Just point out that they can call us Ohio A&M all they want. It doesn't negate the fact that, when the time came to formally endow a flagship university for the state of Ohio, Fredo was found sorely lacking for the role and passed over. In fact the state leadership went to the unique lengths among Great Lakes states of founding an entirely new university to fulfill that role rather than taking the chance that one of the two substandard existing public colleges would screw it up.

Why wouldn't we call ourselves the state's flagship university? It's what we are. It's what the state leadership of the 1860s founded us to be, passing over a couple of older but insignificant little state universities in the process. It was a decision ratified by the state legislature when they chose to make Ohio State the first public university to be funded on a permanent, annual basis--essentially making it the state's first true public university as we would understand the term today. It's what the state leadership felt in choosing to establish the state's first public law school, engineering college, medical school and graduate school at the new institution. It's what the state legislature wrote into Ohio law in 1906 with the Eagleson Bill. It's what the Association of American Universities recognized in electing Ohio State to membership in 1916--still the only public Ohio university that's even come close to membership. It's what Governor Harry Davis obviously concluded in 1921 upon deciding that 72% of the state's levy for university construction would go to Ohio State with the remainder split between the two little brother--albeit older--institutions.

In 1908, it was certainly the studied conclusion of the chairman of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Henry Pritchett and concisely expressed in his letter to Ohio Governor Judson Harmon explaining why Ohio's application to have its public university professors covered by the Carnegie Foundations pension plan had been rejected. Pritchett wrote, Ohio State University might fairly be called a university, but Ohio and Miami are certainly not university grade institutions. If The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio could be relieved of the pressures created by the two older institutions, then the state of Ohio might find itself the proud possessor of a university system similar to the one in Wisconsin.

It's a position and status reflected in the decisions of many today. It's reflected in the number of National Merit Scholars of whom more enroll each year at Ohio State than every other public university in Ohio combined. It's reflected in the number of students with a 30+ on their ACT who are almost twice as likely to choose Ohio State (27% of last year's freshman class) over Miami of Ohio (15% of last year's freshman class). It's reflected in the number of National Academy of Sciences and Engineering members who chose to take a faculty job in Ohio--23 at Ohio State; 1 at every other Ohio public university combined. It's reflected in the research grant writers in private industry, private foundations and the federal government who underwrite significantly more research at Ohio State (11th most in the nation;7th most among public universities) than every other public university in the state combined.

So let them enjoy their newfound and temporary success in hockey. Let them get their rocks off calling us the Ohio A&M Aggies. Just recognize that, in the larger scheme of things, it is but a minor skirmish in a war in which Miami of Ohio has had its ass handed to it for almost 150 years. Miami of Ohio is a slightly more selective--and infinitely more full of itself--version of Kent State. Then if you do end up sleeping with her, fishhook her hard and ask say over and over, "who's your flagship, baby?"
