OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

OSU transfer portal SF target Darrion Williams officially withdrew from the NBA draft today. Supposedly OSU is in contention, but some have said BYU (again!?!) is in the lead. I expect Williams to end up elsewhere, because we never seem to land the big fish in basketball, but it would be great if we could for once.

It doesn't really matter but now it seems the buzz is that Williams will go to Kansas. Puff Johnson also has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Micah Parrish, and seems more likely than Williams for sure.

Ohio State Basketball Transfer Portal Target Darrion Williams Commits to NC State

Just sayin': Puff Johnson may not get another year of eligibility. He's already played in 5 seasons and would need some kind of NCAA ruling to get a 6th year.

Penn State basketball’s Puff Johnson to enter transfer portal despite no remaining eligibility

Johnson completed his fifth season of college eligibility earlier this year. He spent the first three years of his career at North Carolina before transferring back to his home state and spending the past two seasons with the Nittany Lions. In 2024-25, Johnson used the extra year of eligibility available to him because of the COVID-19 pandemic to play a fifth year.

Johnson dealt with injuries during his career — he was limited to 14 games as a freshman at North Carolina in 2020-21 and 17 games this past year at Penn State — but that missed time doesn't seem as if it would reach the threshold to qualify for a medical redshirt.

But he follows a trend of players whose eligibility has seemingly expired that are entering the transfer portal. The looming House vs. NCAA antitrust settlement could change eligibility framework, which has traditionally been athletes having five years to play four.

Top transfer portal player linked to the Ohio State basketball team

The Ohio State basketball team is hoping to bounce back and land a transfer portal player after losing out on another one.

The Ohio State basketball team is looking for something good to happen. After losing out on Darrion Williams, the Buckeyes aren't doing great on the transfer portal front. Even though they have landed a few guys from the portal, none of them are true difference-makers.

Losing out on Williams certainly hurts, but he's not the only big-time transfer portal player that the Ohio State Buckeyes are in on. Jamir Watkins, a 6'7 guard from Florida State, is in the transfer portal, and Ohio State is one of the schools that he is considering.

Watkins is one of the best scorers in the transfer portal, averaging 18.4 points per game last season for the Seminoles. Adding a player of his size and skill would be huge for the Buckeyes heading into a big season for Jake Diebler in his second year as head coach.

The Ohio State basketball team has a shot to land dymanic guard Jamir Watkins from the transfer portal

Ohio State has a chance at Watkins, but there are plenty of other schools in on him. This is the kind of player that Diebler would love to have in his system. Defensively, he's versatile because of his size. Offensively, he does a great job of getting to the rim. He can rebound, too.
