OL Devontae Armstrong (National Champion, transfer to ???)

BETTER KNOW A BUCKEYE: DEVONTAE ARMSTRONG HAS THE PHYSICAL MAKEUP AND EXPERIENCE TO DEVELOP INTO A HIGH-LEVEL GUARD FOR OHIO STATE

IMMEDIATE IMPACT

While Armstrong gained plenty of high-level experience as a three-year starter at St. Ed's, he will need some time to develop on the field and in Ohio State's strength and conditioning program early on as a Buckeye.

If he can acclimate to the speed of the college game quickly, he can provide solid depth on the Buckeyes’ interior offensive line early on. Given his work ethic and track record of success at St. Edward, there’s reason to believe he’ll be able to get himself ready to play quickly even if he ends up redshirting as a freshman.

Frye told Armstrong as a recruit that he thinks Devontae could play both guard and tackle but that he saw Armstrong primarily as an interior offensive linemen. Armstrong spent the spring practicing mostly at left guard, where he’s likely to be the third-team LG this season behind Donovan Jackson and Austin Siereveld.

LONG-TERM IMPACT

Like fellow freshman guard Gabe VanSickle, Armstrong's first shot at earning a spot on the two-deep will likely be in 2025. While Donovan Jackson is entering his final season as a Buckeye, Armstrong will have to compete with Siereveld, Luke Montgomery, Tegra Tshabola, VanSickle and any other guards Ohio State brings in for a spot on the two-deep in 2025.

One thing Armstrong has going for him is his experience starting each of the last three seasons for one of the top high school programs in the country. While his development at Ohio State will be key to earning a starting role, that experience could give him a leg up over other underclassmen toward earning early playing time.

This one actually hurts me more than most…

This is the type of situation where you expected the id to wait and develop because you took a chance on him.

It backfired and the time spent on him isn’t necessarily a “waste” but it makes the program wonder if they need to bring in developmental offensive lineman. The brothers were all “OSU”….now, they’re both gone most likely.

Things are shifting underneath OSU’s feet right now a bit…..the culture is still strong but I think there’s a lingering stigma over the season and how “non-starters” can expect to showcase their talents and expect to maximize NIL opportunity.

As bad as the offensive line played, everyone should’ve got a shot. Hell, Diebler plays the whole damn team in basketball. Brothers always play good together and generally pick each other up. Now, we probably lose both. This team is starting to have very little depth at a position that already underwhelms a lot!

Thanks for the chicken little take.

In the meantime, these guys have both been in the system for 3 years now and are no closer to playing now than they were in 2023. Sometimes guys just need a new start to develop and play - they weren't going to get that here. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

No offense, but this is a bad take. The twins were developmental projects from the start and everyone knew that. They played in a system that used their size, but they didnt have good technique comparable to their competition on the team. You dont just play guys to play guys when you only have 12 regular season games, especially if it's been shown that theyre struggling to get down technique and plays and speed of the game. Both were being passed up and next year they would more than likely be passed up even more.
Best of luck to where they land. But I can see a drop down in levels for them if they want to actually play
