Orlas King "Neutron Man" passed away today

I was lucky enough to have been able to sit down and have a 20 minute conversation with him. He stayed at the Chapparal Suites in Scottsdale during the Fiesta Bowl NC game, and was waiting for his family on a bench. I sat down with him to chat for a little while. The one story he told me that has always stuck with me, is how he once fired a kid with too much talent. He told the kid he was doing him a favor by firing him, because he was capable of doing bigger things. We didn't talk too much football, but I had told him how I lived in Scottsdale and I was there picking up my family. He told me how it was getting difficult for him to travel because of bad knees, but this is what he loved. He saw I was a young sharp guy and sent me along with the advice to aim high and enjoy life.... he seemed to have followed his own advise.

Exactly. It boggles my mind that people think that to pay respect to some departed, you eliminate all ties with that person. Although great American icons such as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley have long passed, their memory lives on in their words and music. Thankfully for us, radio stations didn't say, "Let's play one final Hendrix song, and then retire them all forever." You really don't bestow honor on anyone by eliminating their memory. The best way to help perpetuate his memory and what he stood for is to keep play "Neutron Dance" as if he hadn't died. I guarantee you, if the song is no longer played, folks will forget about him. However, continue to play the song, and his legacy will live on. You younger members, especially those who recently have had the stork bless your family, should be able to have your kids 10, 15, 20 years from now ask why TBDBITL plays "that song", and you will be able to explain it's relationship to Ohio State football just as well as you would be able to tell them about "Hang On Sloopy". The man has forever become a part of fan history--a true Buckeye icon. Don't dishonor his memory by refusing to play "his" song.

I think if they stop Neutron Dance.. Ground zero for the outcry will be here.

I understand that people want to try to act the 'right' way and be respectful... but how do you think Neutron Man would react to the end of the Neutron Dance?

No offense, but if we really wanted to read unmoderated stupidity, we'd all still visit boards that allow it. There's no need to drag that stuff in here, even if it's just to flame the original poster. Yes, he's a grade A assclown. Yes, morons like him are why many of us let go of other sites a long time ago. Posting that is like telling us that an old girlfriend is now fatter and uglier than ever, hooked on crack and living in a trailer park with an ex-con. We've moved on. :biggrin:

Now, back to the topic. I'm 100% with the guys who say DON'T retire the Neutron Dance. Mili is absolutely correct, and put it very well. You honor people by remembering them, not forgetting them. I know there's a few band members on this site, so please do communicate that to your directors. Maybe if it was played once per game, ala the jump around thing, and everyone would dance, that would not only be fitting, but would be one of the best new traditions in college football.

For tradition to be relevant, it has to grow and be added to all the time. This is an opportunity to do just that.

I know some are trying to honor Neutron man but wouldn't it be a better tribute to have the band and crowd dance forever in his honor every time the Score board started that song up !!! I mean that would be awesome to pay tribute to him with the whole crowd getting up and dancing to that song and even maybe have a cartoon of Neutron man up there with his trademark hat on dancing.
I don't know about him but I'd be so happy to have my name and spirit(no puns) live on like that and in that way !!! :groove:

The alternative would be just silence and in a few years none of the new young kids would even remember him. That would SUCK !! He was such a nice guy and showed how a true Buckeye should be. No matter what good or abd he always cheered for his beloved Buckeyes .

A little update: tomorrow, apparently they are putting together a presentation for the scoreboard and the band will be playing the Neutron Dance at the end of the third quarter in place of Hang On Sloopy. That is all that I know for now, still no clue what will become of the song after tomorrow. I'll continue to keep everyone posted on that.

I think it would be cool if the whole stadium got up and danced, maybe it could become tradition to play the Neutron Dance after the first quarter and keeping sloopy as a tradition after the third quarter.
