OPEN DISCUSSION CHANGES

Clarity

As you may or may not have noticed, there have been some changes to the OD forum.

Our 'original' Open Discussion is now "Open Discussion (Work-safe)" (OD-WS). This should be self explanatory. Moderation will get a bit tighter in here, as all posts in this forum should be equally appropriate for work, school, kids -- all audiences. When in doubt, post in or move posts to:

Open Discussion, which is a sub-forum of OD-WS. This is an OPT-IN forum. Meaning you do not automatically have access to it. However, gaining access is quick and easy, and requires no waiting for mod intervention. If you wish to join, click the 'User CP' link on the top grey navbar on any page. From there, scroll down to the bottom of the left navbar, and click the 'Group Memberships' link. Now click the round radio button next to "OD-Mature", and hit the 'Join Group' button. Done. One time task, fire and forget, and entirely reversible.

Romper Room still exists, but is no longer a sub-forum within the site structure. Those seeking unmoderated open discussion should follow the same process as outlined for Open Discussion access to gain access to that forum, and then repeat it selecting the "Rompers" group instead. This one does require admin intervention, so access is not instant. Because of the changes, we will be approving people for this group throughout the day.

I know. Change sucks. I think this is relatively low-impact though, and will allow a better range of OD environments to suit one's needs and tastes. As stated above, when in doubt, regarding the suitability of a new post or thread, go to Open Discussion. Otherwise, keep rolling as you have been in OD-WS. Both forums should see regular use and traffic.

Thanks Clarity, I like this idea. I had become quite leery of clicking certain threads in the old OD from work. That or there could be a completely "tepid" thread that someone would post a half naked hottie in it and then there she was blasted across my monitor at work. Hotties at home are welcomed, but I have to be a bit more careful at work.

I assume I couldn't get access into the mature forum because of my age?

Think of this area as G/PG, and that area as PG-13/light R, where RR is R/NC-17. It's really no different than it was before, but opt-in so that people can make their own decisions about what to see and when.

At 14 you could walk into a PG-13 movie without a problem, and could get into an R movie with parental consent. If you're unsure about whether or not you should be in there, ask one or both of your parents if anything in there presents a problem for them. This isn't about BP telling you what you should or shouldn't see, it's about presenting options so that people can make their own decisions.

So, if you are signed up for the "OD-Mature" forum, will it automatically take off the filter and let all threads into your open discussion? Or is it a totally different forum? Just wondering because I registered over to the opt-in "OD-Mature", but could not find the forum link for it.

Different forum (a sub-forum of the work-safe OD forum, actually). Look for the link above the link to the political discussion forum. It's just called "Open Discussion".

Clarity thanks.

Every since the filter option was deleted, I have been hoping for this. Thanks for helping to make my dream come true. O.K., maybe it wasn't a dream, but I sure have wanted it and ask for it. Thank you.

Ah, but there's still no language filter. Dammit.

You are correct, but that is simply do to the new program. Knowing that I could help facilate a change, ( well maybe not facilitate, but I certainly suggested it) that could improve everyone's posting situation in the work place is a win-win for everyone.
