OL J.B. Shugarts (official thread)

For all the folks who got their little knickers in a knot and assumed these two kids were guilty: shame on you! These guys did nothing except run a stop sign and have a tobacco pipe in their car. They and the pipe had no trace of drugs.

Let's see the press publicize the outcome, like they did the arrest.
maybe im alone but how many people use devices to smoke tobacoo these days? or is it a case of just not getting around to use it?

Yeah something like if you get caught under the influence or in possession you can't receive federal aid.

I don't know the exact details, but its keeping some of my friends from getting federal aid.

i wonder if in the future we might see something like that pop up in college sports? and/or acadmeic scholies?

federal aid is NOT an athletic scholarship. None of this will effect thier scholarships.

They tested clean the day after they were stopped, so it seems safe to assume that neither one had used an illegal substance for at least several weeks prior to the arrest.

The use of pipes for tobacco only seems to be a growing trend on college campuses. As for your second question, that would seem to evoke pure speculation about illegal behavior; a topic that doesn't belong in a player's thread on BP.

I have two pipes myself, and i have 2 friends that have hookahs, and weed is never smoked in any of them.. and i know more friends like that. I cant say the items are used more for legal than for illegal, becasue i do not know how many illegals are using it for such purposes. I do know that LOTS of people use them completely legally.

Bollman out-takes

On whether sophomore lineman J.B. Shugarts was falling way behind by sitting out spring practice while recovering from shoulder surgery:

"Naturally, you'd like for him to be able to practice, but a big big setback? No," Bollman said. "Mike Brewster didn?t practice last spring, either (but started 10 games at center). So I think it?s a bigger deal, naturally, when they have to spend some downtime in the season."

Bollman mentioned the fact that Shugarts had a good, solid month of bowl practice, which is important for young players. I expect Shugarts to compete hard at both tackle spots once fall camp begins.

i think bollman makes a good point though, he's been here a year now, he got some good experience with the team during the bowl season, and also it's not like people are expecting guys like berry to not compete for a spot in the two deep just because they don't arrive till summer. JB will be fine as soon as he is able to start practicing with the team, and i wouldn't be surprised if he were a full time starter after 3 or 4 games
