The Ohio High School Athletic Association today awarded the state championship football games to Columbus and Stark County on a rotating basis beginning in 2012, according to an OHSAA statement.

The OHSAA Board of Directors approved a recommendation by a football finals subcommittee that both Stark County and Columbus be given the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each beginning in 2012.

Stark County, which already is under contract to host the six championship games this year and next, was awarded the 2012 and 2013 championships, which will be played in Fawcett Stadium in Canton and Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon. Columbus was awarded the 2014 and 2015 championships, to be played in Ohio Stadium.

I know that the Massillon/Canton area has given the football championship games quite a bit of support over the years but I think it is time for them to be moved to Columbus because of the central location to other high schools in the state. I think they would get many more fans from the high schools actually playing in the games if the games were played in Columbus. Not to mention the fact if they were held in Columbus most of the teams would travel equal distances unlike now where teams from the southwestern area have to travel a great distance compared to the ones from Northeast and Central Ohio.

Not to mention the fact that there is a hell of a more to do in Columbus and the surrounding communities than in Massillon/Canton.

I agree with a lot of your points here little but Ohio Stadium is just too big of a stadium for the high school state titles games. It definitely takes away from the the atmosphere of the game which I think is the most important part.

Most football players in Ohio will be more excited about playing in the Shoe than playing in Fawcett Stadium.

A couple years ago when the Columbus Sports/Convention Bureau put out their bid for the high school championship games, they were not going to be played in Ohio Stadium but I believe they were going to be played in the Crew Stadium and at Dublin Coffman high school. I am not sure if Ohio Stadium was included in the bid this year or not. There are plenty of large high school fields in the Franklin County area and they are not as dilapidated as the ones in Stark County.
