We've been to the Fiesta 2 of the last 3 years so there's no way they would take us before ND. They want some fresh meat if they can't get a good matchup. Since they are stuck with the Big East chump they will want the team that will bring the largest number of fans to Tempe. This year that team would be ND. Honestly, would any of you want to travel to Tempe to see OSU play WVU?
Don't be so quick to think that the Fiesta Bowl commitee wouldn't want tOSU back in Tempe. I lived in Phoenix up until last year and the Fiesta Bowl loves Ohio State and their fans. They bring a great atmosphere and tons of money with them.:osu:

I'm not saying we don't bring a lot of money to AZ, but this year I think they would go with ND if they are stuck with WVU. In 03 we packed the stadium for the NC game. In 04 we were closer to 50/50 with the K St fans IIRC. Some OSU fans might be bored of AZ since we've been there so often. Junker would probably nut himself if he could get the ND/OSU matchup.
I don't think it's a given that we go to a BCS game if we win out. If Georgia and us both win this week they will jump us in the BCS IMO. To be assured of a BCS spot I think we need to move up to 6 or 7 in the BCS. We really need Georgia and LSU to lose this week. If OSU and ND get the at large spots VT is going to be pissed as hell.

I like the hypotheticals as much as the next guy... but honestly I thought I watched OSU's chances of a BCS bid fly out the window with VT's loss to Cryami.

ND is the darling of the CFB world. I'm shocked that they don't get an at-large EVERY year they're bowl eligible. With the way they played USC, pencil them and their defensive juggernaut into an at-large.

VT isn't even going to their confrence championship game... and their only loss was to a now #3 Miami squad. Is VT less attractive than OSU? And what if Florida St. beats Miami again in the ACC championship? We've got TWO Big East teams to contend with for the last BCS spot. I'm surprised no one even thinks VT can get that last at-large?

Also, there's a chance that Joe Pa loses in 2 weeks to MSU... and then we control our own destiny.

Whoa, I'm rambling. There's just so much left to happen in the last month of the season... I just hope we can take care of NU this weekend, then go up to the outhouse and smack Llloyd in the mouth.

NDC: "Sloop- Sounds reasonable but man would that suck....."

Its the only way this thing can shake out. I'll put this out there for you guys & you tell me how you'd fill this out. Here are the available teams (assuming that everything plays out as expected):

At-Large ND, At-Large OSU, Big Ten Champ PSU, and Big East Champ WVU to fill out the remaining four spots. Now, the selection order goes like this:

1. Fiesta
2. Orange
3. Sugar
4. Fiesta

Answers please ...

From the BCS website it sounds like this order is incorrect.

Any BCS bowl game(s) still remaining unfilled will submit a listing of its top three team selections to fill its at-large slot. Any team that is guaranteed a berth in a BCS bowl game and that has not already placed in such a game must be listed among such bowl game's first two selections. Each BCS bowl will then be given its highest preference of teams.

In a situation where two or more bowls select the same team(s) with their choices, the priority of selection goes initially to the bowl making the larger per team payment and then rotates to the other bowls not given first priority in a previous year. For the bowls not hosting the national championship game this season, the following selection priority will apply if necessary:

  1. FedEx Orange Bowl
  2. Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
  3. Nokia Sugar Bowl

It looks like the Fiesta Bowl would pick first due to losing the Big 12 Champ
the Orange bowl would have Miami and pick second
The Fiesta Bowl would pick 3rd
Then the Sugar Bowl would have Bama and whoever is left over.

Given this I would set the matchups like this:
Rose: USC v Texas
Orange: Miami v PSU or OSU (if they want an NC rematch from 03)
Fiesta: ND v PSU or OSU or VT
Sugar: Bama v WVU

I dont know about that as Tenn. has a fine defensive team. Having said that OSU would really make ND work for it's points as Tenn. did. I cant say who would win but it would be a match-up of one of the best offenses in college football vs one of the best defenses. ND'S defense has improved as has your offense. Both special team can score as well so it might be interesting....
Clearly you didn't watch the LSU game. Great offenses can indeed break down a great defense, but Tennessee is not one of those. Did you see the game against LSU? They were out of position so many times it was ridiculous. That was a battle of who could play worse and still win.

Great offenses can indeed break down a great defense! Good point ala ND 's OFFENSE VS OSU'S DEFENSE!

I said it can happen, but more often than not, the better defense wins out. If you watched the LSU game, you would not mistake the Tennessee team for a great defense.

I am impressed with ND this year, and obviously am impressed by USC. But I still want to see both of them face a tough defense.

I must be the only person here that doesn't want ND in a BCS game... I'd like them to take the financial hit of not going to a BcS game...

They already play 1/3 of their schedule against the Big Ten... join the conference!!!!!

Let me say this right now: there is 0, and I mean ZERO chance of OSU playing ND in a BCS Bowl this year. Let me tell you why:

When the smoke clears on the BCS, there will be # 1 & # 2 in the Rose Bowl (obviously).

Then you have the conference commitments to each Bowl: SEC Champ goes to the Sugar, ACC Champ goes to the Orange.

Then you have the Big Ten Champ, Big East Champ, & two At-Larges (one of whom WILL be Notre Dame) for the 3 Bowls to select from.

The Fiesta Bowl will select first & last from those pools of teams.

So who is the most attractive team to the Fiesta, and who is the least attractive??

Obviously, the most attractive would be ND, and the least attractive would be the Big East Champ, most likely WVU. That's your Fiesta Bowl match-up right there.

Once ND gets the invite, there's no WAY OSU is falling back down to the Fiesta for the last pick. Absolutely no way. The Sugar or Orange will gobble OSU up, and there's no way either will select WVU or any of the Big East teams over the Buckeyes.

In my eyes, Notre Dame vs. West Virginia is pretty much set in stone.

I agree.

1. Quality of competition has nothing to do with the BCS. Amen

2. Notre Dame will absolutely Kill anyone from the Big East... The East Coast media will love it. It guarantees a huge TV audiance so sponsors love it.

3. Notre Dame has NO incentive to play us. Why risk a 10 - 2 season and Top 5/10 finish when you can play a cupcake from the Big East? Which is why they might duck the Orange Bowl where they'd have to beat Miami... an unlikely outcome.

4. Notre Dame at 10 - 2 will always finish ahead of any other 10 - 2 team.

5. Notre Dame at 5 - 6 will still have bowls begging them to come out. They're a big part of the reason the 6 win rule got established.

I think you've nailed it and I also think that because of the way it's going to play out Va Tech will not get a BCS bid. The only bowls they can play in are Fiesta and Sugar (b/c the ACC champ is going to be in the Orange and they don't want a rematch or two ACC teams playing). The Sugar is going to get stuck with the SEC champ, whoever that is, and the Big East survivor, whoever that is. That leaves as the only bowl availbable for Va Tech as the Fiesta and they're not going to ship their relatively small fan base across the country.

I don't think the above means we get in, but it does mean Va Tech is out. I could easily see the following at-large selection take place.
1. Fiesta-ND
2. Orange-SEC runner-up (LSU-Bama-GA, all much closer to Miami than OSU and none of which would have problems bringing a crowd)
3. Fiesta-PSU
4. Sugar-Big East

Assuming we win out, I'd say it looks like Capital One versus the remainder of GA, LSU or Bama and I wouldn't complain too much about a game with any of them. I would say the only thing we have going for us with the Orange would be the promotion of the rematch of the 2003 Fiesta because proximity wise I would think the Orange would go SEC. Now, if the Orange would rather have a Miami/PSU matchup, then I think it's entirely possible we go to the Fiesta to play ND.
