Chief: I *strongly* recommend reading up on how to tour Orlando before you go. It is imperative to have some semblence of a "plan" so you don't waste your time.

JCOSU is correct. At least try to go with a plan. My wife is excellent at this. We usually schedule a free day in the middle and at the end. That way we can rest or go back and do something we really enjoyed.

I go for business once a year. When I hit the ESPN Club it was crowded and loud. It was after football season so I wasn't as interested. How old are the boys? They may enjoy it.

Yeah she has a plan (thats how she runs my life) and she has read alot about Orlando I just asked her to give me an hour or two at the ESPN CLUB. We are planning on hitting Disney,Epcot,Animal Kingdom and can't remember the others off the top of my head.

The twin boys are 10 now and my little boy is 6 so we hope they are old enogh to have fun and not have to be babied.

My best suggestion to you on Orlando: make sure you have plenty of quarters and one dollar bills. If you're on a freeway that isn't I-4, its a toll road. And the toll roads aren't turnpike style either (the Florida turnpike does go though there though) they stop you seemingly every mile and a half for another quarter or fifty cents. Don't get me wrong, I like going to Orlando from time to time seeing as how its a one hour drive for me, but the traffic can be horrible so be prepared. My favorite Orlando spots are Citywalk at Universal and Downtown Disney...

We're headed down to Orlando on for a week in January.

I know some folks on here live/have lived in Orlando. Any recommendations on things to do apart from the amusement parks scene (that we are NOT doing).

EDIT - to be more helpful, we are mostly looking for things to do outdoors. Probably head over to the gulf coast one day, Atlantic coast one day, Everglades for a day. A lot of birding on the docket.

Kind of Disney-related, but when I lived down there last year I enjoyed heading over to Celebration, just south of Disney off 192 (Disney started the town, you can tell by the consistency of design and immaculate planning). Market Street Cafe has some delicious food and serves breakfast all day. Their pancakes are delicious and gigantic (think somewhere around the size of a small to medium pizza). A short stack is one pancake, a full stack is two. I've only ever been able to do the short stack, and I am full with barely enough room left for a mixed berry cobbler for dessert, which is also very delicious! The downtown section is generally filled with odds and ends shops now, although there is a Starbucks, a "tavern" (which is popular with many of the attractions crews at Disney), and a more formal dining option. It is a great place to spend a morning/afternoon just walking and relaxing. There is a walking path that starts over next to the hotel on the lake and goes back through a few of the communities and is a very peaceful, relaxing walk. I've never seen a gator walking back there, but I would not doubt they are there, as I have seen a few in the main lake around which the downtown area is situated.

A local zoo (believe it is Brevard County) offers a zip line course through some of the exhibits, though I haven't done that. Gator Land offers that as well (my girlfriend did that, she liked it, except for the fact that she was going over gator ponds :lol: ). You might want to check out Wekiwa Springs State Park. I never ventured there, but I have heard some good things about it, and it did interest me. Oh, and if you want to catch a Buckeye basketball game while you're there, the Buffalo Wild Wings on International Drive is an official gamewatch location of the Central Florida Alumni Club. Although not as festive (and filled with Buckeyes) as football games, there will usually be a good sized group of fans there for big games and primetime/weekend games. They also have another location a little more to the north of the theme park district, but B-Dubs is where I spent my time last football season and always had a blast.

I'll try and get some links and more info for you after I get out of my class tonight.

I read about Gatorland as a good destination for birding, too, so that sounds like a winner. Although my wife is not keen on alligators, the heck with her. I have to cope with snakes on paths (so many poisonous snakes in Florida.....*shudder*), she can deal with a couple gators. :biggrin:

I was excited about the possibility of OSU football maybe being in Florida that week that I didn't even think about hoops. :smash:

Not a bad stretch to miss, although I might be able to get away with going out to watch one of them.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Spent the last two days there and heading back again tomorrow.

Holy shit, that place is simply unbelievable.

I'll get some pictures posted some time. Ridiculous.

Eastern Diamondback rattlers in the scrub palm can get to HUGE length.
