OL Connor Smith (official thread)

Shouldn't it be; "the best guy plays"?

That's sort of my point. Conner was as highly-heralded as any of the Block O Three, and yet hasn't played much. Hopefully he'll reach the level we expected of him when he first came on board...

I would assume he'll be a key back up on the interior line this season.. and probably a frontrunner for one of the open guard spots in 2009..

That being said, i think our two weakenst linemen last season were Rehring and Person.. so i hope Connor has a fair shot at both their guard positions this yr

Parent Q & A: Marcy Smith

Humble and proud, Marcy Smith explains the ins and outs of her two sons, Connor and Spencer Smith. Only a year apart in school, these brothers are men of the outdoors, as one would except from suburban Cincinnati natives. With three years of dance classes under their belt, these brothers are poised and graceful, as well as strong and explosive. Blessed with the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities for the entire Buckeye Nation to see, these brothers encompass the tradition, people, and excellence necessary to succeed as a collegiate football player at The Ohio State University.

Q: What year did your sons start playing football?
A: Both boys started in the 7th grade at the middle school.

Q: When were you first aware that your sons had the potential talent to play at the collegiate level?
A: During their sophomore [high school] football season.

Q: Did they always dream of playing at OSU?
A: YES.

I absolutely love this. Connor hasn't seen much of the field on OL and we're short on numbers at DT. The remaining OL need big bodies to practice against, and Connor certainly provides that. Even if he only serves on the scout team, in my opinion he will serve the team better there than at OG.

And who know, he may very well blossum at the new position.

Meet a Buckeye: Connor Smith

Though Connor Smith has never become a starter in his five seasons at Ohio State, that doesn't mean his college career has been a bust. The senior from Cincinnati Colerain is a backup offensive lineman and special teams performer who is on track to graduate and move on with his life. Though his father Joe Smith was a four-year letter-winning offensive lineman at OSU from 1979-82, when Connor headed off to follow in his footsteps, nothing was promised just because of the legacy. Which is where we pick up with this recent question and answer session:

Q: What was the best advice from your father before he sent you packing to Ohio State?

A: Just to be myself, and compete, work hard, and try to get on the field.

Q: To date, has it been a frustrating college career or has it been fulfilling in other ways?

A: Sure it's been a little frustrating, but I can't live my life thinking about what didn't happen or what might have been. I'm always looking forward, as in how can I get better, how can I move, and what's going to happen in the next stage of my life.

Q: What is the next stage?

A: Graduate this coming winter quarter, hopefully do some insurance and financial planning, start my own business, make sure I make use of everything Ohio State has given me.
