OL Wyatt Davis (2-Time 1st Team All-American)

FUTURE FIVE-TIME PRO BOWLER? Wyatt Davis is all set to be the next highly-coveted Ohio State interior lineman, joining Billy Price and Pat Elflein. Candidly, I pray his NFL career kicks off better than theirs has.

The good news is, Daniel Jeremiah – one of my go-to NFL Draft Knowers (behind Dan Hope, of course) – doesn't think that'll be an issue. He foresee's a long and strong NFL career.

Biggest takeaway: I've talked to many offensive line coaches over the years and they all covet the traits that Davis possesses: strength, toughness and effort. He's an outstanding finisher. However, as I outlined above, he does have areas where he needs to improve. I've heard some folks compare him to Quenton Nelson. In my opinion, he isn't anywhere near that level of player. He lacks Nelson's quickness, knee-bend and change of direction. However, I do believe Davis will be a solid starter as soon as he steps foot on an NFL field.

He reminds me of: I see similarities to David DeCastro when he was coming out of Stanford in 2012. Both guys excel when they can stay on one track, and they collect plenty of knockdowns in every game. DeCastro had better flexibility, but I think they are comparable athletes. DeCastro has enjoyed a tremendous professional career with the Steelers, earning five straight Pro Bowl nods and two All-Pro selections. Davis has the potential to do the same.

I love the extremely decisive language Mr. Jeremiah uses. He's Wavy Dub "isn't anywhere near" one two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, but then goes on to compare him to a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro.

Hey man, whatever works. As long as I get to see him bully some folks at the next level too, I'm content.

Wyatt Davis – 35%
Wyatt Davis is the best player for Ohio State you’ll never talk about. He’s probably the best player on the team other than Justin Fields and might be the best guard in college football. He’s powerful, has great punch, and otherworldly feet. A pass protection monster, last season, Davis didn’t allow a single sack or hit on 459 pass-blocking snaps. Davis could have declared after last season and likely been a day-two selection.

The only thing working against Davis becoming a first-round pick is his position. Interior linemen aren’t valued as highly as tackles, and guards aren’t valued as highly as centers. That’s changed slightly as NFL teams are placing an emphasis on interior pass-rushers. Still, over the past three years, only two guards have been selected in the first round. The fact Davis even has even this high of a chance is a testament to how special he is.

“I'm right there with Justin,” Davis said. “It doesn't really matter to me when we play them. Obviously, like Josh was saying, the tradition of that game is very important to us. But it doesn't matter. If it's the first game on the season, so be it. We're going to beat the brakes off them.”

TELECONFERENCE BULLETS: OHIO STATE’S SEVEN TEAM CAPTAINS TALK ABOUT LEADERSHIP, PREPARING FOR AN UNPRECEDENTED SEASON, STAYING SAFE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

WYATT DAVIS
  • Davis says he's very optimistic that there will be a season: “You can only take it one day at a time, because it can consume your mind if you get too negative.”
  • Davis says he has talked a lot with his parents and that “they want a season to happen. At the same time, they wanna make sure it’s a safe environment. With workouts about to start up and with camp soon, they feel very good about how Ohio State has been handling things.
  • Davis says that a mask is required to be at the facility and that players are being tested twice a week.
  • On being prepared for training camp, Davis says that when he was back home he always stayed on top of being in good physical shape and always tried to find different places to work out: “I feel like I’m where I’m always at during this time. During the whole pandemic and being in California for that long, I really took it upon myself – especially when no one’s watching – to do all the workouts our coaches were sending us.”

Was really looking forward to watch him play this season. Do not want him taking any chances next spring or whenever

The chances of an injury would be the same this fall or next spring. Unfortunately an injury in the Spring you have (approximately) 6 to 8 months less time to recover before the NFL season begins. In addition, the NFL draft is April 29 - May 1, 2021 and you need to prepare in advance of that for the NFL Combine too.

The CBA allows the commissioner to unilaterally declare the draft to be as late as June 2nd, which I believe he would do if the P5 conferences are playing football in the spring.

But the concern about less time to prepare and/or recover from injuries is still there.

FWIW, I remember seeing this last month:

Report: NFL Not Interested in Delaying 2021 Draft If CFB Season Played in Spring
JULY 2, 2020
Should the COVID-19 pandemic push the upcoming college football season into the spring, the NFL has little interest in delaying the 2021 draft, according to USA Today's Dan Wolken.

The Cleveland Browns are slated to host next year's draft, which will run from April 29 through May 1.

A day after the Associated Press announced its preseason top-25 rankings, including nine teams that won't take part in fall sports in 2020, the AP named its preseason All-American lists. These lists included 23 players that will not play this fall due to conference decisions to cancel football in 2020 because of COVID-19.

Among those 23 are three Ohio State players, offensive lineman Wyatt Davis, cornerback Shaun Wade and quarterback Justin Fields. Davis and Wade were both named AP preseason first-team All-Americans, while Fields was named a second-team preseason All-American.
