KRISTA JAHNKE
He's destined to be Buckeye
BY KRISTA JAHNKE ? FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ? February 5, 2009
Deborah Fragel knew Wednesday wasn't an ordinary day when she heard the shower running shortly after 6 a.m.
Her son, Reid Fragel, typically doesn't wake up for school until around 7. But to a Division I football recruit joining one of the best classes in the country, the first Wednesday of February -- national signing day -- is no day for beauty sleep.
And so Fragel, a tall, muscular tight end from Grosse Pointe South, was at the school, bright-eyed but jittery, by 7:30.
"He was saying to his dad, 'Are you sure we can park here?' as they pulled in," Deborah Fragel said. "He was a little nervous."
Soon enough, the enormous task of the day -- a culmination of years of hard work and the beginning of a promising future -- was signed, sealed and delivered.
By 7:35, his letter of intent to become a Buckeye at Ohio State was traveling through the fax machine. And within moments, coach Jim Tressel was on the phone.
"He just welcomed me aboard," Fragel said. "He said, 'We're excited to have you.' "
Fragel Becomes Latest Michigan Import
Craig Krenzel and Vernon Gholston were two Michigan products who brought major contributions to the Ohio State football program. The Buckeyes are hoping that the two Michigan players added to this year's class will do the same. One of them, tight end Reid Fragel, recently made it official by sending in his letter of intent.
