OL Luke Wypler (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

Now signed and already finished with his first semester, Wypler is excited to be a part of the Ohio State program. He loves the football. He loves the culture. And he’s a smart guy who was drawn to the Fisher College of Business on campus in Columbus.

When he committed in July 2018, he was locked in. And although the Buckeyes went through a scandal, a head-coaching change and more, Wypler stayed in the class and never second-guessed his commitment. Now that he’s on campus and on board, he’s ready to work.

“Luke is another guy who was bought in from the beginning,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said in December. “He never wavered at all. I think he’s got a chance to be a great interior lineman. You talk about somebody who really takes a lot of pride in the way he goes about his business, he’s going to come in here, going to be detailed, he’s going to work hard.

“He comes from a great program, and I think he has got a great ceiling.”

The wide-open depth chart could play into his favor. And his work ethic is allowing him to take full advantage of the situation.

“That’s what I love — that kid stayed here the entire time,” Studrawa said. “Most guys went home for two weeks, saw their families. That’s fine. But this kid is in here doing that every single day. That’s how important it is to him. I sat in here and watched drills of him every day. We watched film on Zoom and things like that. A guy that cares that much, is that dedicated and has the tools — he’s got quickness, he’s really good now at snapping the ball and stepping. He’s got a rhythm now with the ability to do those things. And he studies the game. He knows every position. He knows all those things, and the time and effort he puts into it is something I love.

“A guy that works that hard, you’re going to be successful, period.”

Wypler has earned reps as the starting center through the spring, a clear sign that he’s taking the right steps in his development. He will leave the spring sessions with recent experience and a budding case to be the starting center in September.

“For me, I think it’s just really getting comfortable in the offense and getting my strength and athleticism in the weight room,” Wypler said. “Coach Mick and his staff, this offseason, I really bought into the strength program. Last year, obviously we had the full winter but then we got cut short, sent home for coronavirus.

“This year, having a full spring and being able to develop properly and getting stronger, faster quicker — that really helped me this spring.”

Wypler is going to be important to our OL this year and probably the future at center. It's just going to be interesting to see if we can truly get the best 5 on the field at OL. Miller is a stud inside but I worry about his snaps. M Jones is about the same, insanely talented but can be get the snaps on target? I would think that with practice any of these guys could get the snaps right, but I just get the sense that Wypler is the most natural center on the roster. In any event, glad to see he's coming along.

Wypler shows how insane the IOL depth is for OSU. Miller and Jones are both incumbent starters, and it says a lot that Wypler is right there with them. Not to mention that PJJ is starting at one OG spot, and Dawand Jones can be used at OT AND OG.

For sure. I was disappointed that Wray is transferring but hey, I get it. This is the best OL depth I've seen here in my time following OSU. I tend to think Wypler doesn't start, but he'll be very important down the road and probably this year if anyone on the interior goes down.

Current Situation
Considered the center of the future at Ohio State, Luke Wypler might end up being the center of the present. The Buckeyes have two open spots on the offensive line — one at left guard and the other at center. Wypler could factor in at either spot, which can also be said for juniors Harry Miller and Matthew Jones. With Miller out this past spring, Wypler and Jones competed to be the No. 1 center. Jones had the job for the first half of spring, but then Wypler ended up closing with it. Was that by design or did Wypler simply take the job? And does it matter, if the starting center was always going to be Harry Miller this year?

What’s the Ceiling This Year?
The ceiling this year for Luke Wypler is a starting job, but it may have to be at left guard if Harry Miller is at center. Wypler spent his spring mostly at center, so he may be a bit behind Matthew Jones in a competition to win the left guard spot. Jones has been at guard the past three seasons, so he’s learned most of the tricks of the trade. If Wypler can prove to offensive line coach Greg Studrawa that he is one of the top five linemen on the team, however, the Buckeyes will find the right spot for him. And with the versatility of Miller and Wypler, there are a couple of possibilities.

Luke Wypler made the evening news in Columbus tonight:

The Football Fever: Luke Wypler's entrepreneurial spirit inspired by Michigan troll

Hand it to Buckeye offensive lineman Luke Wypler who took a shot from a Michigan troll on social media and turned it into cash in his bank account. James Yoder said no one would buy a Luke Wypler hoodie priced at $50. Wypler was inspired by Buckeye fans who said Wypler should put the quote on the hoodie and see how many would sell. Wypler sold his 100th hoodie Tuesday and has 5,000 dollars in sales, a significant percentage he has pocketed as his own. "It was all organic and Luke rolled with the punches and done really well," said Yoder. "You have to give it to Ohio State fans to buy that many five thousand dollars in 24 hours and I hope Luke sells twenty or fifty thousand."Wypler acknowledged a Michigan man helped his bottom line. "Just another win."

FWIW, they said that Yoder actually bought one too.....

Yoder really whiffed picking on a kid that could conceivably start at center for Ohio State as a soph. Three years at G/C for Ohio State puts you in line for a Rimington and legend status alongside Bentley and Mangold.

Those hoodies gonna have a 15 year shelf life.

Not in this social media climate. Yoder probably gained a few thousand new followers for knocking a Buckeye. His comments, and even his buying of the jersey is most likely being used as a marketing tool on his site and channel
