Whoa. Hey.
Calm down.
As you already know, Urb rescued the 2012 recruiting class. That class finished ranked 3rd by scout. The 2013 class finished 1st and this year's class is 5th at this point. We should be OK.In their two season-ending losses, Alabama gave up an average of 40 points and 411 yards. After their great run, Alabama was a bit down this year, but I don't think that they're in panic mode yet, like Buckeye fans seem to be.
It's easier to have "juice" when you don't play two top-ten teams at the end of the season.
Ohio State has a lot of holes to fill going forward, but after the near-disastrous 2012 recruiting class, the staff is starting to bring in the talent that it will take to compete in 2014 and beyond.
On Signing Day, it was a great class. Now, not so much. That's why I say to ignore the recruiting rankings, and treat each signee as a zero star college football player and see how he develops from there. As you already know, Urb rescued the 2012 recruiting class. Here's how it breaks down, as of today, as I see it. Obviously, things can change in the future:
No Longer With the Team
1. WR Ricquan Southward
2. LB Luke Roberts
3. DB Najee Murray
4. TE Blake Thomas
5. OL Joey O'Connor
6. DL Se'Von Pittman
7. LB David Perkins
4 JT 3 Urb
Buried on Depth Chart
1. QB Cardale Jones
2. RB Warren Ball
3. WR Michael Thomas
4. DB Devan Bogard (injured, twice)
5. WR Frank Epitropoulos
6. RB Brionte Dunn
7. OL Kyle Dodson
5.5 JT 1.5 Urb
Showed Some Promise in Limited Minutes
1. OL Pat Elflein
2. OL Jacoby Boren
3. DL Jamal Marcus
2 JT 1 Urb
Have Played, Should Be Sitting
1. LB Joshua Perry
2. DB Tyvis Powell
3. LB Cam Williams
4. DB Armani Reeves (does not belong on this list)
2 JT 2 Urb
Current / Future Stars
1. OL Taylor Decker
2. DL Noah Spence
3. DL Adolphus Washington
4. DL Tommy Schutt (need to see him healthy here)
0 JT 4 Urb
So that makes six busts, eight probable busts, seven who could go either way, and four really solid players. Overall, not a good class so far. If the staff can develop Elflein, Boren, and Marcus into functional players, and recruit over Perry, Williams, Powell, and Reeves, then they will have done about as much as possible with this bunch.
I highlighted the JT/Fickell kids in Pink.
Calling Warren Ball and Brionte Dunn probable busts is absurdly premature. Ezekiel Elliott looks like a special back, yet due to Hyde, Braxton and Dontre he barely got the ball. How could you possibly evaluate Ball/Dunn fairly thus far? Next year those two could be the backing up or starting over Elliott. I like the chances of one or both breaking out far better than Rod Smith doing so in year 5.
Like I said, a great close to a bad class, signing 4 studs, a corner coming into his own and a DT with promise if he can stay healthy. That is remarkable work in a few months in an era when 11 months before NSD is too late to offer many kids.
