OSU
Justin Boren - He's back

* Biggest news was that Justin Boren, off his knee injury, was back at practice working with the first-team offensive line at left guard, though the team was only in shorts and shoulder pads.

Exhale....Boren is back

The final open practice of preseason is over, and the big news is that left guard Justin Boren was back to full-go today, working in all the team drills.

Now, it was not a full-pad practice, it was "shells" -- helmets, shoulder pads and shorts -- but he was held out of those drills on Monday, so now we have definitive progress.

Boren Brings the Nasty but not the Answer
By Brandon Castel

It really is funny how things work out sometimes.

When Justin Boren announced his decision to transfer from Michigan to archrival Ohio State last spring, he was never expected to be the savior of anything. A Pickerington native who originally spurned the hometown Buckeyes to follow in his father?s footsteps up North, Boren was stepping into a situation where his new team was returning four starters on the offensive line to go with a new crop of stud prospects labeled ?Block O.?

After sitting out his first season back in Columbus, Boren is being counted on to not only step in at left guard ? where he earned honorable mention all-Big Ten honors for the Wolverines in 2007 ? but also bring a new attitude to the Ohio State offensive line after a number of lackluster years for the Buckeyes in the trenches.

Justin Boren

?He?s brought a lot,? sophomore J.B. Shugarts said. ?Off the field, he?s a great guy. He?s a nice guy off the field too, but on the field he?s your ideal offensive lineman. He?s mean, he?s big, he?s fast, he plays hard and he plays through the whistle.

?He is what you want in the Big Ten.?

The term nasty has been thrown around ever since Boren started to give the first team defense fits during his time on the scout team last season, but the 6-foot-3, 315-pound junior says he is only doing what comes naturally.

?I don?t think it?s nasty, I just try to drive the guy I?m blocking as far down the field as I can and put him on his back,? Boren said. ?I think a lot of guys on the offensive line this year have that mentality. That?s just the way I?ve played since I was a little kid. My dad taught me that at a real young age.?

Just getting excited about the upcoming season, reading thru a few player threads and thought this was a great quote to re-post.....especially since it was made almost 4-1/2 years ago!

On the Ohio State football Web site, this is the visage of ... well, not exactly a happy guy. But Justin Boren says it's not a big deal. "I just don't smile that much."

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Justin Boren can smile. And laugh. When he scowls, like in the Ohio State team headshot in which he appears ready to pummel his own tie, it's not on purpose."I don't try to look mean," Boren, the Buckeyes' starting left guard, said. "I just don't smile that much."

Justin Boren can joke. And relax. When he gets angry, as he did when his younger brother starting "running his mouth" while they were watching the Super Bowl in February, he has good reason for it.

Jacoby Boren is the 6-2, 255-pound youngest brother in the Boren family and a sophomore at Pickerington Central High School. Justin is the 6-3, 315-pound oldest brother and an Ohio State junior.

"He said some off-the-wall stuff, and we got into it a little bit, and I threw him off the couch," Justin Boren said. "My mom started flipping out."

So yeah, he can be nasty.

"I wouldn't ever mess with him," said 6-3, 255-pound Zach, the middle Boren brother and an OSU freshman fullback. "He's nasty on the field, but at home he's a little more relaxed. But if he's having a bad day, it's not very pretty at home."

Justin Boren can rage. And build a reputation based on quarterback Terrelle Pryor's spring description of him as nasty. But if he doesn't block anybody, it doesn't matter.

"You could be mean, or as nice as you want to be. It comes down to performing," OSU senior right tackle Jim Cordle said. "He just plays hard. And when he's that big, it comes off as nasty."

"Everybody talks about his attitude and his toughness," said OSU offensive line coach Jim Bollman, "but I notice Justin because he's a very strong, powerful, quick guy. Some people think that just because you're aggressive and tough, you're a good player. Well, you'd better be pretty good physically, too. He has a combination of all those things."

JUSTIN BOREN
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OHIO STATE

It has been more than a year since Justin Boren got to line up and play against an opponent in a college football game. The drought for the transfer from Michigan should end today when he's expected to start his first game at left guard for Ohio State.

Though the junior wasn't available for interviews this week, his teammates could sense his eagerness.

"He's a bear to go against in practice, and he's one of the best at it," defensive tackle Todd Denlinger said. "He's looking forward to going out there in Ohio Stadium and kind of proving himself."

Down and out? OR a chance he still plays?
Didn't specify. At the end of the call-in show he just stated that Justin Boren, Ballard, and Miller had all missed practice time, and Miller was confirmed out for the Wisconsin game. Did not confirm absence of Ballard or Boren yet.

As is the case with "flu like symptoms," it's not always a question of whether a person can play through it, rather it's if they can be out on a field in front of 105,000 people and not have something really, really embarrassing happen.
