One major thing Tressel's Bucks do better than Cooper's did...

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • ......Tackle.

Remember how many missed tackles we used to have in the Cooper days?

Seems like anymore once one of our guys gets a hold of the offensive player, he's going nowhere.

I remember getting so irate at Cooper when he'd always say, "I'll guarantee you one thing, we're going to work on that in practice this week" and nothing ever got better.

I"d agree with that. Seems the old technique was "Hit them as hard as you can and see if they fall over. DOn't bother using your arms, they'll only get in the way"

that's not to say there wasn't some good tacklers (i.e. Big Kat, Winfield) but in open spaces, I can think of several times the tackle wasn't made, whereas now I can't think of many times that, say, Youboty or Jenkins or Fox misses(d) an open field tackle.. or anyone else.

The biggest diffrence between JT teams and Cooper teams i've noticed is Coopers teams came out of the gate swinging when the season started and come the November and January the team was the same, no better no worse. JT teams seem to get better as the year goes on and hit full stride in November, the last two years more so than any year. Even in 2002, we got better every week to the point we could beat anyone in the country.

Tressel recruits ohio a lot better than coop.

This quote exemplifies the difference in Cooper's approach to scholar athletes
The [graduation] rates would have been higher, he says, if Ohio State hadn't eliminated some classes and raised the standards for majors like sport and leisure studies. "I think a school like Ohio State," Cooper says, " if you let a kid in, there ought to be a curriculum to keep him there."

JT is a Buckeye through and through....and the Ohio and OOS players he and his assistant coaches have recruited and continue to recruit, with only a few obvious exceptions, are consummate TEAM players. Coop and too many of his players spelled TEAM all-too-often with the single vowel "I." :oh: :io:

One thing about the whole "tackling thing" is that our defensive backfield is alot bigger than it ever was in the cooper era. We have cornerbacks who could play safety, and our safeties have been all over the place also.

if you dont believe this is still ture youre crazy...

I think it was obvious from his first year, and that's one of the reasons he got the job. Cooper never really made it a priority to recruit Ohio as much as California and Florida, etc...whether that was because he bought into the whole "Florida speed" myth or not, I don't know.
