OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Nick Davidson, the one big man that Eleven Warriors said OSU was recruiting, just committed to Clemson. :panic:
Jonathan Powell committed to UNC.

Figured we might have a shot at Powell, Davidson was a pipe dream, shocked Clemson is his destination though.

This is the trend though, we are gonna end up with scraps after everyone else is done feasting. Get ready for some obscure big man from the Horizon league to get "excited" about.

Well the article from March 27 stated OSU had a zoom meeting with Christoph Tilly, 7-foot 225# center from Santa Clara who averaged 12 ppg and 4.9 rpg last season en route to 2nd-team all WCC. I don't think Tilly is what we need. Pharrel Payne (A&M) is in the portal, he's 6'9" 230#, could be kind of what we need, but he could follow Buzz Williams.

I have to ask, as I see other similar type programs out there landing good players out of the portal left and right. Does OSU seriously not have the NIL that other programs like UM, Auburn and Alabama have? It makes no sense to me that those other programs are out there snaring good players quickly, some even are still playing, and OSU has only gotten a backup guard in 3 weeks since the season ended.

The hoops program clearly gets little care from the athletic department so why would NIL people want to pour tons of money into it? Maybe if they actually took the effort to make a hire of a coach that actually brings at least some enthusiasm they coulda worked up some support but right now the program is in a complete stale state.

scUM Auburn and Bama are all killing it coach and play wise, meanwhile our AD is content with sub .500 conference, no postseason seasons.

It really makes perfect sense why nobody of merit wants to come play here. I can't blame them at all either.

Look at 1 year ago. UM had a terrible season, fired the coach. They were NOT "killing it" at all. But they snagged 5 starters out of the portal, including high value players like Goldin and Wolf. If we keep Bruce, I'm just asking us to get 1 high value player.

scUM reached the sweet 16 in their first season with their new coach. We did not even make the tournament. Just look at the results. Yea he brought in a bunch of transfers, but they landed. There lies the difference. They weren't killing it before, you're right. But the new coach is off to a much much better start there than Diebler is here.

Auburn and Alabama who historically care way more about football are indeed killing it though.

I think Tilly is about as good as they realistically can do. He's not a upper end elite player but he will be more productive than and a upgrade over Bradshaw at least.

Just sayin':

1) Tilly only averaged 22.6 minutes per game this last season: however, on the upside he only averaged 2.7 personal fouls.

2) Still could use another C out of the portial.

Well, first of all, we have to keep in mind that the transfer portal does not offer unlimited options. There are only going to be a handful of quality big men in there every year, and it's very easy to overrate the talent in the portal because when teams are desperate for talent, everyone looks good. Tilly is a good player, I'm glad OSU got him, but we'll have to see just how good of an addition he proves to be. OSU clearly has a skillset they want in their bigs, they want guys who can face the basket, stand beyond the 3-point arc, be a threat to shoot the 3, and pull opposing bigs out of the paint so they can run the hi-low & have other guys be able to cut to the basket and get easy opportunities. Clearly Tilly's skillset gives them a strategic piece to their offense. He certainly has some skills at passing and dribbling that you don't see in a lot of taller players.

The concern I have is defense - is Tilly going to be able to stop a big like Vlad Goldin 1-on-1 when he tries to push around the defender to get to his spots? It's hard for me to say yes to that. OSU needs to have somebody who can be the backbone of the defense, be the stopper in the post and clean the glass. It seems to me that they are planning to do that by committee, so by saying it's everyone's role, it's really no one's role.

I wonder, is OSU done adding to the 4-5 spots? Obviously Ivan and Tilly are 5s, while Stewart and Bynum are like 4/5 tweeners who probably will see significant time at the 5 but could see minutes at the 4 as needed. Royal will start at the 4. I am still hopeful we get a defensive stopper for the post, but starting to lose hope there & it could be that OSU is hoping Ivan can develop into that to an extent. I believe they are going to look to add a starting wing player to fill the role that Micah Parrish had this past season & that may be the one last big addition to this team for next season (assuming Bruce comes back).

I think if Tilly is even just a average B1G player that's a massive win for us. Considering what a letdown Bradshaw was this year. I think if Bradshaw put together a even average level performance we maybe win a couple of those close games where we fell apart late and make it to the dance.

Defense will remain a concern yes, but he's a nice addition offensively at minimum.

Diebler says he is looking for toughness, experience, and a winning-first mentality in his additions out of the portal.

I was wondering why they would target a player like Bryan Etumnu, I suppose that explains it. They do want to add some teeth to the team on defense, and that is where that kind of guy would fit in to the rotation. The problem is they also need 3-point shooting, though, so a Micah Parrish-type player is really what I would say would be their biggest need right now. I kind of expect them to add 2 more players, a wing shooter is the given, and perhaps they will also add another glue guy forward to replace Mahaffey.
