Oregon 8 at Boise St 19 (Final)

I'm appalled that Blount is losing the rest of his season. As I said before, I thought a punishment was necessary, but this blows me away. It saddens me that the governing bodies feel the need to act so swiftly. Is it not conceivable that we learn more about this incident in the coming week? What if it's reported that Mr. Whitefolks (the BSU player) spat a racial epithet? Not only will all the self-righteous media sh!teaters calling for Blount's career have to eat their own sh!t, we'll also have to seriously reflect on the fact that we vilified an amateur athlete for being just that...an amateur.

1) He's been in trouble before.
2) Under no circumstances should you expect to engage/attempt to engage in physical/verbal fights with fans and expect "minor" punishment. If all he did were yell at fans, he still probably would've gotten a game or two..
3) He punched someone in the face on the field.
4) It didn't look like the dude said anything other than "ass-whooping" followed with laughter.
5) He kept up with his antics for way too long, including resisting restraint by police officers.

All of that combined = big punishment. He was being more than just an amateur athlete there.. The amateur athlete part ended after the whistle. After the whistle he's representing the University of Oregon, and I'm pretty sure they don't agree with punching in the face after losses, no matter what provokes it.

If the BSU dude said something racial, he should get suspended too. Looked like he was just being immature though. I bet if it did come out that the BSU dude said something racial that Oregon would release a statement that goes something like.. "The University of Oregon is disappointed to hear that the cause of Mr. Blount's actions were racially motivated, but under no circumstance do we feel that violence is the best course of action."

I wouldn't blame the guy for punching him in the face if it were racial, but you just can't punch people in the face like that.. suspensions of both players would be necessary.

Agreed. This wasn't an isolated incident, he's had behavioral issues in the past. Add in that it wasn't just the punch. He shoved/hit his own teammate, struggled with uniformed police, continued wilding out all the way to the locker room and attempted to engage fans (provoked or not, that's a major no-no). It all felt very Ron Artest. The kid obviously has anger issues and hopefully he gets help.

Even a large majority of UO fans (on message boards at least) feel the punishment is just. At least he's allowed to continue practicing/working out with the team in hopes of an NFL career and retains his scholorship.

Gotta admit.. it was a helluva punch... very quick... and a hammer shot... that big boy was goin down...

In my college days, I was pretty much a fiery temper.. and not sure what I would have done if someone popped me on the shoulder and started spewing in my face...

Not condoning... just empathasizing

If the BSU player dropped the n word, than I woulda done the same...That said, he really coulda used more control when it came to goin after the fan's. I think that it wasn't the punch that maybe got him the year, but more how acted out of control he acted after the whole thing...

Also I gotta say...man that was a fucking nasty right by Blout....

Felonious Assault (and that's what it was because there is zero actual legal reality to any notion of "fighting words" racial or not) followed up by a physical struggle with uniformed on-duty police officers.

I'm sorry, but if any single fan in the stadium had done the same thing, they would still be rotting in Boise Municipal Lockup.

His suspension is the least of his problems. Mr. Blount should get on his knees and pray that some young, aggressive Boise DA is not seriously contemplating charges right now.

That being said, the Boise player should sit a game or two for trash talking, and if it were proven to be racial, should be kicked off the team. Not really betting that the latter would happen in Boise though.

The initial comment (which I bolded) seems to ignore the fact that Hout tapped him on the helmet and the shoulder as he was saying something to Blount. Blount did not initiate the physical contact between the two of them, and I'd say that's a very significant aspect of the incident. Also, slow-motion replays tend to make it appear like there was more time than there actually was between the taunt and the reactionary punch.

I believe there should be no legal action against Blount. I thought that at least a 3-game suspension was in order, but I can't say whether or not the rest of the season was too harsh because I'm not aware of his past problems as an Oregon football player.
