OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Interesting that the reasons given why Big Z played so little at UAB was because he was too slow, yet some are intimating he is faster than Frease.

I would have rather taken Frease and redshirted him ( then he'd slip into BJM's slot when he leaves as a 1&d ). I don't know why TM and staff didn't recruit Frease harder. Instead they end up scrambling to find a C!

From recent reports tho it sounds like Z could be the real deal tho so we'll have to hope he ends up better than Frease.

I'd think they'd take Orton - if he were to want to come - but doubt they'd use up BJM's ship on anyone else at this point. Too many offers out to the 10 class to afford to yet.

UAB was a run and gun team and he struggled with that.

It would be nice if you to supply a quote or a link to where you obtained people making those statements. There are not many big man that can play the helter-skelter game that UAB plays but I have read all of the posts on this thread and don't see where people have made the statement that you are talking about. Do you expect a 7' 265 lb. guy get up-and-down the court like a
6'9"+, or even less, player.

You've conceded that Z was a bad fit for UAB, so I'm assuming you are looking for the quote that Frease was too slow for OSU. Namely, this one:

Disagree on Frease...Kenny Frease would of slowed us down tremendously...I think that Z is more athletic...

I think Kenny can be good in the right system, but that wouldn't of been here...

If that's directed at me, I would say that any 7' player would have problems with a run and gun offense and not just at UAB. I have not seen Frease play and I can't speak for 40 but DaytonBuck speaks very highly of him.

Litl,
I can't remember exactly where but there are plenty of other boards and discussions outside of this one about many topics. Several UAB fans mentioned his lack of PT had more to do with his lack of mobility than skills - again I can't remember where I saw the thread - on some UAB board I believe. You may chalk it up to being miffed that he bailed but it didn't come off that way to me. Maybe they are wrong or UAB didn't fit his style of play but I also think we are looking at more uptempo starting this year ( with a 4G approach and having to make up for it by being deeper and rotating more guys in and out ). I don't think it's inappropriate to question why his PT and production were so low - given some of the positives. I try to look at positives and negatives and not just blow sunshine and daisies. Several have reported that he looks like he has tremendous upside and we buckeye fans hope that a year in our program will transform him, certainly. But we tend to hear ONLY THE positives about everyone we sign and our "hit rate" with JUCOs and XFERs is no better than others ( 50-50 at best ).

Lewis came in with proven production at this level and panned out. KM came in with only hope and "potential" and hasn't so far. Foster worked out, Mayes didn't. It isn't an exact science and all, but some things are better indicators than others. Lewis had production and stats at a lower-level program that gave a good indication he would produce here as well. We don't have that in Big Z so there will and should be doubt. The timing is also a question. Was this another desparation take ( similar to KM and Hill - or a Jernigan in JO's regime ) due to such poor results with attracting any inside talent in the 09 class? Such "summer"/late moves have not been productive or beneficial in the recent past SO FAR ( like 0-fer from my recollection ).

I'm hearing that Hill may be much improved ( and is working extremely hard ) and may play a more significant role this season than many of us have projected, but we'll have to see about that. KM is said to be the same as he's been. Doesn't mean Z will follow suit but TM is saying some of the same things ( like that he'll help in practice this year against BJM - sounds earily similar to KM and Oden ). So there is reason for skepticism at this point too.

z is not a kyle madsen situation...

I stil have hope for Madsen...I think that he can see some time, but Z has more potential than that Madsen and is farther advanced coming in than Madsen was...

Remember Z was only 17 last year...Michael Jordan hand selected the kid because he loved his skills...UAB fans have said that he got pushed around last year, probably what we saw with KK at times last year, but he is going to get an entire year to work on the weights and his game before starting to play here...Just think about KK in his junior year compared to his freshmen season in strength or what it would be...

It is going to take some work, and we have coaches that do a great job with big guys...Even UAB fans will tell you that they don't...UAB was up and down the court, thus is it wasn't his style...We will be up and down some as well, but not a run and gun style offense...We use the big man inside, along with pick n rolls, so I think that he will be fine in our offense...

ive seen frease play a couple of times in high school. i did s small blurb in his thread if youd like to look that up...
basically good hands decent player, lower level b10 max type player.

personally i see this as a two fold move
1-in the hockey world this is likely a "depth signing" he isnt a guy who is going to be expected to play mega mins as a starter but a guy who will come in and steal mins and play a role.
2-keep in mind you have a rs year in there which should be benieficial.

heck all kinds of moves havent worked out optomist, off the glass charlie bass, jernigan, some may say stockman etc. thad matta gets paid to make these choices...

Charles "off the glass" Bass, LOL one of the funniest moments in our history. I wanted to call him Ollie "from the Hoosiers movie" because after he banked the first one in he actually TRIED TO BANK the second in an instant classic "I meant to do that" moment! What a sight!

But he is not germane to this discussion since he was a h.s. recruit ( albeit an ultra skinny questionable one ) but then you'd have to add Shamar Herron ( opposite of skinny, but how a 6'9 kid can make only 42% of his FG as a SR in high school - at that size he should shoot 60% just from dunks and putbacks alone - and get a ride here is still beyond belief to me ) and gads of others. I also still laugh at how Randy gave a ship to a hemophiliac Center who couldn't take any contact ( Mark Howard out of Canton I believe ) still boggles my mind.

I was talking strictly about xfers and JUCOs and even more precisely about those taken in the summer when a "hole" in the roster needs to be filled( desparation sets in ). Xfers Sullinger(hit) and Stockman(gunning poisonously selfish miss) and many of the JUCOs don't fit that - Jernigan and Hill certainly do. Z could be looked at that way since the 09 class insiders have turned their backs on TM for the most part.

Again there are plenty of positives around Z. I'm just taking the counterpoint here to say there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical too. TM and staff felt he was worth it - but they also liked Mayes, Hill, Madsen, and thought highly of Bell and Wallace, so there are no guarantees and they aren't perfect on such decisions/guesses - they are human after all. Here's hoping this one turns out great tho! Jury's still out on some of them obviously!

You cannot fill your roster with all one and done or two and done players. You have to bring in some players who have not been MacDonald's All-Americans. It just won't happen. The players you mentioned filled in some holes for the Buckeyes even though they might not have played in crucial minutes.

Also, I do not know what 09 insiders TM has really missed on this year because there were really no big guys in the state of Ohio which makes things a little difficult when it comes to recruiting. I guess I would like to know who you realistically thought we had a chance at. I know that you want the guys to do well but please wait to they step on the floor as a Buckeye before you start to judge them especially "Z". He is very young and sitting out one year will help him tremendously IMO

I'm still convinced Madsen is probably better than anyone gives him credit. Old Bobby Huggins was out with Madsen for dinner but for his unfortunate situation. I don't anyone can underestimate the effect of sitting out a Redshirt year at Vanderbilt and than sitting out a transfer for year at Ohio State. 2 straight years of not playing in a competitive game. That's a big factor in a players development, Kyle was essentially a freshman last year with 2 years removed from game action.

As far Frease I think this says it all about what kind of a talent and potential he has as youngster.

He (Frease) played for an American all-star under-19 team that competed against seven other countries in Douai, France, in late June. Frease was the only all-tournament team member from the U.S. squad.
Enquirer

The roster for the U-19s has 2 one and dones in this years freshman class. Tyreke Evans who's headed to Memphis and Demar DeRozan of USC. Both are five star players with both rivals and scout.

Talent on this team is good and he was the only one to get international honors.

Nic Wise, Houston, Texas, University of Arizona
Demar DeRozan, Los Angeles, Calif., University of Southern California
Tyreke Evans, Aston, Pa., University of Memphis
Jeff Withey , San Diego, Calif., University of Arizona
Kenny Frease, Massillon, Ohio, Xavier University
Oscar Bellifield, Los Angeles, Calif., UNLV
Tyler Griffey, Wildwood, Mo., University of Illinois
Howard Thompkins, Atlanta, Ga., University of Georgia
Tobias Veal, Savannah, Ga, University of Colorado
Augustine Rubit, Houston, Texas, Smiley High School
Brendan Lane, Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin High School

Jeff Withey was four star center who commited to Louisville and then signed with Arizona.

Frease is a legit high level BCS player.

Z I think was as mentioned earlier young and on a different continent as a 17 year old. Mike Davis doesn't run the Mike Anderson 40 Minutes of Hell system at UAB anymore. Any Z arguments of lack of speed could stick here. I saw a couple of UAB games on CSTV but his played didn't register in my memory. I'd rather have the Frease but if Matta sees fit to give this kid a scholarship he probably's worth it.
