Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State - 11/23/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

Yet another game that will be won in the trenches. Rumor has it that PSU OL is not as solid as it has been in the past. If our front seven on D can control the LOS it is going to be a long day for the blue and white. Stop the run and we should be on our way to the BIG Ten Championship.
Have you forgotten about Michigan or are you that confident that we will handle them with no problem

I'm guessing we won't actually know Hamlers status until right before the game, its ugly if he sits though. They only have 1 other WR with over 10 catches on the season. TE is the 2nd leading receiver.

How Chase Young, K.J. Hill, J.K. Dobbins Could Make History

JK-Dobbins-Penn-State-2018.jpg

Ohio State vs. Penn State might not be a rivalry, but it’s certainly one of the Buckeyes’ more competitive and interesting series.

The last three games between the Bucks and Nittany Lions have been decided by a total of just five points. Penn State won by a field goal in 2016 and the Buckeyes won each of the last two meetings by a single point.

Saturday, the teams will face off again, this time in Ohio Stadium on Senior Day.

The stakes are huge. The winner will represent the Big Ten East in the conference title game (assuming Penn State beats Rutgers, so… yeah), and will retain an inside track to the College Football Playoff.

The Buckeyes have won 18 of the 26 meetings between the schools since Penn State joined the Big Ten, and are 13-4 against the Nittany Lions since 2002.

Here are 10 interesting stats and notes to know for this weekend’s game, including Chase Young, K.J. Hill, and J.K. Dobbins potentially making Ohio State history.

1
Sacks needed for OSU junior defensive end Chase Young to break the school’s single-season sack record. Young currently has 13.5 sacks, just a half-sack behind Vernon Gholston’s mark of 14, set in 2007. That stat has gotten enough attention that you’ve probably seen it already.

However, the next time Young records a sack, he’ll also move into second place all-time on the Buckeyes’ career sack record. Young enters this weekend with 27.5 career sacks, tied with Jason Simmons for second on that list.

Mike Vrabel is the all-time career leader at the school with 36.

6
Justin Fields has six games with at least 200 yards passing this season.

That’s as many as J.T. Barrett did in all of 2017, and tied for the sixth-most of any OSU quarterback all-time.

That’s remarkable, given that Fields has barely played half of most games this year, and has also finished games with 199 (Indiana) and 194 (Northwestern) yards.

If he puts up 200-yard games in each of the Buckeyes’ potential five remaining games, he would tie Joe Germaine’s 1998 and Bobby Hoying’s 1995 for the second-most ever.

6-3
The Buckeyes have put together a nice record against Penn State when both teams are ranked in the top-10 nationally. OSU has won 6 of 9 such meetings.

10
Senior WR K.J. Hill needs 10 receptions to pass David Boston to become the school’s all-time leader in career catches.

That would require quite a big day, but Hill has done it before. He set his career-high for receptions in a single game against the Nittany Lions with 12 in 2017.

Hill enters this weekend with 182 catches in his career, while Boston finished with 191.

11
A win Saturday would give Ohio State 11 on the season. That would be the 13th time in the last 18 years that the Buckeyes have won at least 11 games.

Michigan has won 11+ games in nine seasons all-time, and only five times since 1905.

14-3
The Buckeyes are 14-3 in their last 17 games against teams ranked in the Associated Press top-10.

They have won six straight games against AP top-10 opponents

PRESSER BULLETS: RYAN DAY, JEFF HAFLEY, JUSTIN FIELDS, BRANDEN BOWEN AND ROBERT LANDERS PREVIEW THIS WEEK'S GAME AGAINST PENN STATE

109104_h.jpg

Ryan Day:
  • Day said he is "certainly optimistic" that Ohio State will get some of its injured players such as Jonathon Cooper, Austin Mack and Baron Browning back on the field this week. Day said they might have been "overly cautious" last week holding some players out of action.
  • On playing Penn State and Michigan back-to-back to end the season: "We don't make the schedule ... We're worried about the things we can control."
  • Day described Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford as "competitive, tough, well-prepared and a good leader." He said he is impressed by Clifford's escapability and pocket awareness.
  • On Justin Fields: "I think every week he gets a little better in each area."
  • Day said Saturday will be emotional because it's the last game in Ohio Stadium for the Buckeyes' seniors, but they will try to stay focused on the task at hand.
  • On having so many seniors this year, including more than a dozen fifth-year seniors on scholarship: "I think the maturity level is off-the-charts."
  • On K.J. Hill: "He understands space, he knows how to get open ... the production that he's had is off-the-charts. He's not 4.3, he's not 6-5, but he just has a way. I think Bill Belichick says, the best thing about a receiver is he gets open and he catches the ball, and that's what he does."
  • Day said that while Hill doesn't always get the external spotlight, he gets the spotlight inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center because he is a team captain.
  • Day said Justin Fields has to be ready to put the team on his back and win the game in the fourth quarter on Saturday, just like J.T. Barrett did in 2017 and Dwayne Haskins did in 2018.
  • Day said Ohio State passing the ball more over the past couple weeks wasn't calculated specifically to prepare for Penn State, but was something the Buckeyes worked on during the bye week because they knew they might need to do it more down the stretch of the season.
  • Day said there won't be any limits placed on Chase Young in his return to the field on Saturday.
  • "This is a talent-equated game ... The team that's more prepared will win the game."
  • Day said James Franklin is an "excellent coach" who will have his team prepared in all three phases.
  • On Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson: "I think Dotson's as good of a wide receiver as there is in the Big Ten."
  • On Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons: "Micah Parsons is as talented as there is in the conference."
  • Day said he has talked to the Buckeyes about getting out to a fast start so they don't end up in the same position they were in the past two years when they had to come back in the fourth quarter. He said the Buckeyes didn't execute as well as they needed to early in those games.
  • "You just have to have understand how important every play is in a game" in a game like this where one play could change the game. "I can't really say that we've been in a game where that would have been the case this year."
  • Day's message to Ohio State fans: "We need everybody in the seats. We need everyone to be really loud ... Every time Penn State has the ball, we need them to be as loud as they possibly can ... If our crowd's loud, it makes it very hard for them to communicate."
  • On J.K. Dobbins' comment that Saturday doesn't have to be a four-quarter game, Day said he appreciates that confidence but believes Dobbins knows what the Buckeyes are getting into this week and is excited to play for four quarters.
  • On Saturday's game: "For so many reasons, this is the biggest one of the year."
  • Day said Harry Miller has done an "unbelievable job" getting himself ready to play as needed at center "which for a freshman, is unheard of." He said he would prefer for players who are going to be centers in the future develop at center, and that it's easier to move a center to guard than the other way around.
  • On Garrett Wilson's muffed punt: "We have confidence in Garrett. He's a young player who made a mistake, and he'll work on it in practice."
  • Day said he didn't realize the gravity of what just happened in last year's fourth-quarter comeback against Penn State until the game was over because of how he focused he was on just doing his job and calling plays.
  • Although it's a big recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes, Day said "it's very difficult to spend a lot of time with those guys" this week because it's such a high-stakes game, and he thinks the recruits understand that. They're coming to this week's game because they want to experience the atmosphere of a big game, not because they want a lot of one-on-one time with the coaches.

Definitely good news!!!

Re: Hafley said Chase Young was "great" during his suspension. "He came to work every day ... he hasn't changed who he is at all." Hafley said he believes Young will be better in the long run for going through that experience.

That sounds like complete unadulterated "bull shit".....

Wait, so you are abandoning your son to go into surgery without you so that you can help the buckeyes win???

My God man, I LOVE you.
Ha. Surgery was 11/22...got pushed to 1/10. Just a minor thing that he's lived 4 years with, but he's got a cold so they don't want coughing to mess with stitches. Plus, what 4 year old wants to deal with a cold and surgery recovery.

I'm guessing we won't actually know Hamlers status until right before the game, its ugly if he sits though. They only have 1 other WR with over 10 catches on the season. TE is the 2nd leading receiver.

Penn State’s passing game goes through KJ Hamler, and James Franklin offers an update on his outlook for Ohio State

Hamler, who leads the No. 9 Nittany Lions in receptions (46), yards (791) and touchdown receptions (8), suffered an apparent head injury while returning a first-quarter kickoff against the Hoosiers. The redshirt sophomore wideout made a trip to the injury tent and did not play again. He was not on the sideline during the second half.

“Like I said last week after the game, we're hopeful,’’ Penn State coach James Franklin said Tuesday when asked about Hamler’s status for the matchup with the unbeaten Buckeyes (10-0).

“Obviously, we won’t know. There’s medical policies and procedures that we go through. We have to go through a series of steps and things like that. But we were hopeful after the game. I still remain hopeful. Those decisions, I don’t make. I won’t make them now and I never have since I’ve been at Penn State.’’

Hamler is also a dangerous return man for Penn State (9-1) and he torched the Buckeyes’ secondary for a 93-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the Lions’ 27-26 loss to Ohio State last season at Beaver Stadium. He finished with four catches for 138 yards and a touchdown in the game.

“We'll wait and see, but we were hopeful after the game,’’ Franklin said.

“I still remain hopeful (about Hamler). Again, the medical professionals will make those decisions.”

HAMLER’S STATUS: Not that Penn State would tip its hand about Hamler’s availability, but it’s worth noting that he is back atop the depth chart after missing much of the Indiana win with an undisclosed injury. Coach James Franklin did express optimism that Hamler could suit up for the showdown in Columbus, but his status might not be known until just prior to kickoff on Saturday.

I'm no doctor; but it sounds to me like he suffered a concussion.
