Sunday Special: Barton makes smart decision

It came as no real big surprise when Kirk Barton was released by Denver last week. Barton?s practice repetitions were limited. His time in preseason games was laughable.
Why did Denver sign him in the first place?
Good question.
But NFL teams see something in Barton, a Perry High School graduate. None of them, however, ever saw enough to take a real chance on him. Over the last two years, Barton has been through nine transactions. His best chance to stick was in Detroit. Alas, the Lions cut him ... twice.
Last week when Denver released him, the Carolina Panthers were there within 24 hours to claim Barton. Carolina?s offensive line has been hit with injuries and has underperformed in the offseason.
But Barton didn?t report.
He didn?t want to talk much about his future, other than to say he is contemplating retirement.
?I?m 90 percent sure I?m done,? Barton said.
Why wouldn?t he report to Carolina? Why not continue to chase this dream? Barton is 25 years old. He?s married and has a beautiful wife and home in Columbus. He hasn?t seen much of either the last two years as he lived out of a hotel most of this year alone.
Think about his odds of making it in Carolina. He would have had one quarter of one preseason game and four days in practice to convince the coaching staff to keep him around.
That?s not a lot of time to convince men who had 95 percent of their roster made up a month ago, even if the ink was dried on paper then. Realistically, Barton would have been in the same position he?s in now in 10 days.
?Right now, I?m enrolling in graduate school,? Barton said. ?The program I want doesn?t start until the summer, though. It?s a master?s in education in one year.?
Tough decision, indeed. Barton is a heady player who will do well in grad school. Don?t be surprised to see him coaching in the future if, indeed, his playing days are done.
?I can tell you I?m a lot happier now than I was a week ago,? Barton said.
