chris Rainey?s game-winning 11-yard touchdown run and also made the key block on a 15-yard gain late in the game by Jonathan Dwyer.

The other clear positive of Adams? game is his ability to get out in front of screen and reverses. He did that three times, and with the best mobility of any Steelers tackle since Marvel Smith that number?s bound to increase for coordinator Todd Haley.

Was it a Rookie of the Year performance? No, not quite, but it was a quality start for Adams.

Long, solid line forms for Steelers at tackle
October 24, 2012
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers discovered something besides a road victory Sunday night in Cincinnati: An offensive line that looks as if it can shake off the shaky reputation of its past and perform at a level not seen from them in several years.

The line might have had its best game against a good Cincinnati front, and it did so with two of the five positions filled by backups. One of those second-teamers, though, might soon become a regular starter.

Rookie Mike Adams made his first NFL start because of an injury to right tackle Marcus Gilbert and did well enough to have Mike Tomlin singing his praises again Tuesday.

"We're optimistic about his talent level and what he's capable of being. He didn't do anything to hurt that assessment. I think he's continuing to be a guy on the rise. I think his performance was a solid one. I thought he was good in the run game. I thought he was good on the second level, some combination blocks, and I thought he represented himself well in pass pro[tection]. It's a nice next step for him."

This comes from a coach who through the years would hold back praise for rookies and point out that they were, well, rookies, especially after one like Adams has taken so few snaps.

Adams has done well in the past seven quarters playing for the injured Gilbert, and that sets up a possible long-term competition between their past two second-round draft choices.

Tackle Adams out to prove himself ... again

Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams plays against Cincinnati at Paul Brown Stadium Stadium Oct. 21, 2012. Chaz Palla | Tribune Review

Mike Adams, a soft-spoken rookie offensive tackle, is rather guarded and rarely exposes his emotions. But even his usually stoic persona couldn?t hide his excitement about having an opportunity to prove he can cut it in the NFL.

The Steelers? second-round draft pick often had been criticized for his apparent stretches of inconsistency, if not complacency, during the preseason. There were suggestions that perhaps he wasn?t nearly as good as advertised.

Yet the 6-foot-7, 323-pounder enters Sunday?s game against the Washington Redskins at Heinz Field with renewed vigor, in part because his confidence soared after a solid performance in a 24-17 win at Cincinnati last weekend.

Adams, who stepped in for injured right tackle Marcus Gilbert, helped rejuvenate a troubled run game that amassed a season-high 167 yards against the Bengals ? including a 122-yard effort by Jonathan Dwyer.

?I?m sure there were high expectations, but I have high expectations for myself,? said Adams, who started 25 of 30 games at Ohio State. ?So to be able to get in and get a chance to play is certainly a blessing. I give a lot of credit to the guys working with me and helping me develop.

?I?ve been preparing every week as if I?m going to be playing. I don?t know what?s going to happen, but I?m prepared. I tried to be ready when they call my name.?

Q&A: Mike Adams
Posted: Saturday, November 17, 2012
By Mike Bires [email protected]

After testing positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine, Mike Adams promised any team that might draft him that he would clean up his act. In particular, he approached the Steelers and vowed that he would never be a problem if they picked him up. The Steelers did take Adams, a mammoth tackle who?s 6-foo-7 and 323 pounds, in the second round.

And so far, there have been no regrets. The former Ohio State star has been a model citizen. And since replacing injured Marcus Gilbert at right tackle last month, Adams looks like he has star potential.

Times pro football reporter Mike Adams spoke to Adams about his rookie season as well as other topics. Following are excerpts of the interview:

Q: As a native of Farrell, Pa., would I be correct in assuming that you were a Steelers fan as a kid?

A. ?When I was 4, my entire bedroom was all Pittsburgh Steelers? stuff. I?ve been in love with this organization since I started watching football. The first jersey I wore said ?Steelers? across the front at Farrell Elementary School when I was 6 years old. So saying that it?s a dream come true is an understatement.?

Q: Your immediate family moved to Dublin, Ohio, when you were 12. Do you still have many tiees to Farrell?

A. ?Oh, yeah. Most of my relatives live in Farrell. I still get back there a lot. I even have an aunt -- Lora Adams-King - who?s the superintendent of Farrell schools.?

Q: As a high school senior, you were the No. 1 offensive line prospect in the country according to Rivals.com. Who else did you seriously consider before choosing Ohio State and why Ohio State?

A: ?I had the choice of either staying close to home or going down south to either LSU or Florida. There are a lot of reasons why I chose Ohio State. One of the things that weighed heavily in my decision was the pedigree of offensive linemen the team has produced over the years. Guys like John Hicks, Orlando Pace, Korey Stringer and Nick Mangold.?

Mike Adams was awarded the PFWA's "Joe Greene Great Performance Award" for his performances as a rookie in 2012. This award is presented to an outstanding rookie each season.
While the Steelers surely would have liked Adams to get at least an entire season under his belt before asking him to replace Starks, the fact that he will start at all is quite the accomplishment for a young man who was almost passed over in the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers for "character issues", let alone to be their rookie of the year. Adams approached the Steelers prior to the draft and made certain promises regarding the issues in question and his work ethic moving forward.

Apparently, the Steelers and the local Pittsburgh media feel Mike Adams is making good on those promises.
