OL Reid Fragel (Official Thread)

Reid Fragel, 6-foot-7, 298 pounds, offensive tackle, senior

Overview: Fragel went to OSU as a tight end but grew out of the position. Fragel spent most of his career as a backup tight end and coach Urban Meyer then convinced him to gain 20 pounds and change positions. Fragel was invited to the Senior Bowl but missed it because of an undisclosed injury, so the combine will be vital for him.

NFLDraftScout.com overall rankings/projections: Fragel is ranked as the 167th top player and the 16th best offensive tackle. He carries a fifth-round grade.

What they're saying: Looks the part with good height and length with the frame to keep adding weight. ... Athletic player with quickness to get to the second level. ... Does a nice job of using angles, squaring his shoulders and mirroring well. ... Has messy footwork and lacks the quickness to consistently hold up on an island. ... Needs a lot of technique work and is often caught up lunging and being off-balance. ... Needs to improve blocking motion and improve his awareness.

NFLDraftScout.com player comparison: Brandon Mosley, offensive tackle, New York Giants.

Grosse Pointe South's Reid Fragel prepped to impress scouts
February 20, 2013
By Mark Snyder
Detroit Free Press Sports Writer

Reid Fragel was ready to shine.

He had a head start on many prospective NFL players because Ohio State's season ended in November, with the Buckeyes ineligible for a bowl game.

He also received an invitation to the Senior Bowl in January, but after suffering an ankle injury, he wasn't able to play.

This week, at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, the 6-foot-8, 315-pound offensive tackle gets to show scouts what they missed.

"I'm very excited, not nervous, just anxious to get out there," Fragel said last week, planning to leave his Arizona training base for Indy on Tuesday. "After not playing in the Senior Bowl, this is kind of a one-shot thing. I'm anxious to showcase my skills."

Fragel:

Physical measurables, athleticism and health will all be under the microscope for Fragel at the combine.

Having converted from tight end to right tackle in his senior season, he is more athletic than most offensive tackles and has the upside to be a starting right tackle in the NFL. Scouts at the combine will be looking for Fragel to prove his athleticism by testing well in his drills on Saturday.

Weigh-ins will also be an important factor for Fragel: standing between 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-8, Fragel has very good height for an offensive tackle, but teams will look for him to weigh in at above 300 pounds. Also important for Fragel will be getting through the medical examination with a clean bill of health: he missed the Senior Bowl due to injury.

Future looks bright for Fragel

Reid Fragel?s one season at Ohio State under Urban Meyer wasn?t an easy one, but now he can see the results of the process.

After fending off a tough challenge from freshman Taylor Decker for the right-tackle job, Fragel developed by season?s end into an NFL prospect.

It?s quite premature more than two months before the NFL draft but project where he might go, but he could be the second Buckeye taken after projected first-rounder Johnathan Hankins.

?I try not to look at that stuff,? Fragel said. ?You hear things here and there. I?m just looking forward to performing well this week, and I think that?ll put me in the higher grouping of linemen.?

Fragel got jump on position change
By Matt Florjancic, Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS -- Unlike several of his Ohio State teammates, offensive lineman Reid Fragel has a year?s jump on making a position change before transitioning to the NFL.

INDIANAPOLIS -- As his former Ohio State teammates, John Simon and Nathan Williams, make the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker before pursuing careers in the NFL, offensive lineman Reid Fragel knows what that experience feels like because he went through that process last year.

Between his junior and senior seasons, Fragel made the move to offensive lineman from a tight end known more for his blocking after catching only 14 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown in his first three seasons.

This weekend, Fragel will work to show his skills at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

?The pass (protection) footwork coming from tight end is a little different,? Fragel said. ?The run game was always natural to me. I was a blocking tight end; I was a lineman at heart, so to speak. That came more naturally to me and the pass pro took a little more time, but I feel more and more comfortable as time goes on. One of my goals every game was to try and get better at pass pro, and I think I did a good job with that.

?It?s something that, at the time, was an added bonus because right away, it?s not something I thought about as, ?Hey, moving to tackle my senior year would immediately throw me into the NFL.? That?s pretty hard to do. Through the process, I was able to grow as a lineman pretty quickly, and lucky enough to be here today and prove my skills this weekend.?

Ohio State football: Meyer forged Fragel into line prospect
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch?Friday February 22, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS ? A year ago, Reid Fragel was a converted backup tight end for Ohio State, competing to win the right tackle job against a freshman.

A chance at playing in the NFL hardly seemed possible. But after a difficult, and ultimately triumphant, senior season, a pro career is within reach.

?A year ago, coach (Urban) Meyer told me I had the potential to be here,? Fragel said at the NFL combine yesterday. ?Sticking to the plan, as grueling as it was and tough as it was, coach Meyer got the best out of me. I?m forever thankful to him and his staff for the job they did.?

It wasn?t until a week before the season opener that Fragel finally beat out Taylor Decker for the starting job. Week by week, he improved significantly, turning Meyer from a skeptic to one of his biggest boosters. NFL scouts say Fragel?s combination of size, athleticism, intelligence and competitiveness make him a prospect with plenty of potential.

More than two months before the draft it?s difficult to project where he might go, but Fragel could be the second Buckeyes player taken after projected first-rounder Johnathan Hankins.

?I try not to look at that stuff,? Fragel said. ?You hear things here and there. I?m just looking forward to performing well this week, and I think that?ll put me in the higher grouping of linemen.?

Fragel prefers to look at his inexperience at tackle as a strength. He plans to work out for scouts this weekend.

?I think after this week?s over they?ll see that I possess a lot of strength and speed,? he said. ?I have a lot of tread left on my tires, where some of these linemen might be worn down a little bit more. I think my best football is ahead of me.?

Ohio State OL Reid Fragel might have gone to Michigan if Lloyd Carr hadn't retired
Kyle Meinke | [email protected]
on February 22, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS -- Reid Fragel liked Michigan. He really liked Lloyd Carr.

Then Carr retired as the Wolverines' coach, and Fragel, from Grosse Pointe South, didn't click with Rich Rodriguez.

So he became a Buckeye.

Fragel committed to then-Ohio State coach Jim Tressel as a tight end, then blossomed into an all-Big Ten right tackle as a senior under Urban Meyer. He beat Michigan three times, and now is ranked by ESPN as the 12th-best tackle prospect for April's draft.

"The coaching change at Michigan kind of helped things I guess," he said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "I liked Coach Carr a lot, but he decided to step down and from then on, that made things a little easier, I guess you could say.

"(My father and I) went down to Ohio State, he asked what I thought and I told him I loved the place. Coach Tressel and his staff were just icing on the cake."

February 22, 2013 Grosse Pointe South's Reid Fragel makes big statement at combine

Indianapolis ? After playing tight end for three seasons at Ohio State, Reid Fragel had to make a conversion to offensive tackle in 2012 to help replace two departed seniors.

And so far, the former Grosse Pointe South standout's transition has gone pretty well.

Fragel weighed in at 308 pounds Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine, nearly 30 pounds more than he weighed during his junior season with the Buckeyes, and he's just a couple months away from becoming a professional offensive lineman.

"I'm honored to be here," said Fragel, who stands 6-foot-7?. "It's something a year ago that coach (Urban) Meyer told me had the potential to be sitting with you here at the combine. It was big sticking to the plan, as grueling as it was, as tough as it was, Coach Meyer got the best out of me."

Fragel grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms and comes from a family filled with athletes. His brother Brett played basketball at Monmouth College (N.J.), another brother Mark played football at Miami (Ohio) and his sister Maggie is currently a rower at Miami (Fla.).

Reid's father, Mark Sr., played football at Michigan State and Northern Michigan, and his grandfather Joe Stalma was a legendary basketball coach, winning 288 games at Rossford High School in Ohio.

It's safe to say sports are in Reid's blood, and during interviews with NFL teams, he listed his family as a reason for his development and said his father was the most influential person in his life.

"I come from a great family and my parents did a great job raising me and teaching me a lot of life lessons, and I'm truly blessed to have them as part of my life," he said.

Reid chose Ohio State over other scholarship offers, including Michigan State, because he "fell in love with the place" and liked coach Jim Tressel and his staff. Although he grew up in Metro Detroit, he was born in Chicago and lived briefly in Toledo, so he never had strong ties to another school.
