Indianapolis ? After playing tight end for three seasons at Ohio State, Reid Fragel had to make a conversion to offensive tackle in 2012 to help replace two departed seniors.
And so far, the former Grosse Pointe South standout's transition has gone pretty well.
Fragel weighed in at 308 pounds Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine, nearly 30 pounds more than he weighed during his junior season with the Buckeyes, and he's just a couple months away from becoming a professional offensive lineman.
"I'm honored to be here," said Fragel, who stands 6-foot-7?. "It's something a year ago that coach (Urban) Meyer told me had the potential to be sitting with you here at the combine. It was big sticking to the plan, as grueling as it was, as tough as it was, Coach Meyer got the best out of me."
Fragel grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms and comes from a family filled with athletes. His brother Brett played basketball at Monmouth College (N.J.), another brother Mark played football at Miami (Ohio) and his sister Maggie is currently a rower at Miami (Fla.).
Reid's father, Mark Sr., played football at Michigan State and Northern Michigan, and his grandfather Joe Stalma was a legendary basketball coach, winning 288 games at Rossford High School in Ohio.
It's safe to say sports are in Reid's blood, and during interviews with NFL teams, he listed his family as a reason for his development and said his father was the most influential person in his life.
"I come from a great family and my parents did a great job raising me and teaching me a lot of life lessons, and I'm truly blessed to have them as part of my life," he said.
Reid chose Ohio State over other scholarship offers, including Michigan State, because he "fell in love with the place" and liked coach Jim Tressel and his staff. Although he grew up in Metro Detroit, he was born in Chicago and lived briefly in Toledo, so he never had strong ties to another school.
