OL Jack Mewhort (All-American)

I like it. It's clear that UM is not making distinctions between starters and bench warmers when it comes to handing out discipline.

Had they taken the ticket for peeing in public, they would have kept their scholarships and none of this would have happened.
Well, Urban is only taking scholarship away only for the summer. I don't that's going to be a significant financial hardship on him even though it shows some disciplinary action.

Exxxxxxactly. Their punishment has nothing to do with peeing in public. It had everything to do with running from the cops, which UFM and this university won't tolerate.

And enough with the excuses, bitching, and whining in Stoneburner and Mewhort's threads, everyone. If you want to get your fill of that, go over to the Ped State boards. They're freakin' pros at that over there.

Mewhort supported by family, friends

COLUMBUS — Jack Mewhort committed to Ohio State within a week of receiving a scholarship offer after his junior season at St. John's Jesuit, then dove into summer school so he could enroll at OSU two quarters early.

"The only thing that Jack ever wanted to do was play football at Ohio State," said his father, Don.

Now, as Mewhort serves a temporary suspension connected to his misdemeanor arrest earlier this month, that resolve has only strengthened.

"It's like the old saying, ‘You never know how much you miss something until it's taken away from you,'" Don Mewhort said. "That applies here for Jack."

Mewhort, a junior left tackle, and Jake Stoneburner, a senior tight end, are back working out at the Buckeyes' facilities and on pace to be reinstated later this summer after pleading guilty Friday to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct.

Coach Urban Meyer said the players are off scholarship and barred from team activities through the end of the summer session. He expects Mewhort and Stoneburner to return to the team "in good standing" weeks before the Buckeyes' season-opener against Miami University.

Long term, the pair's arrest in Shawnee Hills, Ohio, for momentarily dashing off after police allegedly spotted them and a third man urinating on the side of a building will likely have little impact.

For two players who live for OSU football, their time in the crosshairs for an off-the-field story was devastating. Mewhort and Stoneburner are widely regarded as two of the Buckeyes' foremost leaders, and by all accounts, both take the role seriously.

If OSU supporters widely viewed the June 2 incident as trivial, it was not treated as such by the players.

Mewhort asked his father, "Are the fans going to hate me?" He felt he let down his teammates, coaches, and family, including his great-grandmother.

"She's a pretty tough lady," Don Mewhort said. "Everybody think it's no big deal, but when your 97-year-old great-grandmother wants to know what's going on, it's tough."

"I don't think anybody felt worse than Jack," St. John's coach Doug Pearson said. "He just felt terrible

Urban Meyer said he has suspended players for misdeeds before, but usually with no public announcement. Such was not the case late last week with Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort.

?But I thought whenever you embarrass the team in public like they did, then I?m going to let the public know what we did,? the Ohio State coach said yesterday.

Stoneburner, a senior tight end, and Mewhort, a junior offensive tackle, were arrested early on June 2 by Shawnee Hills police for obstruction of official business and, in the case of Stoneburner, public urination.

?I was crushed,? Meyer said of his first reaction upon hearing the news involving two upperclassmen expected to be leaders on his first OSU team. ?Then when I learned more about what happened, and the fact I know the kids, and that it?s the first time anything has ever been said negative about them, and that they get great grades and are war horses ? but mistakes were made, and that was a stupid mistake.?

Stoneburner and Mewhort pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, according to court records ? including court costs, each had to pay $299 ? but their sentence with Meyer has just begin. Each was removed from scholarship for the summer, and they had most of their privileges of being an OSU player suspended until they satisfy Meyer?s reinstatement program.

?It?s between us, but it?s a series of about a dozen things that need to be done, and I have all the confidence in the world they will get them done,? Meyer said. ?They are on strict probation, and there are curfews and a variety of other things they must adhere to, and if they slip up, they are going to miss playing time.?

I found it interesting that Jack was worried about the fans hating him. Speaking at least for myself, there is zero hate toward Stoney and Jack. It was disappointing, but I'm hopeful they'll work hard to get reinstated, and I'm excited to see them play this Fall!

Stoneburner, Mewhort not reinstated... yet

By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

CHICAGO -- Official reinstatement hasn?t yet been granted for tight end Jake Stoneburner and left tackle Jack Mewhort.

But at this point, it appears to be merely a matter of days for the Ohio State veterans.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer initially suspended them both indefinitely for their offseason arrests in June before stripping them of their scholarships, making them work out separately from the team and also placing stipulations they had to meet before receiving full clearance to rejoin the program. Both Stoneburner and Mewhort are apparently on track to return, though Meyer won?t be marking it down as a done deal until next week.

?I anticipate it,? Meyer said during an interview session at Big Ten media days on Thursday. ?But it?s obviously eight days away.

?If they continue, if they fulfill their community service and a variety of things I?m not going to list [they will be cleared]. There are a variety of things they?ve done and they have to continue to do that. If it continues as is, they will report next Friday.?

WELCOME BACK: Left tackle Jack Mewhort, a St. John's Jesuit graduate, and tight end Jake Stoneburner rejoined the team for Friday's practice, a team spokesman confirmed.

The two starters were suspended from team activities and taken off scholarship for the summer academic session after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in June.

"At first it was hard, especially for Jack," senior fullback Zach Boren said. "Jack is an amazing football player and an amazing leader. So is Jake; he has a lot of pull around the program. But coach Meyer and coach [Marotti] were really good about it. They paid their dues for a while. But then they started bringing them back a little bit, and had them working out with the freshmen.

"They were still staying away from us a little bit, which hurt them, but they were able to lead the younger guys. ... By putting them with the [freshmen], it made them be able to lead again and made them get a sense a pride about themselves."

COLUMBUS -- Jack Mewhort had everything going for him by the end of spring, regarded as one of the Ohio State football team's bedrock leaders and an anchor of the offensive line at left tackle.

Nothing has changed.

If anything, the former St. John's Jesuit graduate gained respect from his response to an off-the-field detour.

Mewhort and senior receiver Jake Stoneburner were taken off scholarship for the summer academic session after pleading guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in June.

New coach Urban Meyer recently called the incident a "stupid" mistake and teammates widely considered it trivial. Police in Shawnee Hills, Ohio, charged the pair for momentarily dashing off after they allegedly spotted the players and a third man urinating on the side of a building.

Mewhort, however, returned for the start of fall camp this month with an added resolve.

The fourth-year junior led OSU onto the field for the team's first open practice earlier this month, and it appears he has rarely stopped since. Junior center Corey Linsley said Mewhort "worked his butt off this camp."

"Jack took that to heart," junior center Corey Linsley said Monday. "All of us looked at it like he made a mistake, no big deal. We all forgave him. He paid his dues in the weight room. But Jack felt like there was an added chip on his shoulder."

On Twitter, Ohio State Buckeyes' Jack Mewhort calls his own plays

Buckeyes offensive lineman Jack Mewhort (74) has shown a unique and quirky side with his Twitter observations about life. He has nearly 2,000 followers even though he is not one of the Buckeyes' marquee players. (Photo by Neal C. Lauron, Columbus Dispatch)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Left tackle Jack Mewhort and quarterback Braxton Miller shared a moment of growth over the weekend, one that Mewhort shouldn't soon forget.

On the team bus to the airport last Friday for Ohio State's flight to East Lansing, Mewhort leaned over the seat and told Miller, ?Hey Braxton, why don't you give your boy a shoutout??

Minutes later, the following tweet appeared from @BraxtonMiller5: ?Follow my left tackle @jackmewhort ..!?

Miller's message went to his more than 44,000 followers on the social media website Twitter. That helped Mewhort increase his followers from about 1,500 to almost 2,000 and exposed that many more people to observations like:

?It's depressing that nobody will ever have a real photo of a dinosaur? - @jackmewhort, Oct. 1

Mewhort and his fellow offensive linemen then went out and helped lead the Buckeyes to a team-building 17-16 win over the Spartans, with the line playing so well that the entire unit was named as Ohio State's offensive player of the game.

More importantly, Mewhort's status as the most consistent offensive lineman for a 5-0 team ranked No. 12 in the country heading into Saturday's primetime matchup with Nebraska may help spread news like:

?Every time I look in my fridge/cabinet I always go over in my head how I would ration the remaining food if the zombie apocalypse happened? @jackmewhort, Aug. 28

Tackle
Jack Mewhort, Ohio State

After losing his scholarship this summer because of an offseason arrest, Mewhort has regained new Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer's trust and emerged as Ohio State's most consistent lineman. Mewhort, a junior from Toledo, Ohio, leads an OSU offensive line that paved the way for 724 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns the past two games. Undefeated Ohio State is averaging 263.6 rushing yards and has scored 23 rushing touchdowns.
