In answer to the thread title, the one major thing Tressel's Bucks do is understand the tradition of being a Buckeye. I don't mean this with disrespect to those who played for Cooper, but Cooper never understood the tradition. Chucking it into the end zone after Taliferro was injured, hawking just about any product on TV, completely out of touch with his players and the traditions of being a Buckeye--in my mind, his inability to relate to what it meant to be a Buckeye deprived him of his greatest weapon in the biggest games he coached, the ability to draw on the ghosts of those who went before.
Woody was a great history buff. He understood that legacy is important. That everyone who ever donned the Scarlet and Gray was important. That former players, coaches, and fans did something valuable. Nicklaus understood it too (e.g., The Memorial).
Tressel understands the importance of linking past and present. Did you see those magnificent linebackers in staying in that game yesterday? Did you see Hawk eager to close a TV interview so he could get into the end of game session with the team? That's what Tressel's understanding of Buckeye tradition has given this team and that's why they are going to beat the school up north this week.
It's about tradition, stewardship, and legacy. Somewhere, Woody took great pleasure in watching that running attack yesterday. And one day, he and Tressel are going to have one hell of a good laugh about what this team does to TSUN next week.

Thump - your question was what ONE thing does Tressel do better than Cooper ..
I'll nominate 2 very important things he does better.
A - Win the Big Games, vs UM (THE GAME) in Bowl Games.
B - Graduate his Scholar Athletes (Coop's squads were spiralling downhill in this metric - since JT came on board Academic Big 10 honors are a frequent subject of Press Releases).
Those are two huge winning areas for this program.
The first helps in getting the attention of OOS recruits. Everyone loves a winner, right?
The second helps with the parents of all the in-state and OOS prospects. It also provides another good reason for us to be proud of the Buckeyes. Finally, if their academic standing holds, or even improves in time, it should help ensure the long-term health of the Buckeyes when APR kicks into play.

To recognize the difference between the Tressel and Coop eras, all you need to do is "feel" the mood on this board as we head into The Game. There is a confidence that we will be prepared on Saturday. We will fight and compete for four quarters, we will make adjustments when necessary, and we will fight back from adverse situations should they arise. I did not have that confidence in Coop's final years. Tressel knows what he was hired to do. Beat Michigan and life is good.

Cooper just never "got it" about Michigan...Remember the tie and he called it the greatest victory!
