Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State - 11/23/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

1000% agreed... we need to get down field more and IMO we need to call the plays to do it. We will not grind put 91 yard 5 minute TD drives in the playoffs so we need to trust Justin to go downfield.

I think once we got up, the staff just buttoned it up when the rain came down. I sort of get it, I think they just wanted to get the win and fight the fight another day. But we definitely cannot play that way in any of our remaining games, gotta let Justin rip it when we need to.

And rip it he can; that end zone, in-stride bomb off which he manipulated the safety was better than anything I’ve seen on Pornhub in the past 7 weeks.

You might ask why 7 weeks is such a specific timeframe; I’ll just say that’s an excellent question.

JAMES FRANKLIN ATTRIBUTES LOSS AGAINST OHIO STATE TO LACK OF EXPLOSIVE PLAYS, CROWD NOISE AND JUSTIN FIELDS' RUNNING ABILITY

109290_h.jpg

Penn State hung with the Buckeyes longer than anyone other team has this season, but it still wasn't quite enough as Ohio State hung on for a 28-17 win over the Nittany Lions.

In his postgame press conference, Penn State head coach James Franklin highlighted three aspects of the game that he said proved to be the difference – Justin Fields' running ability, Ohio State's ability to create explosive plays and limit them from Penn State, and crowd noise late in the game.

"The biggest difference in the game was the quarterback’s legs in the running game," Franklin said of Justin Fields' performance on the ground. "We were able to get them into third and long and he would take off for a run, some fourth-down conversions as well.”

Fields had two conversions on 3rd-and-long during Ohio State's first possession of the game on rushes of 15 and 17 yards, extending the drive before ultimately punching it in on the ground.

Late in the second quarter, Fields' legs hurt Penn State again on a 4th-and-5 as Fields broke a quarterback draw for 22 yards to give the Buckeyes a first down, setting up an eventual touchdown.

But it wasn't just Fields – four different Buckeye players had plays of 20 yards or greater. For Penn State, only KJ Hamler had a play of 20 or more yards.

“We weren’t able to be explosive enough," Franklin said "They had explosive plays, we did not.”

You Play To Win The Game: Ryan Day Beats James Franklin

James-Franklin-Penn-State.jpg

Some coaches play to win the game.

Some coaches play to not-lose the game.

Saturday in Ohio Stadium, 104,355 people got a great look at the difference between the two.

On the first drive of the day, Penn State took advantage of a big kick return by K.J. Hamler to move into Ohio State territory. Facing a 4th-and-4 at the OSU 42, Penn State coach James Franklin decided to punt.

He then watched his defense give up a 13-play, 91-yard touchdown drive to the Buckeyes. Two drives later, another OSU possession ended with a Justin Fields fumble inside the PSU 1.

At this point, with his defense getting gashed, Franklin had another choice to make. The Nittany Lions had the ball 4th-and-7 at the OSU 36.

Again, he sent out the punt team.

“I think it was 4th-and-7 and we hadn’t really moved the ball a whole lot,” said Franklin.

“The game at that point was still a close game. So if you can punt them deep and pin them inside the 10 yard line, we felt like that was the best opportunity at that point.

“Fourth-and-7, you look at these guys, you don’t want to be in 3rd-and-long against them, you don’t want to be in 4th-and-long against them. The game was still tight, punt them deep, play really good defense and hopefully swing field position.”

The problem, of course was that at that point, Penn State’s defense had shown little ability to get off the field against the Buckeyes.

Remember, OSU went 91 yards the first time PSU ‘punted them deep’. Then they came within a half-yard of punching in another touchdown before that Fields fumble. With that as a baseline, playing the field position game and leaning on the defense seems like nothing more than blind faith.

Game management issues have been a recurring theme with Franklin over the years. Penn State fans still bemoan the decision to hand the ball to a running back on a do-or-die 4th-and-5 against the Buckeyes in 2018.

Multiple times this season, he has kicked field goals in seemingly obvious “go” situations this year. One came back to bite him in the Lions’ loss to Minnesota.

Contrast that with Ohio State’s Ryan Day.

Facing 4th-and- 5 at the Penn State 26 late in the second quarter, Day passed up what would have been a 43-yard field goal try. Instead, they spread the field five-wide and then had Fields run a quarterback draw for an easy first down.

Four plays later, it was 4th-and-goal from the 1. The conventional wisdom would have been to kick the field goal and give the Buckeyes a two-score lead.

Again, Day showed that while kicking may be conventional, it definitely isn’t the wise choice there.

Ohio State Postgame — Ryan Day Updates Following 28-17 Win Over Penn State

Ryan-Day-Miami-Postgame-1170x780.jpg

+ “There was a point in the game there where we were taking shots.” So he brought the entire team together and talked to them about not being afraid to take punches. The Buckeyes responded after they stopped giving the ball away. “We were reeling right there and we had to respond, and we did.”

+ This was about what he expected from beginning to end. Penn State battled. Proud of the way the Buckeyes fought and overcame.

+ The decision to throw the ball at the end on fourth down? Running the ball there doesn’t eat the clock. Justin Fields tried to make a play, but took a hit.

+ Got a bunch of false starts due to the fans and that was a factor for the Ohio State defense.

+ Going for the fourth downs in the first half, Day felt like they were rolling pretty well and those are the times to be aggressive. With this offense, they should pick those up.

+ Not gonna sit around and think about winning the Big Ten East too much, but it’s a tribute to the seniors.

+ “How about Justin Hilliard? He had the play of the game with that interception.”

+ Justin Fields is fine. “He’s a warrior, I’m telling you right now.” Fields knew he was going to be leaned on. “Whatever it takes, Coach.”

+ The adversity today will absolutely help this team down the road. It shows you that if they take care of the ball, who knows what this game could have looked like. “This is something that we have to learn from. That could have cost us the whole season.”

+ When you blow everybody out, you still know your team, but you don’t know how they’ll react when the season is on the line. He knows today how this team will react in those situations. “If you just keep swinging.”

+ “I just think Chase Young deserves to be in New York.” The impact he has on the game is unbelievable.

+ Michigan game? “We live it every day.” They will enjoy this one, but quickly they will transition to Michigan.

+ He tries not to second guess when he makes a call like going for it on fourth down.

+ Hadn’t really shown the QB draw in the empty set like they were today.

+ They ran the ball to eat up clock and get first downs. Things were getting hectic and there was a rhythm. The defense was playing well for the Buckeyes, so he didn’t want to get too risky.

+ Penn State has a very good run defense, so you have to run the quarterback to equate the numbers. For the most part, Fields was reading somebody and his read was to pull the ball.

+ KJ Hill and Chris Olave had huge plays for touchdowns. Justin Fields threw two good balls. Those were clutch throws and nice catches.

+ It’s hard to put into words what the fifth-year seniors have provided to this team. Look at Justin Hilliard and Jashon Cornell today. Unbelievable plays by both of those guys to stop drives.

+ You don’t have to worry about the fifth-year seniors. They are mature. “I love having those guys around.”

+ Will Levis is a stronger runner, but the PSU offense started feeing off of the mistakes by Ohio State.

+ Can’t give enough credit to the defensive staff. “The scheme is off the charts.”

+ What does a close game mean for the future. “I think you have their (the players’) attention now.”
