Oklahoma Sooners (official thread)

MORNING BUZZ
ESPN+, OU reach multiyear SoonerVision deal
BY MICHAEL SMITH 5.5.2022
https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2022/05/05/Oklahoma.aspx
ESPN+ and Oklahoma have agreed to the most expansive media-rights deal for an individual athletic program on the streaming service. ESPN+ will carry more than 100 live Oklahoma events, including one football game each season, some men’s and women’s basketball, studio shows and archived content. ESPN+ for the first time will create a landing page that directs viewers to “SoonerVision on ESPN+.” SoonerVision is Oklahoma’s in-house production arm. The new multiyear agreement will launch in August, in time for the start of fall events, and will carry live OU home events that are not picked up by linear channels. This content previously ran as part of Sooner Sports TV on Bally Sports Oklahoma and Bally Sports Southwest.

Financial terms were not released, but Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione told SBJ that “it would be worth more than what we’ve had previously.” The Sooners will join the SEC, which has all of its media rights with ESPN, no later than '25. “This deal is about access and reach,” Castiglione added. “I’m just happy that we’re going to be able to continue to offer more than 1,000 hours annually of live content.”

BRENT VENABLES IS A COACHING UNICORN

There will be some differences in Venables’ head coaching style compared to his mentors. But he readily admits he’s a “unicorn” in the coaching profession because of who he’s been exposed to throughout the years.

Now at Oklahoma, where he’s built a staff with 17 former Sooner players, he hopes to combine the traits that made Snyder, Stoops and Swinney so successful while continuing his remarkable run of 30 years without a losing season.

During his conversation with 247Sports, Venables mentioned Miracle Grow a few times. His wife has him plant some plants during the offseason, and, on occasion, he’s ruined a few because he puts on too much Miracle Grow – too much too fast.

Having observed (and absorbed) the Hall of Fame coaches he’s worked for, Venables said he knows there are no shortcuts to success.

“One thing I know is you’ll grow what you plant,” Venables said. “I was fortunate enough there were a lot of intentional people helping me on my journey who threw all kinds of seeds of belief and positivity into me. There’s patience, nurturing, failure and opportunities to get all scared up. It’s good. Some people might not like it. They’d rather hang up at the top of the mountain all the time. But the real joy and the real success happens down here in the mud and the valleys."
