OL Michael Brewster (Official Thread)

Brewster a finalist for Rimington

Center Mike Brewster is one of six finalists for the Rimington Trophy, it was announced today. The trophy is awarded to, you guessed it, the nation's top center.

Brewster, a junior from Orlando, Fla., has been a starter since the fourth game of his freshman year. The winner will be announced on ESPN's college football awards show on Thursday.

Brewster is joined on the list of finalists by:

Colin Baxter, Arizona
Chase Beeler, Stanford
Jake Kirkpatrick, TCU
David Molk, Michigan
Ryan Pugh, Auburn

This is the 11th year for the trophy. Former OSU center LeCharles Bentley won the award in 2001.

Buckeyes? Brewster rewarded with honor

It?s not really for any college football player to say whether he?s deserving of a major award or All-America status.

Take the case of Ohio State center Michael Brewster. This season, the junior was one of six finalists for the Dave Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation?s top center. He didn?t win that award, but days later was named the first-team All-America center by the Football Writers Association of America.

He?s the 11th OSU center to make at least one major All-America team. That means there will be a tree planted in Brewster?s honor in the Buckeye Grove outside the southeast tower of Ohio Stadium.

Brewster thinks he should be the last person to ask on whether he was deserving of the honor. All he can do is a make a statement for his own progress, from being thrust into the starting lineup the fourth game of his freshman season in 2008 to being the hub of a veteran line that helped launch the 18th-most productive offense in the nation (448.8-yard average) this year.

?I feel like I?m playing at a much higher level than any time last year,? Brewster said.

He credited much of his improvement on the tutoring of offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman.

?I?ve got a great coach in coach Bollman. He critiques everything I do, and that?s how it should be,? Brewster said. ?I can really see the improvement from last year as we were watching those games getting ready for this year?s games.

?There is always room for improvement ? believe me, I am never satisfied with where I am. But I think I am doing the right things and getting the right direction to become the player I want to be.?

Ohio State notebook: Brewster considers draft
Junior center hints he's leaning toward returning

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For center Michael Brewster, Ohio State's 31-26 win over Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday might have been his last game with the Buckeyes.

Brewster, a junior All-American, had said that he would wait until after the game to decide whether to leave for the NFL. The deadline to declare for the draft is Jan. 15.

"I'll talk it over with my family and we'll make the best decision we can," Brewster said. "I pretty much know what I want to do right now, but I want to talk it over with my family before I say anything."

Asked which way he was leaning, Brewster gave a hint.

"I know I need to get better, so " he said, indicating another year at Ohio State might serve him well.

He said he had an interesting feeling after the Buckeyes broke an 0-9 streak against Southeastern Conference teams in bowl games.

"Relieved," he said. "It's weird. Sometimes after these bowl games it's really hard to enjoy them because they are really more of a relief than anything. Last year we got all of the Oregon talk all the time and how we were going to get smoked (before winning in the Rose Bowl), and this time we got all the SEC talk and how we were going to get smoked.

"It's really just a relief. It's like the world is lifted off your shoulders."

Kiper has Brewster as the no.1 non-senior center....

Analysis: Most people expected to see Pryor and the Ohio State passing game develop this season, but the offense under Jim Tressel always will be about pounding the football, and Brewster has been a key to that. Ask Michigan. Keep an eye on Molk out of UM. He's been a big part of the improvement in that running game and has decent athleticism.
