How Chase Young, K.J. Hill, J.K. Dobbins Could Make History
Ohio State vs. Penn State might not be a rivalry, but it’s certainly one of the Buckeyes’ more competitive and interesting series.
The last three games between the Bucks and Nittany Lions have been decided by a total of just five points. Penn State won by a field goal in 2016 and the Buckeyes won each of the last two meetings by a single point.
Saturday, the teams will face off again, this time in Ohio Stadium on Senior Day.
The stakes are huge. The winner will represent the Big Ten East in the conference title game (assuming Penn State beats Rutgers, so… yeah), and will retain an inside track to the College Football Playoff.
The Buckeyes have won 18 of the 26 meetings between the schools since Penn State joined the Big Ten, and are 13-4 against the Nittany Lions since 2002.
Here are 10 interesting stats and notes to know for this weekend’s game, including Chase Young, K.J. Hill, and J.K. Dobbins potentially making Ohio State history.
1
Sacks needed for OSU junior defensive end Chase Young to break the school’s single-season sack record. Young currently has 13.5 sacks, just a half-sack behind Vernon Gholston’s mark of 14, set in 2007. That stat has gotten enough attention that you’ve probably seen it already.
However, the next time Young records a sack, he’ll also move into second place all-time on the Buckeyes’ career sack record. Young enters this weekend with 27.5 career sacks, tied with Jason Simmons for second on that list.
Mike Vrabel is the all-time career leader at the school with 36.
6
Justin Fields has six games with at least 200 yards passing this season.
That’s as many as J.T. Barrett did in all of 2017, and tied for the sixth-most of any OSU quarterback all-time.
That’s remarkable, given that Fields has barely played half of most games this year, and has also finished games with 199 (Indiana) and 194 (Northwestern) yards.
If he puts up 200-yard games in each of the Buckeyes’ potential five remaining games, he would tie Joe Germaine’s 1998 and Bobby Hoying’s 1995 for the second-most ever.
6-3
The Buckeyes have put together a nice record against Penn State when both teams are ranked in the top-10 nationally. OSU has won 6 of 9 such meetings.
10
Senior WR K.J. Hill needs 10 receptions to pass David Boston to become the school’s all-time leader in career catches.
That would require quite a big day, but Hill has done it before. He set his career-high for receptions in a single game against the Nittany Lions with 12 in 2017.
Hill enters this weekend with 182 catches in his career, while Boston finished with 191.
11
A win Saturday would give Ohio State 11 on the season. That would be the 13th time in the last 18 years that the Buckeyes have won at least 11 games.
Michigan has won 11+ games in nine seasons all-time, and only five times since 1905.
14-3
The Buckeyes are 14-3 in their last 17 games against teams ranked in the Associated Press top-10.
They have won six straight games against AP top-10 opponents
