Orioles 2012 thread of pain and despair....

  • Duquette, Orioles optimistic at FanFest

BALTIMORE -- It was a different vibe at the Orioles annual FanFest on Saturday, with last year's Derrek Lee addition and rumors of the soon-to-be-signed Vladimir Guerrero giving way to a sense of optimism unmatched in any of the team's more recent campaigns. 2012's unofficial kickoff party at the Baltimore Convention Center was more subdued, as new executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette continues to focus efforts on less-flashy upgrades, front-office changes and efforts to fix the organization's player development and Minor League system.

But for the fans who braved Baltimore's first real snowfall to pack the Convention Center, the atmosphere was anything but disappointing, as nearly every Orioles player turned out for an afternoon of autographs, meet-and-greets, and interviews that left everyone involved eager for Spring Training.

"Winning is important to me," said shortstop J.J. Hardy, who believes this O's squad can exceed expectations. "I see a lot of potential. I really do. I feel like we've got a lot of young pitchers, and I think it's time for them to step up and do what they are capable of. I know that's what everyone has been saying for a couple of years now, but they've got a few more years under their belt, and I think it's time for them to go out and do it."

I can draw three things from last year.

    1. They eliminated the Red Sox.

    2. With basically no real pitching, they were almost .500 into May

    3. JJ Hardy needs his fuckin eyes examined.

I'm going to say this year will be a 72-90 type season at best. If Matusz comes back somewhat healthy they may even get there.

Buck Showalter is a great manager, he just doesn't have nearly all the horses that you need to win consistently in that division.

That being said, I love watching Adam Jones and Weiters behind the dish, and have had the opportunity to meet Reimold once or twice.

I was wearing my Orioles Boonie hat today that I got from Camden yards years ago. My daughter said "Isn't that, like, a baseball team or something?" I said "Yeah, they're 'LIKE' a baseball team. But not really anymore." :-( damnit.

    That's harsh lol.

Those days of Cal and Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson and others seem so far removed

Sorry, but I have to post this:

I'm a Yanks fan. Showalter always gets the boys going though. They play hard most of the time just don't get a great result.

Orioles Lose To Community College Team

The Baltimore Orioles lost 2-1 to a Florida community college team on Tuesday, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota chapter, beat the Orioles 2-1 in an eight-inning charity game at Ed Smith Stadium. Although the college team did use one Orioles pitcher and catcher, the rest of both teams? rosters remained the same.

When MLB.com asked Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel about the experience he said, ?I got my work in, so let?s leave it at that.?

Hammel allowed two runs and three hits over five innings while the SCF freshman Orlando Rivera went 2 for 3 with a stolen base, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. This same college team beat the Pittsburgh Pirates three years ago that included a Pittsburgh roster of mostly rookies and minor leaguers unlike last Tuesday?s game which included most of the Orioles starting players.

The inevitable April swoon will soon befall the Orioles and we'll be back to the days of having an "ace" pitcher with a 6 ERA sooner or later.

Minnesota just sucks. Maybe this means the Orioles won't be the only team that loses 100 games this year.

Either the AL East sucks or the Orioles aren't as bad as I thought they were....

Either way, they are in first place by half a game on April 18th. This might be the latest they've been in first this "far" into a season since 1998 or so....
