It?s not really for any college football player to say whether he?s deserving of a major award or All-America status.
Take the case of Ohio State center Michael Brewster. This season, the junior was one of six finalists for the Dave Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation?s top center. He didn?t win that award, but days later was named the first-team All-America center by the Football Writers Association of America.
He?s the 11th OSU center to make at least one major All-America team. That means there will be a tree planted in Brewster?s honor in the Buckeye Grove outside the southeast tower of Ohio Stadium.
Brewster thinks he should be the last person to ask on whether he was deserving of the honor. All he can do is a make a statement for his own progress, from being thrust into the starting lineup the fourth game of his freshman season in 2008 to being the hub of a veteran line that helped launch the 18th-most productive offense in the nation (448.8-yard average) this year.
?I feel like I?m playing at a much higher level than any time last year,? Brewster said.
He credited much of his improvement on the tutoring of offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman.
?I?ve got a great coach in coach Bollman. He critiques everything I do, and that?s how it should be,? Brewster said. ?I can really see the improvement from last year as we were watching those games getting ready for this year?s games.
?There is always room for improvement ? believe me, I am never satisfied with where I am. But I think I am doing the right things and getting the right direction to become the player I want to be.?
