The key to winning is to build a set of unique competencies and properly exploit them.

Every coach in the country is going for the spread. They're stocking their offenses to run it. They're stocking their defenses with folks who can defend it.

Is the time right for a team right that can run it right up the middle and wear folks down, with the capabilities to take it vertical or horizontal to mix in the big play?

2008 schedule much tougher

By Brian Kollars | Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 03:11 PM
If THE OSU makes it to next year?s BCS title game, the Buckeyes won?t be accused of taking the easy road. In addition to eight Big Ten games (and the Big Ten HAS to be better next season, right?), here?s who the Buckeyes play in nonconference tilts:
Youngstown State. Ohio University. Southern California. Troy.
OK, so Youngstown State is a gimme and Ohio University could only beat the Buckeyes if the two schools squared off in a keg-emptying contest. But those other two games ?
Southern Cal speaks for itself. If OSU goes to Los Angeles in September and knocks off the Trojans, that would give the Bucks an inside track on a trip to Miami in January 2009. No doubt Ohio State will be an underdog, but will nearly the entire defense returning and a season of starting under Todd Boeckman?s belt, who knows?

lose gholston. lose barton. rest of team more experienced. offense back. defense back. special teams back. nfl linebacker and nfl corner. beanie wells. an experienced quarterback. gonna be great year. and michigan has a quitter coach and no quarterback and comes to da shoe. can't wait :oh:

I'm not sure that's a good thing.:io:

considering what is coming back I go with 12-1. I look for them to lose to USC but hope they don't. I am not sure they make it back to the NCG with a 12-1 record either. I think pollsters will be reluctant to send us back unless we are undeafeated.

At the end of 2006 I figured 2007 was a developing year with all the new starters (and basically only three seniors (Johnson, Barton, & Grant) starting); and 2008 would be the run for the national championship. I still do.

Interesting: the game at USC this fall will have similiar implications to the 2002 Texas game; loser will "probably" be out of the BCS picture. Ohio State should prevail. We have Michigan and Penn State at home.

I predict 13-0 with Ohio State winning all the marbles in the Orange Bowl on 8 Jan 09.

:oh: :io:

you want me to list the many possible scenarios that could result in OSU playing USC twice in one year in the Rose Bowl?

Let's start with the Big 12 and SEC champions being ranked 1 - 2... Lets do a for instance... Georgia and Okie are undefeated as is OSU. Very strong possibility that OSU get's sent to Pasedena. I mean, what were the odds that OSU and LSU would in up in the BCS following week 11 of the past season?

If ifs and buts were hos and sluts we'd all have AIDS.....

And there's no way there will be more than 2 12-0 teams after the regular season for the same reason there weren't any this year.....

Can we say MAC South?
Can we say 8-4 with a win over a BCS conference team (and bowl winner in Oklahoma State) as well as a lot closer than it appears loss to Florida AND a 10 point loss to Sugar Bowl winner UGA???

Baylor, Vandy, NC, Wake Forest, Wazzoo, Utah, BYU, Wyoming, Ga. Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Pitt, Kentucky, NC State, Ole Miss, Oregon or Oregon State... but no, we get Troy. I look at the $60 on the ticket and I go "Why am I paying $60 for a scrimmage?" It's the same thing so many on here bitch about when Tennessee loads up with Swannee and SWNELouisianna Tech and Murfeesboro.
Do you think it could be because most of those teams don't want the automatic loss by coming to Ohio State??? Nah it's NCAA Football 2008 by EA, I can schedule Texas, USC and LSU woohoo!!! :shake:

Hell we don't need to get younger players some playing time at all, they'll develop on their own :roll2:

BTW Troy would probably beat Wazzo, UNC, Vandy, Ole Miss and Oregon State along with Baylor and likely Wyoming (Talk about MAC West :roll2: ) and Pitt......

And if you don't want the ticket, give it up to someone who wants it.....

Nail me on the cross for suggesting they might be undefeated... all they have to do is have a record even/comparable to OSU's to get the nod.

As for Troy:

Wow, and you don't think MAC teams do the same thing each year? Ball State did what to whom?

You may be right, but I suspect that it has more to do with OSU wanting the "for sure" W. Give Troy a few more years and some wins over good competition and I might think differently, but right now you might as well schedule another MAC team and at least keep the money in the region.

Hell we don't need to get younger players some playing time at all, they'll develop on their own :roll2:
Oh, so you do believe in charging for scrimmage games and NFL pre-season. There's the second half of Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota... there are special teams. Tressel has always found a way to work his younger players into the game mix. He's not Charlie Weiss.

BTW Troy would probably beat Wazzo, UNC, Vandy, Ole Miss and Oregon State along with Baylor and likely Wyoming (Talk about MAC West :roll2: ) and Pitt......
And people still won't know who they are and where the hell they came from.

And if you don't want the ticket, give it up to someone who wants it.....
Good, I know who to call when I get stuck with Troy for my alumni ticket.

Two scenarios...

Optimistic Prediction
11-2. Lose to USC. Lose to Big Ten team down the streach (Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State). Win the Rose Bowl.

Pessimistic Prediction
11-2. Lose a close one to USC. Go undefeated through a (once again) fairly weak Big 10 stretch. Lose in the NCS game once again to (USC, Georgia, LSU, or Florida).

Bottom line is...if Boeckman cannot improve on his play in big game situations, and if our defense can't find a way to stop a spread offense run by talanted athletes, then the 2008 team will be no better than the 2007 team.

It's a good thing that you aren't on the team ,we probably would lose 5 or 6. Just why would you not expect some improvement in the team.

Looks like we will get plenty of opportunities to learn how to stop the spread and it's variants...............
Penn State going back to spread it ran in 2005.

Next season might bring a different look to the Penn State offense. Coaches have said the Nittany Lions will go back to more of the spread-style attack used in 2005, when run-pass threat Michael Robinson started at quarterback.
The 2008 squad will be led by a new quarterback because of the departure of two-year starter Anthony Morelli, who was more of a drop-back passer. The major question is whether holdovers Daryll Clark and Pat Devlin can handle the job.
Coaches have said the race is wide open, though Clark may come into spring practice as the first-stringer simply because he was the top backup. Clark showed a glimpse of his potential when he ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on five carries against Texas A&M in the bowl game, though he did not attempt a pass.
