Game Thread Orange Bowl: tOSU vs Clemson, Jan 3, 8:30 ET, ESPN

IMO, its pretty clear there is a talent gap in the back seven. The problem is being addressed but even the most talented guys need time. I won't even get into the coaching.

I think the thing people are missing is this is Urban's second year. Clearly don't have the talent on the edges to combat when teams load up and press. Urban is ahead of schedule.

With all that said, we turned the ball over 4 times and had just as much to do with the lose as Clemson did.

This may seem a bit like sour grapes but am I the only person who wasn't impressed with Swinney and Morris tonight? Clemson seemed poorly coached with all of the boneheaded penalties they were racking up. Not to mention there were a number of strange playcalls on their side of the ball, most of all that 3rd and 8 with a minute and a half left to go. It's not hard to see why FSU and South Carolina destroyed them.

Awful way to end the season. Lots of things to work on in the offseason.

The defense is what it is. I thought Clemson would run up and down the field all night, although I was disappointed that Boyd had such success running. Too many injuries and too many guys who never had much of an idea what they were supposed to be doing.

As far as the offense goes...I'm a bit baffled. The play calling evaporated as the season went on. Nothing seemed to build upon anything else and it seemed like plays were chosen at random sometimes. There were very few new looks or plays used throughout the back half of the season and the passing game sputtered and gasped into the last quarter of the last game.

Miller has had struggles and obviously needs to come back, but something needs to change with the overall play calling and offensive scheme. The coaches get too comfortable with certain plays and it limits the team when the running game isn't clicking.

what does that say about us...?

I lost my computer during the game, not sure what happened but it is dead. So, I have seen the game only now.

There is not much to add. The defense, with lots of youngsters and injuries, lived up to expectations. The offense showed moments of brilliance, but not enough of them on the night. Miller was good in places, but took an awful lot of abuse. I will be very surprised if he is back next year.

I am deeply sorry that these seniors do not leave with a championship of some kind. They stood with Ohio State through thick and think, watching their coaching staff leave and be reconstituted. They will always be remembered for the 24 game run. As for the coaching staff and remaining players, there is much work to do. Personally, I think the defense is going to need a major restructuring in the coaching staff.

While I am deeply disappointed, I am very proud of this team. Well done, Ohio State!

As has bean pointed out, he didn't lose th game. In fact he almost won it in spite of some other serious problems.
I don't understand this. Ohio State's last four drives of the game ended with: interception, touchdown, fumble, interception.

Can he play at a championship level? There are a lot of people in this program I would ask that question about before him.
I do agree with this. However, to win a championship, you generally need championship-level play from your quarterback, and Miller just isn't there yet, IMO. Will he take his game to the next level in 2014? Who knows....

OL is getting a pass... they weren't good last night.. they weren't good at the B1G championship.. and they weren't very good at scUM
Maybe they're hurt.. but they have been sub-par since mid Nov

I'm biased.. I think the Mike is the key to an OSU defense.. a leader role
Until we have that leader our defense looks like a chicken with no head
Kwon, you up to it?

Miller needs to learn the offense. He needs to learn to throw to spots and trust his receivers. This might be on the receivers, who knows. The receivers are mediocre talents as well. Why isn't Dontre Wilson at WR? He's the play maker, right? Have him learn a position well and then expand the way he's used.

Christ, right now Dontre Wilson is responsible for knowing one play. Did anyone else not know what play was coming when Wilson was in the game? That Jet Sweep is nice, but after the 3rd time I think we got the idea.

Tom Herman was not impressive this season. He's great when playing the Indiana's and Florida AM's of the world, but he has yet to impress in a big game. Part of this may be on the fact that Braxton still can't make reads and deliver the football.

Lots of holes on this team that have been nicely disguised with a weak schedule. This staff has a ton of work to do starting at the top.

Ohio State hasn't defended screens well the last 3 years. The mystery to me was why Clemson didn't just throw them on every play. They were getting 9-15 yards on almost every one.

Trying to not over-react, but I didn't understand why, late in the game, we were running our hurt and fragile QB instead of Carlos.

But in the end, your QB has to make plays in critical situations and our guy didn't. His confidence level took a hit the last fourth of the year for some reason. Freakin Conner Cook and OU's McKnight developed it and we see where that took them.

I don't know what is going on with Brax. Eye on the NFL? His comments about him not being happy about how much he had to run the ball might indicate that he and Herman still have a strained relationship. Whatever it is, they need to resolve it or someone needs to move on.

He has mentioned that fact that he doesn't like all the running.

Well, learn to be a quarterback and you won't have to run all the time. Get rid of the ball. Some of this is on the receivers of course, but Braxton has never been known for reading coverages and finding the open guy (unless he's open by, like, 8 yards).

I'd say it's the execution/technique/talent, your points on the scheme contradict a bit..we play that soft zone because when we man up we end up getting beat for the ball on a constant basis and teams figured out they can exploit that (Clemson had a damn month to watch the film)

In terms of talent compared to the Spartans..they are obviously more talented at this point. I don't see a guy in our back 7 who has shown they can play on Sunday's quite frankly..maybe if some of the younger guys get the right coaching. Whereas Darqueze Dennard is an obvious first rounder.
We get beat because we don't chuck the receiver at the line. How many times do you have to let them run that little screen before you do something different. Hell they ran it minimally 10 time for huge yardage every time sans once or twice.

MSU talent, Dennard was a 2* coming out of high school and their MLB in the Rose, a walk on. Our guys all were recruited by other major programs.

I was never aware they were thought in the past to have a strained relationship. Was there something I missed?

It was featured somewhere (Gameday?) that when Herman first came to Ohio State, Braxton didn't trust him, and that caused problems. Herman was frustrated that he couldn't connect and get close to Brax. Herman eventually found out that Miller has a child, and that supposedly got them to connect and communicate better. But Brax's comments about not liking how much he has had to run the ball would seem to be an unveiled and fairly direct way to say that he doesn't like how Herman has used him. And that would seem to indicate that not all is well in the offensive meeting room.

Where the hell is he going? He's a 4th round pick at best and that's as a WR or KR. The kid can't play QB right now. Look at his completions tonight. He hit some tight windows to be sure, but there were also WIDE open receivers that were so wide open they had to come to a stop to catch the ball. He doesn't "throw guys open". He's not a QB yet. I don't know if he'll ever be one but he sure as hell isn't one now.
We haven't had what I would call a true QB in awhile. We have great athletes playing QB. I hope we have a great QB who has the ability to run someday.
