If you don't mind me asking, where did you get this helmet? that's sweet you have a real one.
i have been collecting vintage, game-used helmets for the last 6 months to display in a sports lounge i will be adding to my restaurant. i have always been fascinated by football helmets and their rich history so this gave me a perfect opportunity to get my hands on some beauties. it's been an extremely interesting and fun project - i'm not sure which has been more rewarding; actually getting a hold of some classic, rare helmets or the learning process of identifying authentic vintage helmets from reproductions.
anyway, to answer your question, i have picked up helmets from many different sources - ebay, memorabilia auctions, classified ads, lawn sales, to name a few. as far as the osu helmet is concerned, i came across a guy in my local classifieds that was looking to sell 40-50 "game-used" helmets. not expecting much, i asked him to send me photos - well, i couldn't believe what i saw when they arrived - one of the nicest collections i have ever seen! i purchased 20 (now i have about 250!)!
but the osu helmet isn't even the best one in the group. by the way i was mistaken, the osu helmet i have isn't a gladiator helmet it's an all american helmet. riddell purchased the gladiator company in the mid to late '80s, made a few modifications and reintroduced them as "all american" helmets. many college teams wore all american helmets and so did a few pro players (howie long for one). anyway, virtually the entire osu team wore all american helmets in the mid to late '80 as can be seen in this 1986 photo (the white padding that can be seen protruding from the rear of the helmets in the photo has all american printed on it).
it's a great authentic helmet, roughed up with quite a few award decals. but, as much as i like it, i will probably list it on ebay in the next month or so - one thing i have learned in my helmets journey is that there are no greater, ardent or avid memorabilia collectors than michigan and ohio fans! and for good reason considering the tremendous history of these programs!
which brings me to michigan - in the group of helmets i purchased was also a 1970 vintage michigan suspension helmet. this thing is extremely valuable and very rare. hand painted by russ hawkins (he is 72 years old and has been hand painting michigan's helmets for the last 50 years!)
best of luck to you guys and hope you have a trendous season! thanks again for all of the help!
