For all the flak he's taken during the past few years for very minor yet painfully accurate comments at times about our offense and such... those whiners will now come on the 10th worshipping him with "We Love Herbie" signs.

Kirk is a straight shooter, and now that OSU finally is deserving of preseason hype he's giving it to us. Combine that with his comments about Michigan, his distaste for Ginn not being the offensive MVP, and other comments and the Herbie haters are running out of ammo quickly.

I'd love the guy either way. All I want from a sportscaster is for his picks to have an intelligent reason, and for him to be fairly unbiased (every sporstcaster is going to be biased a little bit).

Completely true. In front of the mic, he certainly calls it as he sees it, and even when he bashes the Bucks, he is usually right or at least makes some good points. Of course, I have no doubts that he is a homer behind the scenes though :), he does a great job putting that behind him and thinking critically

That's the second time in 2 days that an EsPIN fellow has given tOSU the nod to do battle with USC in the Rose Bowl.

yesterday it was Mike Gottfried for what that is worth.

What strange bedfellows sports reporting doth make.

(friend-of-a-friend-of-my-brother-in-law-talk)

I played golf today with Cincinnati Moeller's golf coach, Rick Bohne. Rick was in Columbus recently and talking to his Upper Arlington counterpart who told him that the UT game hype is out of sight. (the Cincinnati Enquirer is busy covering the Red's farm system, so nothing about college football is printed down here) The UA coach is a huge Buckeye fan and said, "I fear for what will happen if they loose the Texas game. It's gotten so big up here that the season seems to hinge on the second game of the season. [*A single ticket was up for auction on e-bay this AM and was up to $717 by 9:30] If they loose they could go into a long tailspin."
My own fear remains that the team will be unable to concentrate on their opener against a very solid and always well coached Miami U. team. I feel good about Texas, Iowa, Penn State, even playing at Ann Arbor... but that opener has me jittery.

and then there's Louisville, the new BYU. When Louisville plays an SEC/Big Ten/Big 12 schedule then they can be considered for the NC. Till then, get that shit out of here.

it remains to be seen how well coached they will be this year as terry h. now is a head coach at indiana. im not counting them out im just saying that they do have a new head coach.

as for the louisville comment,

damn straight

Louisville - remember how last year some people thought WVU had the inside track to the undefeated season? Besides, I think the respect for the Big Least is not high. That'll be taken in to consideration when those last weeks of voting are taking place (Think Texas over Cal)

I think Louisville is a pretty good program, and their game against Miami was proof of that...too bad they don't play a real DI schedule.

As for LSU, I find it tough to believe that a program with a new coach will go undefeated in the SEC...that league seems like there are just enough good teams to beat each other at least once, but no one head-and-shoulders to run the table.

Our destiny is in our own hands.

This is not a post about Herbstreit or his motivations, but rather about all of the ESPiN forecasts about Ohio State and USC playing for the national championship.

I am not at all surprised by ESPiN forecasts for Ohio State greatness this year. I think we can expect them to really build us up over the coming weeks.
    1. They really angered Buckeye fans. It never ceases to amaze me how statements like this make many people forget ESPiN's disgusting behavior in recent years.
    2. They don't want the GameDay visit to embarrass ESPiN. The last thing they want is a lot of fans pointing out their behavior in recent years while they are on air.
    3. Our football team is good and the basketball team looks like its gonna be getting lots of love as well.
So, what you have to ask is, "Are they motivated by a desire to predict the national championship teams or by their financial interest in telecasting Buckeye games?" "Which of these motivated their handling of the report on Gene Smith's management of the problems at ASU or Troy Smith's recent incident as compared to what they would have done six months ago?"

Again, this is not a comment on Herbstreit. However, in my opinion, ESPiN appears to be behaving in a manner that is directed at improving the ESPiN bottom line. On the basis of realpolitik, that is benefitting us right now but I don't think we should be lulled into thinking ESPiN have become Ohio State supporters.

Acting to support the bottom line is laudable in an entertainment industry, I'll let others draw their own conclusions about how laudable that is in an organization that claims to deliver news.

Geez ! Yeah the big shots at ESPN told all of the on - air guys to pick OSU to play in the NC game for ratings.......:2004:
This coming from a sheep who roots for the most popular team in the nation - that's why NBC is bowing to the flock, bozo.

If they wanted ratings, they'd be pushing ND for the millions of drones just like you. Then again, pushing ND for the NC these days is so laughable even ESPN won't do it.
