Ohio State vs Michigan State 1/6/08 ESPN

Agreed. But neither P.J. nor Jeremie are particularly good ballhandlers and neither can shoot well. That's the biggest dropoff and will plague us all season IMO.

That's the risk you run when you recruit so many kids with pro potential. They play one year and bolt before they can really gel as a team. My biggest beef with CBB and why I have a hard time following with the same passion I do with CFB. You don't develop the attachment you do with kids that play here 3-4 years.

Totally agree.

I'm trying to be optimistic about the PG position but I share your concerns.

Understandable. Been a rough couple nights in Buckeyeland.

I'm just praying that B.J., Evan and Buford don't bail after this year. The 2010 class looks like another monster haul and we'll need a bridge to them or next season could be really rough.

We're allowing about 10 ppg more without Lighty. That's where he's missed the most because you can play defense every night, even if the shots aren't falling. We're not going to win many shootouts. We need to hold opponents under 60 on most nights.

We're young and thin right now, and we're searching for a leader on the point. All we can do is keep playing and work toward improvement because there's no help on the way any time soon.

Two winnable home games coming up. Let's get 2 wins and try to build some confidence.

Yep. I look for a similar season to last...lot of lumps in the middle of the schedule, then they'll start to gel late. Hopefully not too many lumps.

Gonna throw some optimism on this game...Yeah we lost, yeah we started 9-0 and have went 1-3 in the past 4 and really havent looked that great, yeah it sucks we lost our captain, and lost another contributor...But things can only go up from here...And here is why...

First let me start by saying we lost at Minny and at MSU...Both very hard places to play and very good teams...Especially after what we learned in the first 9 games went by the wayside as we lost 2 of our top 8 players...

Mullens looked great at times tonight...He still has lots to work on, but tonight he seemed to try and impose his will...He grabbed rebounds with authority, he dunked the ball with authority...Still needs to work on positioning, and it hurts at times when he has to run out on a shooter and leaves the inside for rebounding, but would be the same in man as he would have to go out and guard guys on pick and rolls/pops...

Buford looked great tonight...We are going to need his scoring to really compete, but we need to find ways to get him easier looks, or get him more involved...Make him part of the flow of the offense more, much like we have done with Diebler...Have the threat of either of them instead of just one running off screens...

Simmons can only go up...He is really struggling with his shot right now, but he has the ability to score...Hopefully he finds his shot and starts to try and create a little more...

Turner...He is creating for himself right now, but forgetting about his teammates...Only 2 assists tonight...He was putting up 4-5 earlier in the season to kinda mask his turnovers...Remember the Miami game when he really did a great job when he couldn't get to the rim and would draw doubles he would pass and get someone an open look...He should have Diebler and Buford open for looks, or an oop to Mullens or something if he draws defenders...

Diebler struggled some tonight, but he has been consistent...

These 5 guys are going to have to carry the offense...We need to find ways to get easy buckets...offensive rebounds, open jumpers, and make the game easier...We are hurting ourselves some trying to run the clock down as we don't really have a guy you can just give the ball to and he can create a good look...

I will say the talent is there, and @ MSU, Minny are two of the toughest games we had on our schedule...

Houston Babtist is a nice pick me up on Friday I would think...Then Indiana at home...

Lucas lifts No. 8 Michigan State over Ohio State

By Larry Lage
Associated Press

Tuesday, January 06, 2009

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? Michigan State made five 3-pointers in less than 3 minutes, making up for what was otherwise a lackluster performance.
Kalin Lucas scored six of his 20 points on 3-pointers during the first-half barrage that gave the eighth-ranked Spartans the lead for a good in a 67-58 win over Ohio State on Tuesday night.
"We were up and we let our guard down," Buckeyes forward Evan Turner said. "They got shots all over the perimeter and the momentum changed."
Michigan State has won eight straight since being routed by North Carolina and 26 in a row at home, dating to a loss against Ohio State nearly two years ago, but coach Tom Izzo was underwhelmed by the latest victory.
"We looked tired and we played tired," Izzo said. "We're going to have our first day off tomorrow in a couple of weeks and that will be good for all of us."
Then, Michigan State (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) will start preparing for a visit from the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday.
"If we're not ready to run in that game, we're going to get run out of the gym because they're very athletic," Izzo said. "We have to get freshened up."

Why did we not see more of Dallas tonight? Was he hurt or is he just playing badly? Early in the season he was by far the most consistent player for this team. He's now the older statesman on the floor for us just about and we need the experienced guys to start taking control of the team or a freshman to step up and make the team his. Lots of room for improvement but still lots of time to do it. This season has still been a success so far in my eyes so I'm not the least bit pessimistic about the final outcome. Thad Matta has never had less than a 20 win season and I dont see this one being that either. 20 should get us in the tourney with the quality wins we've already achieved. As long as the guys stay positive and play hard, I'll be satisfied.

he played 18 mins, hes been playing 20-25, not that far off his normal, msu pushes the ball and lets be frank dallas doesnt run the floor real well.

older statesman? hes a green sophmore. he may have been the most consistent in production but trust me he was not consistent, he was getting away with things. those early preseason games those teams dont scout you. huggins spent extra time for one reason, to send a message. in b10 play they know which shoe you put on first and which hand you wipe with, blonde or brunette and whether or not youve ever even checked out a fat chick. that is even more exaggerated and in depth scouting wise with the new 18 game schedule i might.

or down. but certainly things to be happy with.

First let me start by saying we lost at Minny and at MSU...Both very hard places to play and very good teams...Especially after what we learned in the first 9 games went by the wayside as we lost 2 of our top 8 players...

i had them both as losses anyway... and of one of the top 8 was our only meat and potatoes player.

Mullens looked great at times tonight...He still has lots to work on, but tonight he seemed to try and impose his will...He grabbed rebounds with authority, he dunked the ball with authority...Still needs to work on positioning, and it hurts at times when he has to run out on a shooter and leaves the inside for rebounding, but would be the same in man as he would have to go out and guard guys on pick and rolls/pops...

hes improved, i think hell continue to improve. i also saw a chest pass entry to mullens, wtf... he needs to continue to be willing to toss the ball back out and repost. his positioning is better and i expect to continue to improve. he has begun to tighten his game up, he has started to try and go by people not through them or around them.

will continue to improve, we may or may not see the full fruits of it but mountains are made of pebbles.

Buford looked great tonight...We are going to need his scoring to really compete, but we need to find ways to get him easier looks, or get him more involved...Make him part of the flow of the offense more, much like we have done with Diebler...Have the threat of either of them instead of just one running off screens...

will still needs to get back on d, ramp up his intensity on that end of the floor and play at a more consistent effort level. this kid oooozzzess. mullens and bufford make me drool and salivate. now getting bufford to do all the little things, ill tell you right now he could/should be an awesome defender, awesome, hes got length and should be a better rebounder. some of it is the things above some is he just needs time with some iron...

Simmons can only go up...He is really struggling with his shot right now, but he has the ability to score...Hopefully he finds his shot and starts to try and create a little more...

i said it early he stuggles handling the ball with pressure, get used to it youll see it all year, token + pressure all year.

Turner...He is creating for himself right now, but forgetting about his teammates...Only 2 assists tonight...He was putting up 4-5 earlier in the season to kinda mask his turnovers...Remember the Miami game when he really did a great job when he couldn't get to the rim and would draw doubles he would pass and get someone an open look...He should have Diebler and Buford open for looks, or an oop to Mullens or something if he draws defenders...

needs to begin to evlove with the loss of lighty. needs to increase emphasis on rebounding and defense. i agree, though currently we only have 4 offense options-mullens, diebler, bufford and turner-in no order.

Diebler struggled some tonight, but he has been consistent...

you arent going to get a "shooter" to go 4/10 on 3s and 9/15 from the floor everynight. he needs to continue to try and get easy baskets, rebound, defend, pass the ball etc.

These 5 guys are going to have to carry the offense...We need to find ways to get easy buckets...offensive rebounds, open jumpers, and make the game easier...We are hurting ourselves some trying to run the clock down as we don't really have a guy you can just give the ball to and he can create a good look...

five, id say 4. of those guys can score. i agree on easy buckets, that was lightys mo. transition, rebounding create easy buckets. we have a timidness at times, i think that has to do with using so much clock, we dont do much. granted then when we do its bury your head pound the ball on the floor and see what happens. not a good thing.

I will say the talent is there, and @ MSU, Minny are two of the toughest games we had on our schedule...

agreed but no excuses. granted i had both those games chalked as Ls. also both teams but the hurt on us before halftime. both teams but big runs, long and big point diffs after the under 8s.

Houston Babtist is a nice pick me up on Friday I would think...Then Indiana at home...

leader, we are looking for a point guard. simmons is a combo. pj well is pj, he tries and plays hard but does not have big ten caliber athletic ability/size.

Two winnable home games coming up. Let's get 2 wins and try to build some confidence.

i think you werent the one i wanted to quote but i wanted to say that at point we saw early we couldnt handle the ball well there. thats hwy youve seen so much pj. irony isnt it that crater leaves over pt and those would have been his minutes... pj got 20 last night 15 or more of those would have been craters.

diebler and turner both got 40- mins.

complaing about guys leaving early is comical. especially the critcism obie got for not getting top flight talent but only taking program guys... its a double edged sword careful how you weild it. program players who cant compete for b10 titles but can muddle around the middle of the b10 or higher talent that can win you what 2 of the last 4 b10 titles plus a tourney title and muddle through with 20 wins the other years. intersting...

I have noticed that neither one looks to penetrate and that shuts down a lot of passes and assists.
I'm not so sure how much "better" our PG position will get this season because we really don't have a true PG. As mentioned above, Simmons is a combo guard and is probably better known for his shooting than his penetration and delivering the ball. Hill really has problems on offense when it comes to penetrating because he really hasn't shown the opposition that he can shoot from the outside. I love has hustle on defense but he is almost a liability on offense because other teams can just back off of him.

I agree Mook, but how much we can improve without a true point guard is anyone's guess.
We need the big men to get truly open more and then get them the ball. Then we need the big guys to recognize a dbl team and pass it back out.
I know the team needs a lot of work but we have a lot of talent too.
