Reid Fragel, Bengals rookies ready to prove value

Reid Fragel took time to soak in the moment. This would be a Paul Brown Stadium practice without pads on a dreary morning nearly three months from training camp. Still, strapping on his Bengals helmet for the first time on the opening day of rookie mini-camp Friday struck him with a twinge of jitters.

?Walking through the tunnel and running out there for the first time was pretty surreal,? said Fragel, an offensive lineman selected in the seventh-round. ?The whole experience is just amazing in itself.?

Once any jitters subsided, a different feeling took over for Fragel and dozens of others leaving the blur of agents, combines, physicals and draft days behind.

?I think everybody has a sigh of relief that whole process is over where we are just able to to play football again,? Fragel said. ?Once the ball is snapped I think everybody is equal. It's not, 'Oh, there's that guy, he's first round, second round.?

Cincinnati Bengals Have a Potential Star in Ohio State?s Reid Fragel

COMMENTARY | It's not often you hear a seventh-round pick being heralded as a potential star, but that's exactly what the Cincinnati Bengals may have found with former Ohio State offensive tackle Reid Fragel.

When you think of seventh-round selections, you mostly think of guys who serve as nothing more than training-camp bodies who go on to float around the league in various practice squads and camps before disappearing altogether.

That's not the case with Fragel.

At all.

With the No. 240 overall pick, the Bengals made Fragel their first selection of two picks in the final round of the draft.

Presumably, Fragel fell to the seventh thanks to his inexperience. After all, he spent most of his years playing the tight end position before putting on 20 pounds and moving to offensive tackle at the request of head coach Urban Meyer last season.

Even with a position change, Fragel showed he could be an effective blocker at the Big 10 level. He dropped to the seventh because he is an obvious project who needs to work on his technique before being ready to play at the NFL level.

Fragel couldn't have landed in a better position. He now has the chance to learn from one of the best the NFL has to offer in Bengals left tackle Andrew Whitworth. It will take years for him to develop, but the sky is the limit based on what he has shown so far.

This need for development does not mean Fragel will sit on the practice squad for a year. In fact, it's the exact opposite thanks to his versatility.

When we said Fragel couldn't have landed in a better position, we weren't joking. Cincinnati has been infamous for using unbalanced lines on offense in which an extra offensive lineman comes into the game and is eligible to catch passes out of the backfield.

For the past few seasons that guy has been Dennis Roland.

Reid Fragel went to my high school, and I used to see him around. Now he plays for the Cincinnati Bengals.

He played for OSU for 4 years as first a TE, then a OT.

Feel free to share thoughts about him.

Fragel is still my favorite recruiting visit story...

Indeed. From Our Honor Defend on his recruitment.
A would-be mugger saw Reid, his father and whoever else (I don?t know) and thought that they were prime targets to be victims of a petty crime. Details elude me since I don?t have the gory details that came via (I think) Scout.com?s message boards, but the mugger approached Reid?s dad and made him cough over valuables. Yes, he approached the man with the 6?8 260lb son in the group and robbed him? initially. Rather than accept what just happened, Reid chased down the mugger in order to retrieve what was taken from his father. Better yet, he gave the mugger a thrashing that opened the eyes of the other recruits on the visit. Since the Spring Game is typically populated with recruits who are either strongly considering Ohio State, or have already committed, the other kids there became enamoured with the prospect of what a 6?8 260lb kid who just gave a criminal a beating of a lifetime could accomplish on the field for the Scarlet and Gray. That?ll build camaraderie instantly.

I don?t care what measure you use, but going from 0 to stomping a mudhole in a street criminal, whatever length of time it took, is fast. May every defensive end he encounters on a running play, or linebacker and defensive back that comes to tackle him with the ball in his hands, be the guy that just mugged his father.
