OT Mike Adams (Official Thread)

Definitely not what you would call a "fatbody" playing left tackle. I think Mike will do just fine next year but starting, no.

*Disclaimer: Alex Boone is not leaving early so Mike will be backing him up next season.

That would be great and the best scenario. We need Boone back next year and that would get Adams ready to go learning under Boone.

Coffman offensive tackle works to improve his skills despite already being a standout

The Columbus Dispatch

Just the sight of 6-foot-8, 305-pound offensive tackle Mike Adams breaking the huddle is enough for opponents to know that Dublin Coffman is going to do whatever it wants on the left side of the line.

The man mountain can pancake, bowl over and generally smother defenders on the other side, too. He's that quick with a 5.1-second 40-yard dash time.

Shamrocks offensive line coach Tom Turner says the football world hasn't seen anything yet.

"Wait until he gets to college," Turner said. "Mike's upside is so high. Right now, he's playing against a lot of 5-foot-9 and 6-foot guys, and that's negative leverage for Mike. He's really at a disadvantage there. They can get underneath him. Wait until he plays against players his own size."

Ohio State, which received a commitment from Adams before the season, is the team that will have to wait.

Adams hasn't taken his size for granted. Turner calls him "a hoss in the weight room." He has worked with former Ohio State and Buffalo Bills receiver Reggie Germany on quickness.

"I realized a while ago that speed and quickness are important because the game is changing a lot," Adams said. "It's a lot about speed now. Defensive linemen aren't big anymore. They rely on quickness, and I have to be ready for that."

Mike played a superb game in Dublin Coffman's loss to St X in the Ohio state semifinal. Too bad the Shamrocks didn't just kick the FG with 10 seconds left to put the game into OT. Still an outstanding season for Coffman.

With Barton done and Boone a possibility Big Mike will have a chance to come in and at the very least give needed depth. I've seen a couple of Coffmans games and Mike seems impressive. He has good feet and good size and seems to have had good coaching. I think I saw that he as well as Stoney, Sabino, Brewster and Shugarts are coming in early (anyone else) This is great as all of these guys, specially the big guys, have some openings to make an early impact.

His frame is so huge that he can bulk up to 340+ under our Strength and speed program without losing any quickness...what an absolute monster he could become.

I watched some of the St. X game last night (between commercials and such from the Kansas v. Mizzu game) and Big ol #75 was just outstanding. Whoever was lined up over him was basically never to be seen again.. every play.

I was pretty impressed.

Did Scruggs go up against him much? I was kind of hoping to see that match-up.

Adams Vs St X -- Better Update

Dont know when Oregon Buckeye was watching the game, but I was there and the end he lined up against -- #39 Muldoon, who made all SW District Defense team this year as a Jr and started for St X as a Soph -- according to St X stats on its webpage had 1.5 sacks, 1 QB hurry, 4 tackles. Also Cinti Enquirer today has two separate pictures of him, one hitting the QB to force an interception and one knocking him down to force a fumble. So Adams is and will be good, but ...

(Since this convo will likely be split off anyway) One of those sacks came on this play. Stoudt held the ball too long on too many occasions as well.

There's a reason that Adams isn't ranked highly by Rivals, you know. I think he gave up two sacks yesterday, one to the DE and one to the LB on a blitz. He has considerable potential due to his combo of incredible size and relatively good speed. However, he lacks explosion, not to mention the killer instinct. Browning would start over him next year.

.....and the same could be said about the inverse. There is a reason he is so highly regarded by Scout.
