OL Michael Brewster (Official Thread)

He didn't have a great senior year for various reasons. Some out of his control. And he may have picked up the stench from the whole NCAA investigation thing whether his fault or not.
Or maybe he just never got the coaching he needed. It will be interesting to see how Mike, Adams and Shug do in the NFL.

"People feel bad for me, but they shouldn't," Brewster said after he wasn't one of the five centers drafted. "My whole life I've had a chip on my shoulder and my record speaks for itself. I find a way to make things work and I'd rather be in Jacksonville in Florida than be a second-round pick somewhere I wouldn't be happy. Time to get to work and help the Jags win more games."

Classic Brewster. Such a great kid. All he sees is the work that needs to be done, never the obstacles that have been laid before him. No matter what happens with his NFL career he'll be successful in life.

He was an OT when he arrived and was quickly moved to Center. Brew is one of the smarter guys around and that was part of the thinking to moving him to Center. He was able to learn from Jimmy Cordle and he did a fantastic job. The fact that he wasn't drafted baffled me and I am more sure about his ability to make it at the next level than most of the other guys around.

Ohio State football: Brewster finds upside ... he?s close to home
Center ignored in draft, signs with Jaguars
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday May 1, 2012
Friends have reached out to Michael Brewster since the NFL draft to offer their condolences.

Expecting to be a mid-round pick, the former Ohio State center went undrafted. As the hours whiled away, so did hopes for a signing bonus that might have set up Brewster for life.

?They?re like, ?Are you all right? I?m sure it?s hard,? ? Brewster said yesterday afternoon.

Brewster is fine, even happy. He signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.Jacksonville is only two hours from his home in Orlando, Fla. ?This was the team I wanted to go to more than the other 31,? Brewster said. ?I?m probably one of the happiest dudes in the draft. Some dudes made a ton of money, but I can?t put a value on how much I love my home state.?

Still, Brewster said he felt ?a little disrespected? that no team valued him enough to draft him.

So what happened? How did a four-year starter at Ohio State and 2010 Rimington Award finalist as the nation?s best center not be among the 253 players drafted?

Part of the issue was his position. Only five centers were taken in the draft. Michigan?s David Molk, the 2011 Rimington winner, went in the seventh round.

?Center is a unique position, kind of like safety,? said former OSU All-America center LeCharles Bentley, who helped Brewster train for the draft. ?Unless you?re the No. 1 or 2 guy, you?re not going to be drafted highly, if at all.?

BINGO ! With all the highly regarded OL recruits we've had the past SEVERAL years, it seems few have panned out in the NFL, where other Big Ten schools such as Wisconsin and Iowa pump out NFL ready O-Lineman year after year.

Hate to say it, and it is just my opinion...I think that maybe we have been winning (thanks to very talented and athletic players) the past few years despite mediocre coaching. :(

All Undrafted players team

Which players have a chance to make an impact despite not being drafted? Dan Pompei

Center?Michael Brewster, Ohio State. He was probably the most surprising player who did not get drafted. Brewster had a solid third round grade and played a position at which only four players were drafted. It would not be surprising to see Brewster become a starter for the Jaguars.

'Smarter, stronger' Mike Brewster starts anew with Jacksonville Jaguars
By Dan Hope

Published: Monday, May 14, 2012

At the conclusion of the 2012 NFL Draft April 28, former Ohio State center Mike Brewster was still waiting on the phone call that could change his life. At the time, his NFL dreams were on hold. All 253 draft selections had come and gone, and he was not among the players selected.

But Brewster did not have to wait much longer for his opportunity to play in the NFL. By the end of that same Saturday night, Brewster signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As an undrafted free agent, Brewster had the opportunity to choose which team he would sign with. He told The Lantern that the Jaguars were the right team for him.

?It was the best situation, as far as they didn?t draft any linemen,? Brewster said. ?Their (offensive line) coaches had been in contact with me probably more than anybody. That made me feel comfortable.?

As a four-year starting center for the Buckeyes, Brewster started 49 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in school history. Brewster?s former coach Luke Fickell has the longest streak at 50 straight games. In 2010, Brewster was named to the Football Writers Association of America All-American Team, and was named first-team all-Big Ten by the media.

Jaguars offensive line coach Andy Heck told The Lantern that the Jaguars were ?fortunate? to be able to sign Brewster as a free agent.

?Every guy we bring in here is a guy that we believe can compete to make our team,? Heck said. ?Mike is a guy that I think has a legitimate shot to make a team, to develop into a solid pro, and he?s going to get that opportunity here to compete, to take his game to another level. If he earns it, he?ll make the team and play.?

Brewster, a native of Orlando, Fla., said returning to his home state was a big factor in his decision to go to Jacksonville.

?I prayed to come home, and it happened in a mysterious way,? Brewster said. ?I?m as happy as I could be. Nobody loves the state of Florida as much as I do.?

The New Guys on The O-Line Impress
Aug 5th, 2012

There has been a lot of talk about the Jaguars offensive line over the past couple seasons and during training camp. With the majority of the offensive line out with injuries or resting (yes, you Brad Meester) the team has been limited to Eben Britton as the sole starter during drills at some times. The lack of veterans has led to new players getting a look during scrimmages and drills. So far, tackle Dan Hoch, center Mike Brewster, and guard D.J. Hall have all impressed.

It has been the speculation of some writers here at B&T that Brewster has a shot at usurping the backup role at center from John Estes. If the report from Jaguars.com that Brewster has been playing well is true then maybe that speculation was good insight into a potential shift in the depth at center.

G injuries taking a toll: Injuries continue to pile up on the Jags' OL. Starting G Will Rackley (ankle) still has an expected 3-4 weeks of recovery time after being injured last week. Now, G Jason Spitz is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with a sprained foot, according to the team's official website.

With two those two out, undrafted rookie free agent Mike Brewster will move to G for the time being. Mularkey also said they will give undrafted rookie DT Drew Nowak a look at G.
