Ongoing NCAA Stat Rankings Thread (merged)

Jax:
That and the big 104 in TO ratio. We've got a great defense and 2 pretty damn good kickers again, thats it. Smells like a slightly weaker version of 2003 team to me.

As the great philospher Austin Powers once said: Ouch baby. Very ouch.

The jagged blade of truth sinks deep...

Jax just wondernig how the 58 best offense looks to you. Do you like the improvements we are making or are you still down on them.

Well if they could be the 50 something offense and not turn it over we'd be undefeated right now and you wouldn't hear a peep out of me. However last time I checked TO's happen on offense, not defense and therefore that TO ratio is more important than total offensive rank imo.

The 58th ranking looks nice but like I said on another thread, thumping our chest over offensive stats against the IU and MSU defenses is fools gold. As it will be vs Minny, Illinois and Northwestern.

The offense is directly responsible for the 2 losses we have (ironically against the only 2 good defenses we have played) and they won't get a chance to play a good defense again untill scUM. That game alone can either salvage some offensive respectability or complete the trifecta and be responsible for all 3 losses.

Probably not what some BPers want to hear but its the truth. I have higher standards for OSU than to be giddy over beating up IU, I want to see how they do against the other big boys. So far the offense is 0-2 and tried their level best to lose to MSU as well.

I know what you are saying here, but if we are not allowed to thump our chest against teams with no defense why are teams like TTech aloud to when they play dIAA teams.

I agree I hate the turnovers as much as you, and would love for them to be corrected.

The Offense is not squarely to blame for either loss, we play as a team and there were different reasons why we struggled in both games, no reason to rehash them.

Thats why they are TT and we're OSU.

OSU is supposed to hammer weak teams and fans are just satisfied when we do and pissed off when we don't.

TT's of the world have never won shit so they just celebrate the fuck out of any success at all because they never know if it will be the last of it for a long while.

I guess it is just damned if you do damned if you don't. I am not saying I want Ttech offense, but some people pride themselves on numbers which is what this thread is about, and us not having great numbers. If we had top 20 and lost last week to MSU, would you be happy with that.

Also there is a lot more parity in college football than what there used to be. Indiana was not all that bad of a football team, and in all reality we should of beat them 62-0. It is impossible to play a perfect game week in and week out, it just doesnt happen, that is why I don't care about stats as much as some, I care about W's and L's.

this is also somewhat of a transition period in college football. twenty, even ten years ago, most teams ran some variation of the power I. now, you have a team that leads the passing categories averaging almost 600 yds a game. on the other hand, minny is averaging nearly 300yds on the ground. what we as ohio state fans should want, imo, isnt to be at the top of offensive categories, but to find a balance and execute the offense our coaches choose.

As do I, the only thing that matters is W or L.

Looking at the stats just gives you a more defined idea of what is contributing to either the W or L. They are a tool for diagnosis, not an ends unto themselves.

This offense consistently puts our ability to record W's in peril, thats why I am so hard on it.

As for a decent IU team and all that, as I stated on another thread we gained 100 more total yards and 2 more points than the average team does against IU. If you want to take that as a step in the right direction, go ahead. I choose to remain dubious untill they do something against a good defense.

we beat a 4-2 team on the road 41-10 and we got leapt in the USA today poll by PSU?

regardless of PSU's impressive win vs. illinois (2-5 i think) how we lose ground with our victory is beyond me

I don't have a problem with pollsters realizing that a team with 1 less loss than us, and beat us head-to-head, should be ranked ahead of us.

I'm now waiting for them to realize that Texas deserves to be #1, and that tOSU should be ahead of ND, but I'm not holding my breath.

That would make sense if PSU was a spot ahead of us last week, but based on the addition of this weeks results, they moved ahead of us.

But I agree, I don't have a problem in principal with PSU being ranked ahead of us.

Other teams played these guys earlier and padded their offense stats early. We are now just getting in our easier stretch. Out of the top 25 teams the defenses we played in the first stretch ranked 4th toughest.
