OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reports the 49ers recently signed reserve OT Alex Boone to a four-year contract extension with a $1.7 million signing bonus.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2009 after alcohol and conditioning issues killed his draft stock, Boone has played in all 12 games this season after appearing in just one between 2009 and 2010. He should remain a reserve for the near future.

If Staley is unable to go, Alex Boone will get the start on Sunday Monday at left tackle. Boone has made several relief appearances in his career and is used as an extra blocker when everybody is healthy, but this would be his first career start. While he did not start against Arizona last week, he got a lot of work in when Staley went down with his concussion. Tre9er put together a detailed breakdown of Boone's work last week.

Boone was considered extremely talented coming out of college, but he had an alcohol problem that turned him into an undrafted free agent. Thankfully he has straightened out his life and worked his way up from the bottom of the barrel to a recent four-year extension. Ideally, the 49ers will get everybody healthy and back on the field soon, but if Boone does get the start, it will be interesting to see how he handles the Steelers pass rush. Maybe a strong performance alters the team's offensive line plans moving into the offseason. Starting jobs in the NFL can change in a second, so we'll see what a potential start does for Boone.

Boone shapes up as solid keeper for Niners
By Dan Arkush

While deemed quite worthy of a recent contract extension through 2015, OL Alex Boone is not considered a core player by any means. "But he's a definite keeper," one team insider said of the 6-8, 300-pounder origninally signed as an undrafted free agent in April 2009. "Worse case, he's a very solid swing tackle behind starters Joe Staley and Anthony Davis. Maybe if Davis falters and gets out of shape down the road, there could be an opening for Boone. He's a darned good player who totally redid his body, and he's got some nastiness to him. His biggest challenge is that he's not real quick." Boone more than held his own in Week 14 when he replaced the injured Staley in an ugly loss in Arizona. "He competed. I thought he did a good job," head coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I definitely don't think there's anybody thinking it was a dazzling performance on the offensive side of the ball. But, he did a very good job."

Alex Boone -- After signing a reasonable extension through the 2015 season, Boone figures to be the backup swing tackle for quite a while. Boone entered the NFL as an undisciplined, out-of-shape undrafted rookie. He has transformed his body and his life for the positive. He played nearly the entire game against the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 13 when Staley was out with a concussion, and he played well. He saw most of his action throughout the season as an extra blocker in short-yardage situations.

Boone expected to get chance to compete at guard
April 10, 2012

Jim Harbaugh regularly referred to Boone last season as one of his seven "starting" offensive linemen.

When the 49ers' offseason programs begins Monday, offensive lineman Alex Boone is likely to get a chance to show his versatility.

Boone, who was the 49ers' primary backup at both offensive tackle positions last season, is expected to get a chance to compete for a starting job at guard, according to multiple individuals close to the team.

Coach Jim Harbaugh regularly referred to Boone last season as one of his seven "starting" offensive linemen. Boone spent all of 2009 on the 49ers' practice squad after being an undrafted free agent from Ohio State. He saw action in just one game in 2010.

Boone, who is listed at 6-foot-8, 300 pounds, took over for veteran Barry Sims as the 49ers' backup tackle on both sides last season. He played 172 snaps on offense, including 55 at left tackle on Dec. 11 against the Arizona Cardinals when Joe Staley exited in the first quarter with a concussion. Boone also saw limited action at right tackle and was used regularly as an extra blocker, mostly in short-yardage situations.

LeCharles Bentley, a two-time Pro Bowl lineman whose career was cut short after six seasons due to a knee injury and complications from surgery, has worked closely with Boone for several years at Bentley's O-Line Academy near Cleveland.

"Alex can play guard if it's the best thing for the team, but physically it's not the ideal position for him," Bentley said. "Good guards are easier to find than good tackles. I believe Alex is a very good tackle in the making."

Harbaugh: Boone a candidate to start at right guard

Backup swing tackle Alex Boone could have a new title in 2012: starting right guard.

Asked about what appears to be the lone unsettled starting spot on the 49ers? offense or defense, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned Boone, Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person as possibilities to assume Adam Snyder?s role at right guard.

?We have a number of candidates there,? Harbaugh said. ?Daniel Kilgore. Mike Person. (Alex) Boone. That will be the first order of business. Evaluating those guys, seeing if they can be that guy.?

Boone (6-8, 300) was a left tackle at Ohio State and has played the position since entering the NFL in 2009, spending his first season on San Francisco?s practice squad. The 49ers traded up in the fifth round of last year?s draft to select Kilgore and Person was a seventh-round pick. Both Kilgore, from Appalachian State, and Person, from Montana State, were tackles in college.

Sizing up 49ers' competition at right guard
May 3, 2012

There will be competition for the 49ers' starting spots and playing time at wide receiver.

There might not be competition for the starting halfback job, but there will be a lot of running backs vying for playing time.

Right guard is a spot where, conceivably, any of four players -- as well as a possible veteran addition -- could break training camp as the 49ers' starter.

--Throughout last season, coach Jim Harbaugh often referred to Alex Boone as a player he

considered a starter. Harbaugh said he believed the 49ers had seven starting offensive linemen.

Boone will get his chance to be one of the team's five every-down linemen in 2012.

Harbaugh said the team's best five offensive linemen will start. Then, it becomes a matter of finding the best places for those players. That's why Boone is perhaps the front-runner for the starting job at right guard.

The 49ers were fine letting Adam Snyder get away to sign a five-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals because the team believes a promotion from within will result in an upgrade.

If Boone wins the starting job at right guard, he could still serve as the team's swing tackle. It would be easier for the 49ers to move Boone to one of the tackle positions and bring someone off the sideline to take over at guard than to groom another player to back up at both tackle spots.

--OK, so let's say the 49ers' four returning starters from a year ago will be starters again. (It would be a surprise if that isn't the case.) And let's also say that Boone enters the top five.

49ers move Alex Boone from tackle to guard
Eric Branch
Friday, May 11, 2012

On the first day of the 49ers' offseason program, offensive line coach Mike Solari took Alex Boone into a meeting room and delivered news that blindsided the offensive tackle: He would be moving to guard, a position he'd never played at any level.

The news wasn't only surprising, it was disappointing. At least initially.

"At first I was not for it in my own mind," Boone said. "Now I love it. Anything that can help the team get better I'm all for."

Boone is among those in competition to win the starting spot at right guard, which was occupied by Adam Snyder last year. Snyder signed with the Cardinals in the offseason, prompting the 49ers to look to Boone, 25, who has spent the past two seasons as a backup tackle, the position he played at Ohio State and St. Edward (Ohio) High School.

Boone's competition will include two 2011 draft picks, Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person, along with rookie Joe Looney, San Francisco's fourth-round selection in last month's draft.

Boone's said he's embracing the added violence deep in the trenches.

"It's a full-day street fight," Boone said. "There's somebody that's going to be in your face, and you've got to love it. I'm excited about it."

Boone will have to overcome two obstacles to win the job. At 6-foot-8 and 303 pounds, he's both lighter and taller than a typical guard. Boone hopes to add about 20 pounds while working on his technique. "You're never too tall to play anything, as long as you can sink low enough and you can get leverage on guys," Boone said. "... As long as you can get lower than the guy across from you, you're going to be fine. That's the bottom line."

Reluctant at first, Boone now embracing new position

Alex Boone admits he was skeptical at first. On the first day of the 49ers offseason program, offensive line coach Mike Solari pulled him aside and told him there'd been a change of plans: Boone, an offensive tackle who had never played a snap at guard in his life, would be thrown into the mix at right guard.

Boone called it "a little bit of a shocker. ... At first I wasn't for it in my own head." And now? "I love it."

Boone said the biggest difference between guard and tackle was that at the latter he could often backpedal or slide a few steps before making contact with a defender. At guard, the contact is immediate. "It's a lot more violent in there, so I like it," he said.

Then there's the matter of leverage. Most guards are squatty, stocky guys. Boone is more linear and stands 6-8. But he said he wouldn't let his high profile deter him. "You're never too tall to play anything," he said. "As long as you can sink low enough and get leverage on guys."

So far, the right guard competition has been among Boone and second-year players Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person. With starting center Jonathan Goodwin absent, Kilgore has been playing center and Boone has lined up at right guard. Person has been at right guard with the second team.

Boone said he didn't know how fourth-round pick Joe Looney would be worked in when he arrives. ***Looney said Thursday that he wasn't cleared to practice after suffering a foot injury in January. He said he would sit out the rookie minicamp this weekend.

I guess the one that kind of stands out when you look at the offensive line, you have a vacancy there and you've got a lot of guys competing for that spot, for the right guard spot?

Harbaugh: "Well, really [G/T] Alex Boone had the first shot at that and he's doing a phenomenal job. There will be competition of course, but he's doing outstanding. Another guy that's standing out is [RT] Anthony Davis. Really good with his footwork. That's been much improved. Knowing the system, veteran guy now. Seen a big jump in his play as well."

49ers: Alex Boone makes strides in bid to start at right guard
By Cam Inman [email protected]
Posted: 05/25/2012

When it comes to the 49ers offensive line and the season opener, the most important names will be: B.J. Raji, C.J. Wilson, Ryan Pickett, Jerel Worthy, Clay Matthews, A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop.

Those are among the Green Bay Packers defenders that will be trying to breach the line of scrimmage Sept. 9 in Lambeau Field.

Who will block them? Virtually the same 49ers linemen from a year ago, with one exception: Alex Boone possibly taking over at right guard in place of Adam Snyder (now with the Cardinals) and Chilo Rachal (Bears).

"Alex Boone had the first shot at that and he's doing a phenomenal job," coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday. "There will be competition of course, but he's doing outstanding."

Boone's expected competition will come from second-year lineman Daniel Kilgore, who's also been working as an understudy to center Jonathan Goodwin, as has rookie Jason Slowey.
