Harbaugh confirmed veteran center Jonathan Goodwin has supplanted Adam Snyder atop the 49ers' depth chart and will start Thursday's game.

"I truly believe we have seven starters on our offensive line," Harbaugh said. "We're going to look at combinations and find out what the best one is as we move forward -- in terms of what the best five is. We know what the best seven is."

Left tackle Joe Staley, left guard Mike Iupati, Goodwin, right guard Chilo Rachal and right tackle Anthony Davis are slated to start. Snyder and backup tackle Alex Boone are the 49ers' best seven linemen, Harbaugh said.

The ritual playing of the National Anthem means different things to different people. On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, thoughts and memories will swirl like the winds at Candlestick Park.

Tough guy Alex Boone, a 6-foot-8, 300-pound backup offensive tackle for the 49ers, freely admits he often gets emotional during the song.

"I had a brother who fought in Iraq, so there's a lot that goes through my mind," Boone said. "I'm thankful for all those guys over there, doing what they do. I'm thankful for my brother and thankful he came home alive. I'm thankful to be doing what I'm doing.

"Sometimes I get emotional when a plane flies over. At Ohio State, we used to have the F-16s fly over some times and I'd get teary-eyed. It also depends on how good the singer is, too."

Boone referenced Sydney Shalhoob, an 11-year-old from Santa Barbara. She performed a spectacular rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" prior to the 49ers' exhibition game against the Houston Texans on Aug. 27.

"Unbelievable. Tears in my eyes," Boone said. "In times like that, I'm just thankful to be here. And thankful for all those guys over there."

Alex Boone?s wife is pregnant. She?s right here down the road and Alex was able to go to their appointment yesterday at nine in the morning, and she?s getting pretty close to having that child.

You?ve talked about Alex, that you have seven starting offensive linemen, Alex has only seen time really as a tight end so far?

?As an extra O-lineman, yeah.?

Would you like to work him into the mix a little bit more, get him more snaps than just the base offense?

?It?s always a possibility. How you deploy the guys and where you use them and how you use them, that?s a week-to-week proposition. You know he?s going to be needed at some point, it always happens on the offensive line. You can knock on wood all you want with those kinds of things, but he?ll get his opportunity. He?ll get his chance to contribute.?

With help from a fellow Buckeye, former St. Edward star Alex Boone resurrects his life and NFL career

"People see me as the drunk, the crazy dude who always wants to fight," former Ohio State offensive lineman Alex Boone now admits as he treasures a backup's role with the 49ers. "That was cool when I was 20. But I knew I was running out of chances."

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Seated at a cozy restaurant table with his mother and his mentor, Alex Boone devoured second helpings the way he once went through second chances.

Amy Boone watched with satisfaction as her son and former Pro Bowl offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley helped themselves to another skewer of marinated meats at the downtown Brasa Grill in February.

Alex had played in his first pro game only weeks earlier for the San Francisco 49ers in their 2010 regular-season finale. He had evolved from an undrafted free agent with a history of alcohol-related arrests to a backup left tackle with a future in the NFL.

He owed part of that transformation to the man sitting across the table. His mother cannot recall how many times she had suggested that he reach out to Bentley, who like Boone is a Cleveland native and a former Ohio State Buckeye.

As the two men continued to dine, Amy raised the question again.

"Don't you wish you would have followed my advice years ago?" Amy said to her son. "LeCharles is the voice of reason. Wouldn't it have been nice to have the voice of reason in your head?"

Bentley, 31, turned to Amy and answered the question for Alex.

"The truth is that you have to have the right people in your life at the right time when you really need them," Bentley said. "Alex just wasn't ready to hear the message."

Mark Purdy: 49ers lineman Alex Boone overcomes his demon
By Mark Purdy Mercury News Columnist
Posted: 11/01/2011

Within the larger 49ers story this season that is so unexpectedly giddy, there are many smaller good stories.

Alex Boone is one of them. Although I can't call him small, exactly. Boone is 6-foot-7. He weighs 328 pounds.

And he is playing offensive tackle for the 49ers every Sunday. That's the biggest and most beautiful thing.

"I couldn't be prouder of him," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said the other day.

Two years ago, such an outcome was probably a 50-50 proposition, at best. Two years ago, Boone was an undrafted 49ers rookie free agent who seemed bound for that special oblivion known only to NFL players who have immense potential but wash out of the league because of misguided priorities, motivational deficiencies or personal demons.

In Boone's case, alcohol was the demon. He was an all-conference lineman from Ohio State who, a few weeks before the 2009 NFL draft, was arrested in Southern California for jumping on the hoods of cars and attempting to smash a tow truck window. To subdue him, police tasered Boone twice. All of this followed a DUI arrest in college. His draft prospects -- after his original projection as a third- or fourth-round selection -- totally tanked. The 49ers took a flyer and signed him because of his size and college performance.

That summer at training camp, Boone's story intrigued me. In an interview, I was struck by both his outgoing personality -- his fellow linemen obviously

liked the guy -- and his forthrightness. Boone told me that his plan to stay out of trouble and away from drinking was to basically never leave his hotel room, where he watched DVDs or reruns of the show "House." It seemed a little crazy to me. But he sounded sincere.

"It's what I needed, to be humbled down to this level," Boone said.

Davis' status is also up in the air after spraining his right ankle sprain in the third quarter. He left the game for three snaps, then was on the field for two plays before sitting out the remainder of the game.

Backup tackle Alex Boone played well in Davis' absence. Boone is in line to get his first career start if Davis is unable to play.

"I have tons of confidence in Alex Boone," Harbaugh said.

OT Alex Boone (24)

Boone is an Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) at the end of the season, which means the 49ers can make him an offer at the three-year veteran minimum salary and he either takes it or leaves the NFL. This would increase his salary from $ 405,000 to $ 656,000 per season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh often mentioned that the offensive line consists of seven interchangeable players. Alex Boone is the number seven and should expect to receive an offer.
