Oklahoma State Cowboys (official thread)

North Texas' Eric Morris hired as next coach at Oklahoma State

i

Eric Morris, who has led North Texas to a 10-1 record this season, has been hired as the next coach at Oklahoma State, it was announced Tuesday.

Morris will remain with the Mean Green for the rest of the regular season as well as any potential appearances in the American Conference title game and College Football Playoff.

He will take over an Oklahoma State program in a rut. The Cowboys (1-10) haven't won a Big 12 game over the past two seasons, going 0-17 in conference play during that time, heading into Saturday's season finale against Iowa State.

"Today begins the next era of Oklahoma State football," Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg said in a statement. "... Coach Morris has proven his ability to build and lead winning football programs. He has consistently identified, recruited, and developed some of the best players in college football."

QB Guru: New Oklahoma State Coach Eric Morris Is a Proven Quarterback Identifier, Developer

A look at some of the quarterbacks Morris has scouted and/or developed.

e Cowboys have a new coach, and that coach has proven to be elite at scouting and developing the sport’s most important position: quarterback.

Oklahoma State announced the hiring of North Texas coach Eric Morris on Tuesday. Morris’ North Texas offense currently leads the country in points per game (46.3) and total offense (503.3 yards per game). A lot of that has to do with the passing attack Morris has developed throughout his coaching career, and a lot of it also has to do with his eye for talent at the position.

Here are just a few quarterbacks Morris has coached over the years.

Drew Mestemaker (North Texas)

Morris’ latest quarterback find was a guy who didn’t start a varsity high school game at quarterback and as is now leading the nation in passing as a redshirt freshman.

Drew Mestemaker, listed at 6-foot-4, 211 pounds, played safety and punted in his senior season at Vandegrift High School in Austin.

Morris got a call from Dallas-based quarterback coach Jeff Christensen about Mestemaker. Not long after, Mestemaker was walking on for the Mean Green. He quickly climbed to No. 2 on North Texas’ depth chart before starting the First Responder Bowl against Texas State last season. He threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns while running for another 55 yards and a score in his first start at quarterback since a JV game as a high school freshman.

That performance wasn’t a fluke, as Mestemaker leads the country in passing entering the final week of the regular season with 3,469 yards. His 26 passing TDs are tied for fifth nationally, and his 70% completion percentage ranks 12th.

Mestemaker has thrown for at least 200 yards in all 11 of UNT’s games this season – including a ridiculous 608-yard, four-touchdown performance against Charlotte last month. He threw for 469 yards and three touchdowns against Rice this past weekend.

Chandler Morris (North Texas)

No relation to Eric, Chandler Morris led the UNT offense in 2024 – a season that looked to revitalize the quarterback’s college career.

Chandler had bounced around a bit, spending a season at OU before three at TCU. His best season in that time came in 2023 when Chandler threw for 1,532 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games with the Horned Frogs.

The next year at UNT, Chandler threw for 3,774 yards and 31 touchdowns for the Mean Green. That yardage total was good for fifth nationally, while his touchdowns tied for sixth in the country.

OSU appeared to be in the Chandler Morris sweepstakes at some point last offseason, but he ended up transferring to Virginia, where he’s thrown for 2,404 yards and 14 TDs for the Cavaliers.

John Mateer (Washington State)

Mateer is most famous in this state for being OU’s quarterback this season, but before that, he was another diamond-in-the-rough find for Morris.

Morris flipped Mateer from Central Arkansas to Washington State when the Cowboys’ next coach took the offensive coordinator position at Wazzu in 2022.

For a reason we’ll get to, Mateer threw just two passes in the season Morris was the Cougars’ OC. But in 2024, the former Central Arkansas commit threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns at Washington State, which made him a prime transfer portal candidate who OU quickly worked to scoop up.

Cam Ward (Incarnate Word/Washington State)

Before Cam Ward was the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, he was a no-star prospect who Morris recruited to FCS Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

Morris and Ward led the Cardinals to a Southland Conference title in 2021. Across 13 games that season, Ward threw for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns to just 10 INTs.

Morris then got took the offensive coordinator job at Washington State, and Ward went with him. In two seasons in Pullman, Ward threw for a combined 6,968 yards and 48 touchdowns to 16 interceptions.

Ward then transferred to Miami as Morris took the UNT head job. Ward was a Heisman finalist for the Hurricanes before the Tennessee Titans took him first overall in the NFL Draft.

Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech)

As good ole Jim Ross once said, business just picked up.

Morris was the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech, his alma mater, under Kliff Kingsbury from 2013 to 2017. The Red Raiders picked up a quarterback with three offers in the 2014 recruiting class. That quarterback has gone on to win three Super Bowls.

In just 32 games across three seasons as a Red Raider, Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns to 29 interceptions.

He led the nation in passing yards in 2016 — and did so by some margin. Mahomes’ 5,052 yards that year, one of just 18 5,000-yard seasons since 1956 (can’t imagine there were many before that). Mahomes finished 416 yards ahead of second-place Ryan Higgins (Louisiana Tech) that season. His 41 passing touchdowns tied for third that season with Higgins and Deshaun Watson.

“He gives you confidence to go out there and be yourself and play the game the way you’re supposed to play,” Mahomes said of Morris this month. “And he’ll change the offense for that. It’s not surprising to me that he’s had so much success.”
